well they declared my job, since I am a state employee, an essential job, so I get to go into work instead of telecommuting so I'm not part of the Stay At Home order. Now I get to answer the phone one day a week and spend the other 4 trying to find makework to do. Numbers really doubled just yesterday, which shouldn't cause too big a panic since it just means that the incubation period is over and they are finally showing signs. A couple of weeks, maybe, and the numbers should flatten and then fall. We hope. Everyone stay safe and avoid the folks who are the ones this can be fatal to have - 65+ years of age, heart or lung conditions, diabetes, weak immune system.

BTW, everyone knows about Digital Comic Museum? They have tons of comics that are in public domain.

Here's the link - https://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php

Not just American comics but others as well though not well represented. They are now starting to edge into the 1960s.

from one of my other groups. I didn't write this.

Back in July 2018, I posted a Girl From U.N.C.L.E. EPUB Collection that I'd put together from EPUBs found on Library Genesis.

For some reason, I never got around to posting the Man From U.N.C.L.E. EPUB Collection, so here it is:
The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Collection {EPUB & PDF} (35.66 MB)
http://www.mediafire.com/file/knid0zncihz1jam/TMFU.zip/file

The Usual Disclaimer: These EPUBs are not my work, so I can't vouch for the proofreading. If there should be errors in spelling, punctuation, or any other anomalies, I apologize, but please do not blame me!

These are EPUB files (and 2 PDFs) contained in a folder within a .zip file. After downloading the .zip file, simply unzip it and extract the folder containing the files.

The folder contains EPUB versions of the lead novellas from all twenty-four issues of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Magazine (note that the EPUBs have only the MFU novellas, not the entire magazines), the twenty-three published paperback novels, the unpublished novel The Final Affair (in EPUB & PDF), the two Whitman juvenile novels by Brandon Keith, and the fan-produced PDF reference about the TV series The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Bible.

Enjoy!

Your comments and feedback are always welcome.

Yep, and as I am from the state with the most common cause of death is the Dropped Letter "G", I worry.

Something I found on Pininterest.  Pretty small pic though so not sure how well it will show up.  Superheroes of the 1930s and when they first appeared.

List of superhero debuts
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The following is a list of the first known appearances of various superhero fictional characters and teams.

A superhero (also known as a "super hero" or "super-hero") is a fictional character "of unprecedented physical prowess dedicated to acts of derring-do in the public interest."[1] Since the debut of Superman in 1938 by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, stories of superheroes — ranging from brief episodic adventures to continuing years-long sagas — have dominated American comic books and crossed over into other media. A female superhero is sometimes called a "superheroine."

By most definitions, characters need not have actual superhuman powers to be deemed superheroes, although sometimes terms such as "costumed crimefighters"[2] are used to refer to those without such powers who have many other common traits of superheroes.

For a list of comic book supervillain debuts, see List of comic book supervillain debuts. wikipedia

Just found an interesting YouTube channel called The History Guy. 10-15 minute long snippets of history of all sorts.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fmqy2dsCJcs

This one deals with the kidnapping attempt of Princess Anne, something I had never heard of before.

I'm still digging around his site. There's one on the history of the potato and another on the history of the fork as well as the history of Time Zones. You got 10-15 minutes to kill, ya might want to go give him a look.

Ran across a newish superhero RPG called the Sentinels. It was a Kickstarter about 3 years back. Apparently, it is based off a Superhero Card Game. Pretty cheap to get too.

Don't think it will fit our current gaming rules but there might be an idea or two for mechanics that we could use.

Cheers! I think I bought the Sentinels game on Steam but never really gave it a decent try.

I was playing Talisman (the Games Workshop fantasy adventure board game) the other day and couldn't help but think a Superhero version would be good fun. It would be an ideal fit to the 60s/70s art style of Marvel, more cartoony than DC.

Anyway, let's see what I can get updated. Working tomorrow Sad

Connecting to the site...

Had problems connecting to this site today on Chrome so I connected via Firefox and we're still up and running thankfully! Something about a certificate expiring I think. Hopefully they'll sort it out.

Hi, we are getting ready to start a 1950s adventure, Aug 1953 to be exact.  We are going to be in a fictional city called Ruby City in California, somewhere on the coast
between LA and San Diego.

This is a basic entry level hero adventure.  450 points plus 50 points for writing up your background plus any disads you take.  We are using Blood of Heroes 2nd Edition also called Blood of Heroes Special edition.  This is the expanded rules that go beyond DC Super Heroes RPG 3rd edition.  You can easily find a free PDF of the game to download off a number of gaming sites.  That's how I got the rules.

Try this search:   blood of heroes Special edition RPG pdf

Come up with a character concept and flesh it out.  Get our GM, Paul, to approve it and you are ready to play.

Keep your attack and defense powers between 6 and 9.

This isn't the DC universe by the way.  Though superheroes have existed.  It's our own universe.

We are playing in 1953 as it is part of that dead time period between the golden age of heroes, who started appearing in late 1938 and mostly disappeared before 1953, and the silver age, which started in late 1956, where tons of new heroes once again started appearing.  The Korean War, for reference, just ended in July, 1953.  We are part of the handful of heroes who have appeared during this "dead" time.

Currently, we have two heroes ready to go.  Lightning Bullet, my character, who will provide our base and Captain Conduit, who uses lightning and flies.

This is the Age of the Red Scare!  Atomic War is moments away. Schlocky Sci-Fi movies.  Commies are everywhere!  Eisenhower is President.  Rock and Roll is just beginning and parents are horrified though it hasn't really taken off yet. Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley and the Comets doesn't come out until 1955.  The Space Race hasn't really started yet.  Two of America's biggest spies, who were giving our secrets of atomic bombs to the Commies, were just executed.

Check out these OOC Chat forums for ideas in getting into the 1950s swing:

LIGHTNING BULLET ISSUE ZERO!
1950s California
Lightning Bullet, a new hero
COMMIE VILLAINS
World War 2 and into the Cold War

I've added my character sheet here and a couple of pics so you can get an idea of characters and backgrounds.  The last paragraph of Lightning Bullet's description may help you in coming up with an origin, if you want to use it.  It would make it easier story-wise as to why you join the team.  But your choice.

Also, Paul our GM is in England so he is 4-6 hours ahead of us timewise, so his posting times will be different from ours.

I think you should also be able to start up a NEWTPOIC in the OOC forums, click the button and give it a title for your character. So why don't you stick your character idea in its own forum, like I did for Lightning Bullet, that way it doesn't get lost in the clutter while you develop it.

Hiya, welcome to the game! Not sure if you are familiar with the DC heroes RPG but it's not a huge issue if you aren't. We'll be starting up a new campaign set in the 1950s with low power/street level heroes.

Basically if you want to come up with an idea about a character - super powered? Skilled? Equipment based? Have a think and I'm sure David can help with ideas too. if you aren't familiar with the game...

The House Rules I run make the game easier/faster to resolve. We roll 2D12, doubles explode, 3 or less is an auto fail. Add the relevant ACTION attribute or power for an Acting Value total. The opposing character/situation rolls 2D12 plus the Opposing Attribute. Compare Acting value total vs Opposing Value total. This gives a bonus to Effect value (like Strength, or damage of weapon), so the more accurate you are, the more damage you cause. This is compared to the Resistance value (like toughness, or armour, or willpower or whatever) to see the Result.

Don't worry about the mechanics. I sort all that out. I will also guide you with regards options and always weigh in any doubt on the side of the player.

As David mentioned I am on GMT so somewhat ahead of you guys time wise hence a certain delay. Plus I've had a rough week at work and on catch up so I may be absent for a day or so but never usually longer (unless on holiday etc).

Any questions, fire away!

Cheers, Paul

Archaeologists Unearth Thousands of Medieval Coins in a Farmer’s Field in Hungary
By EMG Inspired Staff
June 25, 2021 Updated: June 25, 2021
biggersmaller Print

A hoard of medieval coins was recently discovered in Hungary during archaeological excavations in a field near Újlengyel village.

The excavation, impelled by digs in 2019 where 150 medieval coins were discovered at the location, yielded yet more treasure.

Using metal detectors, the archaeologists were fortunate to discover four gold coins and no less than 7,000 silver ones.

The coins were discovered on a farm near Újlengyel village, in Pest County, and were stacked in a vessel buried about 3.28 feet underground. It appeared as though the vessel had already been broken open—probably by the farmer’s plow.

However, the farmer hadn’t been so lucky as to see them, and the valuables remained hidden under the earth until recently.

The excavations, which took two days to complete, were sponsored by the Ferenczy Museum Center and led by coin expert Balázs Nagy, resident numismatist at the museum. The museum later posted the find on their Facebook page.

The total value of the find, when its owner was still alive, according to the archaeologists, would have been the equivalent to the value of a luxury car today; in those days, the coins would have been enough to purchase seven horses, according to the museum’s post.

So far, the find marks the largest collection of such coins to have been extracted in Pest County since excavations began.

The archaeologists believe the coins may have been buried by people fleeing invading troops from the Ottoman Empire, under ruler Suleiman the Magnificent, during his forceful incursion into Hungary in 1521.
Epoch Times Photo
(Courtesy of Ferenczy Museum Center)

The coins are very rare today and also quite valuable.

Among the several coins discovered, the oldest is a silver denarius bearing the image of Roman Emperor Lucius Verus from the second century.

The newest of the coins dates back to King Louis II, who ruled Hungary from 1516–1527—leading the archaeologists to surmise that the coins might have been stashed there during, or perhaps shortly after, the said king’s reign.
Epoch Times Photo

Of all the coins in the hoard, the most valuable was deemed to be the Vatican-issued denarius, which dates back to the reign of Pope Pius from 1458–1564, and is considered both extremely rare and valuable today.

The treasure hunters from the Ferenczy Museum Centre were lucky that the farmer’s plow did not push the vessel further underground, as often happens with farm machinery.

They are optimistic that more discoveries will be unearthed as their digging continues.
