Carter and Holmes surveyed the scene.
"Idyllic village life. A farming community, Mr Carter, with little to worry about save the endless struggle against Mother Nature..." said Holmes, looking at the village from a hill top. The scene was peaceful, lovely and a world away from the chaos that Advent, Moriarty, Fu Manchu and others were trying to inflict upon it!
"Let's find ourselves wagons and horses sir, as well as fresh food and supplies, eh?" smiled the Detective, but Haunt saw he never had a hand far away from the inside of his coat pocket where he suspected the man's revolver was...
OOC The village is a dozen houses and one main street with a shop that acts as everything from post office to grocery store to village pub. Carter and Holmes can see people going about their business, kids playing in the street with dogs and a ball, and beyond that farmers working in fields at ploughs.
"Let's "dismount" out of sight and walk the rest of the way in," Nick suggested. "Don't want folks wondering where two horses disappeared to that we rode in on."
Finding a hedge row to hide behind, they did just that then walked back to the road and down to the village.
ooc: In some ways it is hard to believe that automobiles are that old, other ways, not so much.
"We don't have wagons where I come from," he said to Holmes. "The automobile made last decade developed so much that horse drawn wagons are a thing of the past. So I will have to rely on your knowledge as to where to go to buy one."
The First Mass Produced Car
The first practical cars featured gasoline/petrol-powered internal-combustion engines. These cars were built by numerous German inventors, with Karl Benz’s invention being considered as the first practical car in the world. Benz replaced the horse of a horse-carriage with an engine that was able to run on fuel. The vehicle had three tires and had a front wheel that was smaller and lighter than the rear wheels in order to ensure that the car performed well in hilly terrain. Benz's engine weighed about 220 pounds, was capable of generating about 0.75 horsepower, and was the most efficient engine at that time. His first car was built in Mannheim, Germany in 1885, and subsequently patented on January 29, 1886. Mass production of Benz's car began in 1888 after a successful trip with his family from Mannheim to Pforzheim in August of that year.

I always thought cars came around 1900 just a few years before the airplane. To think it was the 1880s. Actually a lot of modern stuff came out in the 1880s. Surprising number:
https://www.timetoast.com/timelines/inventions-of-the-1880-s-to-1900-s
Thomas Edison inventions shortlist list
1. Incandescent light bulb
Edison emphasized working on developing a cost-effective electric bulb in 1878. Other had made light bulb prior to that but they were shortlived and costly.
2. PhonographEdison was working on improved telegraphic devices, and in the meantime, he unexpectedly invented the phonograph in 1877.
This invention has introduced Edison as “The Wizard of Menlo Park,”
3. Fluoroscopy
Edison invented the Fluoroscope that could X rays in order to take radiographs of organs. Later on, he improved this by inventing calcium tungstate fluoroscopy screens which could produce brighter images than any other existing barium platinocyanide screen Fluoroscope.
4. Film
5. Tasimeter
The tasimeter, or microtasimeter, or measurer of infinitesimal strain, is a tool designed by Thomas Edison to measure infrared radiation, placed in this Thomas Edison inventions list.
In 1878, Samuel Langley, Henry Draper, and different American scientists wanted an extremely delicate instrument that might be used to measure minute temperature adjustments in warmth emitted from the Solar’s corona throughout the July 29 photo voltaic eclipse, as a result of happening alongside the Rocky Mountains.
To fulfill these wants Edison devised a microtasimeter using a carbon button.
6. Kinetoscope
The Kinetoscope is an early motion image demonstration gadget, placed in this Thomas Edison inventions list.
The Kinetoscope was designed for movies to be considered by one particular person at a time via a peephole viewer window on the prime of the gadget.
7. Electric power distribution
Electric power distribution is the ultimate stage within the supply of electrical energy; it carries electrical energy from the transmission system to particular person customers, placed in this Thomas Edison inventions list.
In order to deliver the benefit of Edison’s invention the bulb to the common people, he invented the power distribution company named Edison Illuminating Company.
8. Phonograph cylinder
Phonograph cylinders are the earliest business medium for recording and reproducing sound, placed in this Thomas Edison inventions list.
On July 18, 1877, Thomas Edison and his group invented the phonograph.
9. Kinetophone
The Edison Firm is thought to have experimented with this as early as the autumn of 1894. The movie exhibits a person, who might probably be Dickson, enjoying violin earlier than a phonograph horn as two males dance.
By the spring of 1895, Edison was providing Kinetophones–Kinetoscopes with phonographs inside their cupboards.
10. Movie camera, or Kinetograph
The movie camera or cine-camera is a kind of the photographic camera that takes a speedy sequence of images on a picture sensor or on a movie, placed in this Thomas Edison inventions list. Edison invented and patented his picture camera, or Kinetograph, or peephole viewer. However, most of the credit goes to Dickson, Edison’s employee for technical contribution.
11. Carbon microphone
The microphone for the telephone was called as the transmitter, which Edison was working on in 1876. He developed a carbon microphone comprised of sound resistant 2 metallic plated separated by granules of carbons.
The carbon microphone could work with direct current by using a transformer to transfer signals. By this concept, the improved version of the telephone was made.
12. Electric pen
Thomas Edison’s electric pen, a part of a whole outfit for duplicating handwritten paperwork and drawings, was the primary comparatively secure electric-motor-driven workplace equipment produced and offered in the USA, placed in this Thomas Edison inventions list.
13. Phonomotor
The phonomotor or “vocal engine” was a tool invented by Thomas Edison in 1878 to measure the mechanical pressure of sound.
It transformed sound vitality or sound energy into the rotary movement which might drive a machine similar to a small noticed or drill. It derived from his work on the phone and phonograph.
14. Vitascope
Vitascope was an early movie projector first demonstrated in 1895 by Charles Francis Jenkins and Thomas Armat.
The Edison Manufacturing Firm agreed to fabricate the machine and to provide movies for it, however on the situation it’s marketed as a brand new Edison invention named the Vitascope.
That they had made modifications to Jenkins’s patented Phantoscope, which solid photos through the movie and electrical gentle onto a wall or display screen.
15. Quadruplex telegraph
The Quadruplex telegraph is a kind the telegraph which permits a complete of 4 separate indicators to be transmitted and acquired on a single wire at the same time (two indicators in every course), placed in this Thomas Edison inventions list. Quadruplex telegraphy thus implements a type of multiplexing.
16. Vacuum Diode
A vacuum tube, an electron tube, or valve (British utilization) or, a tube (North America), is a tool that controls the electrical current flow in an excessive vacuum between electrodes to which an electrical energy distinction has been utilized, placed in this Thomas Edison inventions list.
17. Mining
In the late 1870s, Edison was interested in mining and developed a smart way to pulverize rocks up to 10 tons by using rollers and crushers. Through a magnetic system, the dust could be separated from iron ore.
18. Rechargeable battery
It was the late 1890s when Edison invented an improved rechargeable battery that he named “accumulator” cold be useful for electric automobiles.
19. Phenol
In order to speed up his lab work, Edison manufactured phenol in his personal lab.

Re: The NEW Vanguard TEAM UP! Haunt Issue #12 with special guest star Steeplejack!
"So... we sit around and wait for Holmes and Carter to return?" asked Starky. "I have a better idea. I can put my suit on and scout around! Savage, come give me a hand!"
Starky started dragging a heavy box from the pile just off the beach and opened it up. Watson frowned "I don't think we should be drawing attention, and a steam powered flying contraption definitely qualifies as that!"
Gibb turned to look at the madcap inventor/playboy and was about to say something when his eye caught the setting of the sun. It was a great orange globe drifting behind the skyline of trees and hills. With that would come other complications - he turned to Dracula/baron Alucard and Mina Harkness.
Their dark nature would surface come the night and that would bring new challenges. Was a varied, bizarre group they made! He wondered if Carter and he might be better off striking out on their own, but then the Baron could detect the Grail so... Watson and Holmes were a detective team par excellence, probably the best in ANY time frame, which got them a pass. John Carter was a mystery but possible a warrior with hidden talents, able as he was to break the bonds of gravity seemingly at will.
Captain Savage was a man of many talents. Linguist, explorer, scientist, physician, adventurer... the man's talents seemed endless.
Starky was a man who could seemingly turn his mind to any device or gadget or jury rig things on the fly. Gibb didn't doubt that should they come across ADVENT's devices he would be able to use them to his advantage.
Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde was a worry but even he might yet be useful, a master of early genetics. Indeed there seemed a valid reason for all of the people in this group to be here, but the main muscle as such, he and Haunt, would be the most tested he suspected.
==========
Holmes and Carter walked down a hill towards the village where lamps were being lit as the sun started to set.
After making enquiries both men (who spoke fluent french) were directed towards a farm on the outskirts of the village. All of this took a little time and so the sun was set by the time they got there, having stopped off for ham, eggs and other supplies both men carried in baskets having parted with gold coins that lit the eyes up of the village store owner.
The farmer was proving a harder sell and Haunt stepped aside as Holmes engaged the fellow in friendly conversation whilst pushing for a good price for a covered wagon and four horses to draw it. It seemed the farmer had been a gypsy/traveller at some point and the wagon was dear to him, a family heirloom. More likely word had gotten about that two rich strangers were paying for goods with solid gold doubloons and he was pushing for a better price.
As he relaxed with the last of the warm sun on his face Haunt turned to the side, eyes narrowed.
Somewhere behind the row of houses there was a flash of purple light, and a 'beam' seemed to lance down from the sky momentarily! Defintely not the sort of thing that would be present in this day and age! The flash had occurred several hundred yards away behind the rows of houses in the village near a large barn...
=========
Gibb listened to Watson witter on about supplies, the danger Dr Jekyll presented and more besides when he saw a beam of purple light lance from the clouds to where the distant village was that Holmes and Carter visited!
"Jumpin jehosephat!" said John Carter. "Anyone else see that?"
Heads turned, there was nothing to see now. Carter frowned. "Musta imagined it."
Gibb saw it too. With the light dimming there would be few, if any who could see a superhuman leaping through the air or flying on a chunk of earth. He could be over there - a mile or two distant - in moments to investigate...

"It came from the village..."Gibb said no more they all knew that Holmes and Haunt were there. But with the daylight fast disappearing and a troublesome set of problems with the Baron and Mina, let alone Jekyll, Gibb wasn't sure he should leave things unless necessity dictated no other course. Not for the first time he was again regretting they had no modern communication between Haunt and himself.
Looking about he made sure that he kept the Baron, Minda and Jekyll in view at all times. He didn't want such a distraction to give them chance to let slip the group for a midnight snack or something worse. A watch would need to be set for them if Gibb, ever the optimist, was going to get any sleep himself this evening.
OOC: OK so set a watch for the three stooges, and staying put for now.

Re: The NEW Vanguard TEAM UP! Haunt Issue #12 with special guest star Steeplejack!
Nick Carter walked over to the two men who were dickering, not knowing if they saw the purple flash or not. "Holmes," he said quietly, "I saw a purple flash of light over there, not far away. I'm going to go investigate, why don't you continue dickering with the man for our ride while I do so?"
ooc: Assuming Holmes agrees, Nick wanders over in the direction of the flash looking for some of the always present hedgerows he had heard France was famous for. Once he got out of sight, he shifted his form to bring forth his costume and changed into a large dog and headed over to investigate the light expecting trouble.

OOC Haunts costume is trashed. He needs to sort out a new one! (Unless I've forgotten something).
In large dog form Haunt trots over to investigate...
Sniffing about and being 'doglike' Haunt moves around the back of the barn and looks about. There was nothing... wait...
About fifty feet away he saw dissipating purple energy through a gap in the trees. Trotting over carefully he paused about thirty feet away behind a stone wall for cover as he looked on...
There were three figures. The tallest was female in shape and stood some seven feet high, her spindly form showing enough muscle to suggest she had a power about her more than her appearance suggested. The white armoured form glowed with purple energy. The orange armoured Advent soldier carried what appeared to be a powerful looking flamethrower...
=========
Back at the group Gibb glanced in the direction of the village and was about to suggest something to the group when there was another blinding flash only a few hundred yards away in a copse of trees!
"We ALL saw that!" said John Carter. He pulled out his pistol, glanced at it then slotted it away, instead reaching into his shirt to grasp a medallion. His form seemed to glow...
The group armed themselves whilst only Alucard seemed unperturbed. Starky turned to Gibb. "Coincidence? I think not!" he said, fishing in a box for what appeared to be a 1950s ray gun and fishing further for somewhere to plug copper wires into. "We're under attack!"
Gibb can't see anything - yet - but it seemed likely the inventor was right!

Gibb was sure that the group could more than handle itself, but what was it facing and indeed how would they work as a team. He had no doubts about some, perhaps a bit of grandstanding from Starky but Hyde and Alucard could be problematic.
"Carter, you Watson and Starky, come in from one side, Hyde, Alucard, myself and Ladies..." Gibb turned to the Ladies Mina and Anjali "Will you be joining us for our short soiree?...if so stay with me. But be warned if these are the alien's Carter and I are fighting against, then they are the like of which some of you will not have laid eyes on before. They are not to be trifled with despite their appearance."
Splitting the group up to the left and the right was a risk, but one that which Gibb hoped would help them avoid being surrounded if this was indeed a bold new move by Advent desperate to stop them. Such a move also made him realise they must be getting more concerned with the duo's progress, relying less on their agents and making a play for direct contact. Gibb moved off confident that he could move to cover the ground but more intent that they didn't themselves get surrounded before they had a chance to respond to the light that had moments before descended and as swiftly disappeared. He sought to use his heightened awareness and his connection to the very ground on which they all stood to alert him to the topography and the company he was sure had arrived to stop them.
OOC: OK using my danger sense and what not to try and get a feel for the way forward. Don't want to get my foot stuck in a rabbit hole or anything right now. I'm hoping both groups, mine and the one the other Carter is leading will be somewhat stealthy so that we can get a look-see at whose joining us, and then see if we can't get the drop on them.

Re: The NEW Vanguard TEAM UP! Haunt Issue #12 with special guest star Steeplejack!
OOC Apologies to you guys for the absence. Been a week to forget. Work/House/juggling kids/not having any social life and stressed out so missing sleep. These things are sent to try us
In answer to Dave M/Haunt, yes these guys are new and you've never come across their like before!
Haunt narrowed his eyes. There was something ... dangerous. Something menacing about these new aliens. The white clad one shone with purple energy around him...
Though he wasn't an expert on the subject he was an experienced hero and he'd been round the block. Mentalist or mystic most likely. Thus, dangerous. The orange armoured Advent goon had equipment and that powerful gun with a flame flickering at the end of it. Some kind of mega powerful flamethrower?
And the other? Thin, tall, lean, athletic, alien. 'She' (for the alien was slightly feminine in shape) was catlike, eyes narrowed, scanning about. The weapon hooked/slung on her back was a long sniper style weapon. Crossing it looked like a handle of a sword, a thin katana type weapon.
They spoke in an alien tongue...
OOC Comprehend Languages 10 + Roll(2d12)+0: 5,4,+0 Total:9 (19) vs
OV12 + Diff 3 + Roll(2d12)+0: 11,5,+0 Total:16 (31) Failed
Haunt couldn't quite pick up whatever it was they were saying to each other. He was still getting used to the fact he could understand languages, but the time distortion wouldn't make things easier for them!
==========
Gibb watched the other group move off and winced. Carter he could count on. The man was a warrior and something else besides.
The others? They were men of action but this kind of action was way beyond their usual job descriptions.
Sneaking around the side of the site where the light had been seen he glanced behind. Dr Jekyll looked sheepish, Alucard moved ... strangely. From place to place he seemed to fade in and out of view. Gibb would have to watch that. he was after all the legendary Count Dracula, regardless of what name he went by. Mina looked wild eyed and excited/frightened whilst Anjali looked eager for action...
Crouching in the bushes looking at the distant trio of aliens Gibb frowned. They were of a type never encountered before by he and Haunt. The fact they were here now suggested Advent wasn't happy about the stopping of their operations in Paris. More than that, they had some way of tracking Haunt & Carter and could 'drop' a team in on top of them practically.
With the time distortion it would be clear this would be a challenge...

==========

OOC: OK likely we won't get surprise so I am going to wrap them up in a heap of earth and see if we can't give them something to worry about whilst the rest then rush in to attack. I'll go for whoever looks to be closet with Martial arts leaping into attack them and no holds barred.

Re: The NEW Vanguard TEAM UP! Haunt Issue #12 with special guest star Steeplejack!
OOC: John Carter, on Mars, fights wearing a loincloth and sandals. Uses a "Radium" Pistol and sword. To Victorian era sensibilities, if he did that here on Earth, dressed like that, they would be totally shocked and outraged that a Gentleman would dress so!
The Haunt figures the possible mage/mentalist would be his first target as he might do the most damage to him. Striking from, hopefully cover and surprise, he elongates his "dog's" head, transforming it into a battering ram and stretches attempts to hit the alien.
actions: guess that is Omni-arm, stretching and shapeshift for a ranged attack.

Re: The NEW Vanguard TEAM UP! Haunt Issue #12 with special guest star Steeplejack!
OOC Was going to resolve this but just wanted to confirm with Dave E - you want to target all three? Sure? That's range penalty (about 4), difficulty (3) then Multi attack (4) added to the highest Dex (the tall one) meaning you have a slim to diddly squat chance to make the shot. You are likely to act first with the highest initiative and I just wanted to make sure when you broke cover you had a chance to land a strike. Wouldn't normally give a heads up like this so as not to spoil any surprises but this is a tough encounter (I just statted the bad guys up, then sucked through my teeth, considered dropping them a few points and left them as is. With that in mind I thought I'd offer the OOC advice).
Once you decide I'll resolve...

OOC: Thank you, what seems like it should be straightforward invariable comes into the domain of the rules and I have next to no idea here. I could gem upon them, but to be honest at the pace we run the game I'd doubt I'd find myself referencing them half so much so it would seem a bit pointless. But maybe I will take a look again at some point. Anyway no, you are right, I think that seems decidedly silly. So I guess the best thing is to disrupt the front line, so that I pull them in toward me, giving the other team coming in from the other side the chance to attack their flank. I will target the closest one with my earth-moving powers, either grapple, or open up a hole, or fling earth at them, whatever seems best within the rules or even just create a straight-up wall in front of them, to make it harder for them to target our group as we come in. Whatever seems best. Thanks for the heads up ;-)

OOC Steeplejack acts first... (Initiative 34, Haunt 26 before any dice are rolled)
He ponders, then the man with the ponytail thrusts a hand out to create a whirlwind to affect all the trio in the area!
OOC had another look and yes, there is a chance to have your cake and eat it. It won't affect all of them I wouldn't think but any is better than none.

Blinding two of the trio at least partially so that they were distracted and stumbling Steeplejack knew he'd have been more effective in his own time period. Still, it was a tactic worth trying again with the inventive use of his powers making it easier for his partner Haunt to land a strike...
OOC Ol' hammer hands (or mighty dog snout) shouldn't have too much trouble especially since Steeplejack just made the Priest easier to strike...

The Advent 'Priest' flies through the air out of the dust storm and tumbles over and over in the field!
The tall (twice as tall as a man) female (ish) Alien whirls about, first surprised by the dust storm then the huge hammer like nose proboscis thing that sent the white clad Advent agent into La la land!
"I was told..." she hissed, her voice clear and audible despite the whirling dust storm "I would be offered a challenge!" She moved, a blur of motion and revealed a long barrelled weapon (a gun) and took aim, testing, then grinned. "I hope you provide good sport for the short time you are on your feet!"
OOC
You're up. You *sort* of got surprise last round in that they couldn't use their skills to avoid the attacks even though they were scanning around and looking for targets. Now they know where you are.
Everyone else will act after you three because they are quite a bit slower... and you may find some of them somewhat reluctant to get their hands dirty. I'll leave you to figure out who that might be.
Steep, the Chosen Assassin then Haunt. Steeplejack is still 100' away but can close the gap if need be. Haunt is 70' feet away and can close the gap or attack at a distance with his super peepers.

Steeplejack lept into the air, his speed and amazing dexterity fully in play as almost weightless he seemed to span the gap as if it were nothing. Landing next to the would-be Assasin shooter with the gun to take her down, as fast as his skills and martial arts prowess allowed him to.
OOC: OK going for the shooter and all in with martial arts and devastating attack.

"MY! You're a fast one! No wonder the elders told me to not underestimate you! I was told my reward for defeating you and ensuring ADVENT can change the past sufficiently to rule the future was ... the entire planet! Think on that as I blast you into nothingness!" she hissed as she ducked and weaved...
OOC Haunt is up. You may want to bear in mind just how agile this opponent is, but the dice (just) helped her there by the skin of her teeth.

Seeing that the very nasty blade had a nasty edge, Steeplejack wasn't about to take chances, and sort to use his speed and skill to find a way to take this deadly assailant down before she got another knick with her wicked blade on him.

All of this damage is absorbed by the Chosen's Kinetic Absorption power! However, the Chosen is no longer bullish...

Rather than attack the Chosen Assassin instead... vanishes!
Haunt and Steeplejack look about. The Advent Priest (Mentalist) and Purifier (flame thrower soldier) are still up and threats! John Carter (of Mars) and Baron Alucard (Dracula) each face off against one whereas the others in the group are more cautious!
The Mentalist (Advent Priest) seems to be gesturing at Carter... what can it be doing? Meanwhile Alucard (Dracula) is somewhat wary about that flame thrower and the heat it is giving off.
Haunt is aware that whilst Steeplejack landed terrific blows he didn't put the Chosen down, which means it's still out there. Possibly licking it's wounds? Might it even now be watching them, ready to attack with that long barrelled rifle it had slung over its back?

Steeplejack shouted to the others, "Be on your guard that thing...is still about I am sure of it, it might well use these others to distract us from seeing where its attack might come from."
Looking about Steeplejack was so grateful to be on terra firma, his link to the land, was a distinct disadvantage when it wasn't beneath his feet. But there was no room for complacency. He'd given a good showing, but not sufficient to render his opponent unconscious. Advent where certainly upping their game, they must up theirs also.
OOC: OK on alert, danger sense primed and awaiting the opportunity to press the attack on the other creatures nearest me, or to assist any who need me when my turn comes.
