An office in Washington...

"Damn it! There's no way we can just 'let it go!' And nor can we let them go either! We NEED them, and if the limeys think they can make off with our ... whatever it is, after fixing it when all we've done is scratch our heads and wonder how to get in the thing without destroying it... well, they have made a grave error of judgement!" snarled the General.

A knock at the door. "Come in!" the General barked.

"Sir! We have a report of a... flying... object crash landing in the desert near Muroc Army air field."

"Groom Lake?"

"Yes sir. We have several teams en route. Planes flying overhead revealed the parachutes used by the device..."

"Parachutes?"

"Yes sir. Revealed to be ... ah... British flags. Sir."

The General turned to the man sat opposite. "You see? Roosevelt made a deal with his 'buddy' Churchill, who no doubt got that limp wristed fart Chamberlain to go along with it. Well I don't! This needs to be on a need to know! Sort it out!"

The man sat at the desk stood, nodded and left without saluting. The soldier at the door stepped aside for the stranger in trench coat and hat, shivering as the man passed. Did the temperature in the room just rise AFTER the man had left?

Waking after a coma with unexplained powers and abilities, a group of unconnected individuals comes together as the superhuman protectors of reality known as The Vanguard! Over time they discover the source of their powers, and the dark secret each holds within - they are symbiotically joined to an otherworldly Demon! It's clear the Demons have their own agenda, but for now it suits them to help their mortal hosts fight against an invasion of the Earth dimension by the demons' former subjects! Things changed for the worse when time was altered, so that the Nazis WON World War II! After travelling back in time, the Vanguard find themselves in new bodies, deprived of much of their power and out-gunned by a Nazi army of superhumans, aliens, advanced technology and mysticism! The shadows are darkening... and when the light fails completely? The Universe falls with it!

Now the Vanguard are engaged in a desperate mission to get to the moon, secure precious Lunarium, an element used to power spaceships amongst other things, and convince an alien race known as the P'utinarians that the Nazis are not the people to ally with! To this end, Lionheart and P'ertaria, a P'utinarian, travel along with three American soldiers empowered by General Wynn of the Vanguard in an advanced escape pod Lionheart used to leave the Antarctic, where a crashed spaceship from his own time lies in the heart of a jungle in the snow!

Frostbite, having encountered and worked with the Americans, notably whilst posing as the US' first superhero, General Freedom, was shot down whilst trying to return home. After helping the sea dwelling Atlanteans who shot him down, he returns to American shores only to be ordered to return to Groom Lake - Area 51 - to use the crashed spaceship there to get to the moon. He and his men, battered and weary from their trials, can only wonder what lies in store for them on this new mission...

Silver Sentinel, a new recruit to a secondary team of British superheroes known as the Justiciars, was sent to Scotland to investigate reports of strange activities. Whilst there he uncovered and sabotaged a Nazi base! He was captured, however, and fell into a coma, waking up at the Nazis Faroe Islands base encountered by Frostbite weeks earlier. Silver Sentinel found himself ... changed ... by the coma. He was now a symbiotic host for a Shadow Demon Noble! Escaping captivity, he managed to transport off the Island before the Nazi base was obliterated in a bombing raid! Now, a 'guest' of the US army, it seems he's about to be freed and soon able to return home.. but things are never quite so clear cut and easy for

Silver Sentinel...
(Steve Jenson)

Steve sat up on the bed he lay on as armed guards came into the room. They were in US Army uniform, but not friendly! The four of them levelled rifles at Steve, and one spoke. "You're to remain here sir, under armed guard. There has been a change of plan, though we haven't been told what that is yet. Whilst you are to be made comfortable be in no doubt - you are our prisoner!"

'Prisoner? I sense... a hand in this. Be wary, mortal...' rasped an inner voice. 'Note the third soldier from your right looks tired. He may be lacking in sleep from the previous night. If you were to attack, a lunge in his direction would yield the best results...'

Steve blinked. Under arrest? For what? What had changed? He knew the Americans were against entering the war, which puzzled him - couldn't they see Hitler would sweep unopposed across Europe if France and Britain fell? And the only alternative for the US then would be to sue for peace rather than risk war with a newly created superpower! He looked at the soldiers. They were just following orders.. but piecing together what he knew.. this place had been built up around the crashed P'utinarian vessel, a thing they'd not had much luck in operating or fixing. And yet in a space of weeks it had opened, disgorging not one but two British Superhuman operatives! He'd read about the exploits of 'General Freedom' in Washington DC, battling against suspected Nazi saboteurs. He'd seen the photographs, but didn't recognise the man in the pictures. Perhaps it was Frostbite, who had been here earlier, and was on his way back! Would he know it was some kind of trap? Steve glanced at the guards. They were vigilant, save the one the voice had determined. Over every other feeling he had a distinct sense of unease and doom growing about this situation...

Lionheart...

(Richard King)

Lionheart glanced at his hands. He could see some kind of outline around them.

"Are you alright?" asked P'ertaria.

World War II - The Vanguard Issue #2 (Crossover Silver Sentinel, Frostbite, Lionheart) 264i5g0

The three recently empowered Americans had stared uneasily at the alien woman, but she'd paid them no mind. The three had been chosen from the US Embassy staff in London as a gift in exchange for the Vanguard using the crashed P'utinarian space ship at Area 51. Though the deal had been brokered between First Lord of the Admiralty Winston Churchill and the American President, Franklin Roosevelt, Lionheart had his doubts that the Americans would hand over a prize so easily, even if the three men sat opposite him were the first in a new breed of American Super Soldier. Wynn had not explained their powers, and indeed, all anyone knew was that they had been empowered. Without testing, no one would know for sure what they could do. Lionheart felt an unease he couldn't explain, but his attentions were diverted when P'ertaria gestured to one of the few operating consoles in the vessel.

"I believe we are not far from our destination, but the fuel has run out. Our landing might be... uncomfortable." she explained.

"Is the Goo girl sayin' we're gonna crash an burn?" drawled one of the Americans. "Not if ah can help it!" he shouted.

Lionheart was distracted again. The sound of aeroplanes zipping past as the 'chutes deployed automatically suggested they'd not have to wait long for a welcoming committee. As the life pod floated down, he glanced at the instruments. Too fast!

Frostbite...
(Joe Hoskyn)

"Take a seat sir." offered one of the secret service agents on board the plane. Frostbites men had been taken to a different location. Wynns orders had been clear - they'd done their duty, but this was a mission of utmost importance and danger that only Frostbite and the others could undertake. It had been with a sad heart that Frostbite had bid his companions farewell, but they would be back in England sooner than he, and he felt relieved knowing that theirs would be a far less hazardous journey than the one he was expected to undertake.

<<Please pan your vision to the left. Thank you. Cursory glance reveals 8 armed secret service agents. There are two pilots and one stewardess aboard this chartered plane. Course and heading are estimated to be the Nevada region if the plane continues without changing flight paths. Suggest caution. Though the Americans are considered allies and friends of the United Kingdom, there may be factions in her government that view the exchange of resources as unfair and one sided, despite their having made no progress whatsoever with the alien technology in the crashed spacecraft. This unit suspects that only a P'utinarian would be able to properly operate the vessel, and that the vessel in the desert may need repairs before it becomes functional.>>

Though Joe was reassured to hear the computers voice in his head, the absence of the other voices (OOC Joe Rigdon and the Shadow Prince...) was a worry. Now, more than any other time, he felt alone.

A few hours later, with the steady thrum of engines in his ears, he woke from a light sleep. It was dark outside, looking through the window, and he raised his head on the seat slightly. The agents were moving about in the darkened interior of the plane, and all wore ... gas masks? Two appeared to be conversing at the back of the plane, arguing maybe, and one turned away, coming towards Frostbite where he sat on a seat. Having not revealed he was awake, Frostbite managed to catch a glimpse of a bottle in the mans hand, and a rag in the other...

He was suddenly aware of someone moving behind him!

OOC When you put your replies in, I'll post in individual replies to each until you all get in the same place at the same time. With regards Lionhearts powers. I'll stick something in writing and PM you Dave - we'll come to some agreement about his powers and the costs in terms of PSI points. I was thinking the main one to be to make an Energy/PSI simulacrum of himself that can operate independently of himself, but when combined 'ups' Lionhearts strength, speed, senses and other powers (save his PSI powers) for a short period of time as the energy being piggybacks his host before dissipating. Anyway, if that idea appeals, let me know and will write something up. It's kind of like a temporary version of Replication, save more powerful, but for a much shorter length of time, and costing PSI points. If that makes sense... We may be able to work it that the energy doppleganger increases the scale of Lionhearts PSI powers too, so Telekinesis jumps from 10kg to 25kg per PSi point, Still rubbish, but better than it was...?

Lionheart

With regards Lionheart's powers
.

All sounds good to me Paul, yeah go ahead and put something down and as you say we can work it out.

=================

Lionheart was distracted again. The sound of aeroplanes zipping past as the 'chutes deployed automatically suggested they'd not have to wait long for a welcoming committee. As the life pod floated down, he glanced at the instruments. Too fast!

He wondered what they could do, to make sure they landed safely, he was still unsure of how his powers had begun to alter with prolonged exposure to Saladin's blood transfusion.

"P'ertaria, I think' we're coming in too fast, even with the shoots. Is there anyway you can help cushion the impact for us?" Turning to the American's Lionheart said simple, "Brace for impact!" Whilst he himself sought to use his power, in some way to further slow their descent.

OOC: Not sure how I can use my powers, typically before I might have used Telekinesis and it may be appropriate to do it again, but if there is something better for me to do then lets go for it!

=========
Frostbite...(Joe Hoskyn)

He was suddenly aware of someone moving behind him!

Joe stayed still, he appreciated that things were not all that they seemed. How had Nazi's infiltrated America empowered American citizens and known where he was before to attack him? Clearly the computers warning was timely. Joe could guess that something was amiss, these agents were not like the ones he met before.

He remained still, breathing faintly listening as the men approached. He felt sure he could easily overpower them, but he wasn't bullet proof and had to make sure that then men about him, didn't open fire.

Allowing the two men to come as close as he dare, Joe went to grab the bottle with one hand, whilst bringing his hand up to punch the man with the other. Meanwhile he leapt back to shoulder the other man into the bulkhead.

OOC:

Ok I know in surprise you only get two frames, and I am not sure that this counts as surprise, but I'm making an attempt to get what I think is likely to be Chloroform.

So I go to should man behind me and strike out at man in front of me also:

1d20+3+9=15 man behind, 1d20+3+9=25 man in front I might have got my numbers wrong here, but I think the one behind is a miss.

Anyway I'm taking them down, but obviously not trying to kill just subdue.

Lionheart
(Richard King)

As the lifepod plummeted to the ground, the Americans started to panic! granted powers and abilities beyond mortal comprehension, were they about to lose their lives in this strange contraption, full of technology that didn't couldn't possibly, exist and sharing the ride with a British Agent and, of all things, an Alien?

P'ertaria turned. "I can be of assistance I believe. The door control, if you will!"

Lionheart unbuckled himself and used his superhuman strength to prevent himself from being flung around as he moved over to a panel. One of the controls they'd identified was the door, and with a whack on a plunger it hissed open, filling the inside with howling air! P'ertaria slivered out and expanded herself whilst adhered to the roof, becoming another parachute!

Meanwhile Lionheart concentrated. The Lion on his chest glowed and suddenly he seemed to 'step out' of himself. He could concentrate on this new energy form or his physical body, and see through one, or both sets of eyes at the same time! That would take some getting used to! The Americans gasped as the glowing energy version of the man in the suit passed through the ceiling of the pod and out onto the roof. He could see the P'utinarian had slowed the lifepod down considerably, but the speed was still too great. Looking about, the energy form remarked "aha!" and reached over to a panel, half opened. Grasping the panel with surprisingly solid hands (though it was in fact a manifestation of Lionhearts telekinesis, rather than the ghostly form becoming partially tangible) the hero pulled and released two more parachutes! Suddenly the Lifepod jerked and slowed dramatically, and a US Air force plane had to swerve to avoid the suddenly steady Lifepod!

It came down with a crash nonetheless, but was an impact that the occupants, though shaken, would survive, whilst the Lifepod itself was pretty much destroyed!

=========

Lionheart dusted himself off and shielded eyes against the sun...

He didn't need binoculars to figure out the dust clouds would be trucks and jeeps from the nearby airbase. P'ertaria moved to his side, calmly watching as the three Americans lined up to salute the first jeep to arrive, with a Colonel, no less, in command!

"We were warned you were coming, but that was a damn fool crazy ass stunt you pulled up there, Limey!" yelled the Colonel. "Our flyboys couldn't quite believe it, and neither could we - thought you were a goner for sure till you climbed on the roof and released the parachutes. That's another thing - parachutes? What the heck have you guys been up to?" He walked around the ruined lifepod. "We'll take this apart and see what we'll see. As for... " he turned to the three American soldiers who saluted "you boys, into the truck. We need to find out what you can do." The Colonel then waved to a Captain, who jogged up with a dozen armed soldiers... who pulled up their weapons and aimed them at Lionheart and P'ertaria!

"Sorry son. Orders. The President would disapprove but we tend to get away with whatever we need to out here. You and your... thing here aren't going anywhere, and you are certainly not taking our crashed spaceship! Best get used to the view.. it'll be the last you see of daylight for a while!"

OOC Dozen armed men and the Colonel, standing 3-5m away armed with machineguns. There are half a dozen trucks and jeeps lined up, and the three Americans are already in the back of a truck. Looks like there are certain factions in the American military who don't play fair, and consider a 'done deal' to be that only when it suits them...

Frostbite
(Joe Hoskyn)

OOC don't worry about the dice rolls too much - super vs normal guys, even agents, and you can chuck the rules out the window for a while.

Springing up, Frostbite caught the oncoming man by surprise, batting him out of the aisle and across two seats! The Chloroform crashed onto the floor, shattering! The men wore gas masks, pulled knives and knuckledusters, and moved in on the hero! Thinking quickly, Frostbite held out a hand, freezing the bottle and the gas escaping it before it could affect him! He was attacked from behind, feeling the THWACK of the 'duster across his suddenly ice hard skin. It hurt, but not nearly as much as it might have done moments before! The group charged him, as one, and a heartbeat later Frostbite was buried under a mound of bodies...

...only for them all to cascade into the air, thrown off by the ice covered man at the bottom! As agents recovered, solid crosses and backhands sent them flying, whilst 'dusters and knives glanced off near impenetrable skin! In moments Frostbite had laid most of the agents out, and hoisted one up by his jacket, tearing off the mask.

"Talk! Who do you work for?" he barked.

"Relax, Limey! We work for Uncle Sam... our orders were to escort you, but ... they changed. Our section head didn't sound too happy handing them out, but we were told to keep you quiet and out for the journey, in case you got wind and made trouble."

"Got wind? Of what?"

"We have no idea! All we know is that you are a friendly, and some of us were there when you busted up those Nazi saboteurs a few days back! We can't understand it either, but orders are orders! Hey... no hard feelings? My kid is gonna kill me if I don't get General Freedoms autograph!"

Frostbite was confused. What was going on? Should he believe the man, and if so, what action should he take? Continue to his destination or force them to turn about, then contact General Wynn? What would that do for Anglo-American relations? He was, after all, an American. How would Wynn, Dawson, Forbes and the others react to the news he'd been attacked on American soil by so called 'friendly' agents? He glanced about. The agents were coming to around him, slowly. He'd gotten the drop on them once, that wouldn't happen again, but none of them looked in a fit state for a fight now! Some looked like they'd be out for hours! He glanced at the Chloroform, melting now. He could use that, grab a mask and make sure they WERE out for hours, but would he be seen as an enemy, or worse, a traitor?

Lionheart didn't miss a beat, he was angry facing a war on several fronts allies pointing guns at him made him testy at the best of times. And it seemed wherever he went people kept pointing guns at him.

He thought about taking down the enemy with super speed, but then his the thee Amigos, his American empowered allies, might take the wrong side.

"I see so in direct violation of the chain of command, you've decided what you want. In direct violation of Anglo American agreement and in direct self interest despite us facing a known enemy. I'm no expert but isn't this at least a court martial offence and at worst going against the President, isn't that like treason?" Lionheart was looking toward his American counterparts to see what their reading of this was.

If he attacked and he had little doubt he would, he wanted to judge who he was going up against. Also his words and intent he hoped were clear to P'ertaria.

OOC:
Lionheart am going to take these lot down. Lionheart is so cross with being treated like a criminal by the good guys. But I'm trying to get the Americanos with me on board as well.

"Well we're in a pretty pickle arn't we boys. I can't trust you and you have your orders. So how are we going to decide. This?

Joe looked around, he had little choice, clearly American forces had been infiltrated at some level and as a result compromised in terms of the mission. He had to wonder if their every move was being followed and as a result what might the outcome of their trip be, if their mission and its destination was already known to the Nazi's.

Right now he needed to find some way to get to the designated area and find the others. Chances are, even if went along with things he'd not end up near the base, so he needed to let take a hand in things and go it alone. The agents had proven trustworthy only to the chain of command. He couldn't trust them.

OOC:
Joe will take the gas mask and move the agents toward the Chloroform and let them sleep it off. He then will go to the pilot and tell him to stay on course, to area 51 Groom Lake.

Before he leaves, he will sign a note for the agent he interrogated from General Freedom, saying something like "Stand strong for liberty and justice against the shadows of tyranny."

Steve waited untill the guards left the room, as the door was locked from the outside he could here at least two of the guards were posted on the otherside to watch his room.

"If the shit hits the fan we'll make a break for if it but Im not going to kill unless I have to, ok?" Steve said aloud but quietly to the raspy voice within.

"We need to find out what is going on here first and you and I both know I could easily melt the lock and make a break for it, let them make the first move."

As time passed slowly in the dark

"Are you listening and watching all the time my mysterious friend? .............Could you tell me your story of how you came to me?"

OOC: I just realized the silver sentinal doesnt know his story. You can just say the shadow prince tells him you dont have to say the whole thing because I know but my character doesnt.

Lionheart
(Richard King)

The Colonel barked an order "Think about your next move son! Don't do it!" The wily old soldier had read the much younger man like a book! And yet...

"Sir? We're not at war with the British!" remarked one of the soldiers.

"They are our friends!" shouted another, lowering his weapon. "If what he says is true, ah'm gonna be a traitor fer not followin' the Presidents orders! Th' hell with that!"

The Colonel turned, snarling. "You are relieved of duty!" he spat, unholstering his sidearm. Half of the American soldiers lowered their guns, the others hesistated. Only the Colonel acted with decisiveness! "Take this man into custody! OBEY MY ORDERS!"

The soldiers milled about in confusion and the others started piling out, including the three superhumans. Lionheart suddenly faced an army of thirty or so, and P'ertaria glanced nervously at Lionheart. The Colonel looked into the eyes of his men and at Lionheart. "This isn't over!" He stalked off, flanked by several of his soldiers.

Breathing a sigh of relief, P'ertaria turned to Lionheart. "Do we go with them? We'll have to watch that one..." she said, nodding towards the receding from of Colonel Haggard.

One of the soldiers that had spoken up came up to Lionheart. "Ah apologise, sir. We got orders from th' Colonel but we know when things ain't right. We ain't stupid. We'll check out th' story an' sort things out, but ah can't see as we start a war seein' as we are 'sposed ta be friends. That said..." he licked his lips nervously. "If it turns out th' Colonel is right... ah'm a dead man, and so are most of us fer not followin' his orders..."

OOC Lionheart want to go with the American soldiers? This could be a real leap of faith thing, and Lionheart might be stepping into a trap from which there is no mistake... or he could be proven right - and if so, what part is this Colonel playing in this drama...?

"Thanks Son, I've got you back. We're all following orders but we know that the Nazi's have a thing or two for spreading confusion. In times like this its easy to see how things get messed up. Now why don't we escort the Colonel back to base and re-establish the chain of command."

Turning to P'ertaria he simple nodded at her question but added, "Be on your guard, if push comes to shove try to remain in human form. If we give away who you are it might only strengthen the Colonel's objections."

OOC:

Lionheart will go with the others, but tell P'ertaria to be on her guard, Lionheart can't be certain that the P'utinarian's are behind this, but someone doesn't want them to succeed in their mission.

He will be on high alert and make sure that he doesn't stop keeping an eye on the Colonel. If he travels up front so will Lionheart, if he's in the back then Lionheart will be right next to him. All though this blowhard might not want to see his own men questioning his orders I can't imagine he'll get far asking his loyal guys to open fire on the others indiscriminating - so hopefully we've got some sort of truce till we get to the base and find out what's going on. Although I have some suspicions that if he was brought in and locked in a cell, it wouldn't fly unless those on the base were in cohorts with the Colonel.

Hopefully whatever happens they'll only have conventional weapons so we'll be able to talk them down if push comes to shove. But we shall see.

Frostbite
(Joe Hoskyn)

Frostbite glanced back as the hatch for the plane opened. The note on the chest of the slumbering agent had been left despite his anger at being treated like an enemy. The pilots glanced at each other, then at the agents laid out in the chairs, some of them displaying black eyes. Whomever the passenger was, he wasn't to be messed with!

Moving out onto the steps that led down tot he runway, he sighed. The 'welcoming committee' was out in force, and had guns out, aiming at him.

"Move carefully and slowly down the steps! We don't take any chances around here!" yelled a Captain through a megaphone.

<<15 men, all armed with submachine guns. Threat level minor - moderate. Suggest closing to hand to hand range to limit their effectiveness and taking them down in the most expeditious way.>> said the computer, referring to Frostbites fists!

Frostbite was uncomfortably aware of the silence of any other voices in his head!

Frostbite stepped onto the tarmac as the Captain stepped up. He looked tired, mid forties, unshaven, slightly dishevelled. "We've had a rough couple of days round here. Can't be too careful!" he looked at Joe, then flipped out a piece of paper, even whilst his browning M1911 pistol was levelled at Frostbite. "Ok, what name and rank did you go by in Washington?"

Frostbite frowned, then answered "General Freedom"

There were collective gasps and sighs of relief, and the weapons lowered. "Sorry sir." explained the Captain, holstering his pistol and offering his hand. "With the... thing you came here for, we've had an unusual amount of interest. Two missing scientists turned up dead yesterday, but we have witnesses who swore blind they were seen alive and well at the same time elsewhere in the complex. Now? Gone. No trace. Gives me the willies."

He offered to lead the way to the large group of warehouses and hangers that formed the base, and as they walked, the soldiers fell in line, some moving to the front to act as a form of shield. "Friends of yours landed only minutes before you, but their arrival was... less orthodox, shall we say. The Colonel is sorting them out. Colonels been acting odd lately, jumping at shadows and muttering that we shouldn't be giving away stuff even if you guys are giving us some guys like... well, you. Truth told..." he slowed his pace, running hands through his hair and replacing his hat. "We'd all feel a helluva lot better if you were back here permanently, using that shield and inspiring the nation! There's been talk of replacing you, but the effect to national morale would be devastating if your replacement were killed. There's only one General Freedom, sir." he said, grinning.

"I'm surrounded by traitors, gods damn it!" bellowed a voice from around the corner of a building.

"The Colonel." said the Captain. "I'm Captain William Mayweather, by the way. It's an honour, really." he said. "And all these boys making moon eyes at you? Instant hero worship!" his smiled faded as Haggard and the large entourage came into view.

=========

Lionheart
(Richard King)

Lionheart kept pace with the Colonel, followed by uncomfortable looking soldiers. P'ertaria stayed in her natural form - no use showing anything she didn't need to, with regards abilities. Besides, this place seemed on high alert, with soldiers glancing and jumping at the slightest shadow!

He'd gotten to the hangers/warehouses without incident, walking between buildings as the Colonel, hand on his pistol at all times, muttered to himself.

Rounding a corner, he saw a sight for sore eyes - Frostbite! Or rather Joe Hoskyn, his alter ego!

The Colonel stopped, snarling. "Why, if it ain't the turncoat? How's the weather treatin' you over there, 'limey'?" he sneered at Joe Hoskyn. Without another word he turned on his heel. "Hanger 12, if it pleases you ladies!" snarled the Colonel.

P'ertaria turned, watching the man go. "He seems... vexed."

"ya could say that... uh... ma'am." said the soldier who'd spoken up. "We're a top secret base and in th' last 48 hours there's been weird stuff goin' on. Noises an that from th' thing you come ta get, then people missin', and others dead. Then there was..."

"Hush you dummy!" hissed another soldier. "They shoot people fer sayin' stuff about anythin' round here!"

The soldier blushed, then moved back in line.

OOC Lionheart/P'ertaria and Frostbite together. There are now around 50 troops in the group, getting to the 'testing' level for our heroes should any fight break out. Haven't forgotten about Lionhearts new PSI ability, just been up to my eyes today with kids, pulling a tree up, fixing brother in laws computer, and having to go to work in ... oooo... 4 hours. I need some sleep, and will wander about like a zombie for first few days of this week I reckon Sad

Silver Sentinel
Steve Jenson

'You prattle like an old woman, mortal. Still, whilst you insist on letting yourself be held captive... I am with you at all times. Once I am bonded to a mortal that bond cannot be changed or undone, save with the mortals death, and even then a portion of that mortal stays with me. That is not through my choice, but my High Prince commanded it, and I obey. Your body will eventually adjust to the rigours that our power can place upon it. Be in no doubt. Across the cosmos there are many beings who might claim to have equal power to ours, and some may even exceed it! Nowhere in any of the infinite realities can it be said that there is more power gathered in one place at the same time than here, right now. Your friends - this... 'Vanguard' are collectively a great universal power. That power cannot be used lightly though, as some of them have found already. It is their humanity that weakens, and ultimately strengthens the bond between we immortal Shadow Demons and you puny mortals. Together we are the only chance of stopping the Usurpers of my people from conquering this planet, and branching out into the universe, even across time and alternate realities, for what we do in this life echoes throughout eternity.'
growled the inner voice.

'You may ask, why this place? There are many that might serve as a place to conquer and expand from by my people, but nowhere has the breadth and depth of suffering this planet can produce! And this war, this will rank as the most expensive in your history in terms of suffering and lives lost. Why should that matter? We feed on the dark emotions. Greed, terror, fear, anger, envy, hate... all those things and more are present in this time. The Shadow Demons are here and they work behind the scenes, teasing, manipulating and tempting. The weak and greedy are easily fooled into doing their bidding, then scream in terror as they are cast aside, a lifeless husk. Coupled with that there are men whose ambition knows no bounds, stretching across centuries! They bring technology that pollutes your timeline and changes your world forever! The birth of the superhuman age is now, rather than in the time 20 years hence when strange radioactive experiments gone awry, and meddling with cosmic rays and the like turned ordinary humans into superhumans. The forces against you are Legion! The Vanguard are truly the only force for good that stands between your existence and total oblivion! As yet... I am unsure as to why the High Prince and his family have undertaken this task, but they order, I obey.'

There was a pause, then...

'I wonder, mortal. Is it normal for green gas to issue from air vents?'

Steve blinked, lying back on the bed, then wondered at the last comment. Most of the other stuff seemed a flight of fancy, but the thing seemed willing to talk so he thought he'd listen. Gas?

He leaned over the side of the bed.

Sure enough, wisps of pale green smoke were issuing from a vent hidden from view under the bed! He was being gassed!

Frostbite
(Joe Hoskyn)

Admin wrote:"The Colonel." said the Captain. "I'm Captain William Mayweather, by the way. It's an honour, really." he said. "And all these boys making moon eyes at you? Instant hero worship!" his smiled faded as Haggard and the large entourage came into view.

"Captain, you can call me Joe. Back in England the Nazi's were working with a race who...I know it sounds strange, but they were shape shifters. They could take human form. Not sure why they were helping the Nazi's but that ship you've got here belongs to them. I can see why they'd be keen to stop us taking it, or for that matter anyone else getting into its secrets."

Joe looked from the Captain letting go of his hand that he'd shaken a moment before. "As far as I can tell, I've got orders to remain here, for now. But more than ever it needs to get itself in gear for the Nazi threat. So right now we better make sure this base is secure."

Turning to the men, who made Joe feel somewhat uncomfortable about, he spoke quickly at to the point. "Men the real heroes are men who do not have indestructible skin, whose armour is the courage with which they serve America and its people home of the free. There are dark days coming, but your courage does us all proud and I'm pleased to be serving with you. But we've all got jobs to do, so lets get to them. But remember we're on the same side!"

Turning back to Mayweather, Joe simply said, "Lets go meet the Colonel."

OOC:

Ok going with Mayweather to find out what the Colonel knows and also trying to get on his right side. I'm suspicious that the P'untinarians might be behind this and at the present I've no idea what Lionheart has been up to in terms of making friends with them.

So in talking to the Colonel its to try and secure the base, encourage him that he's not so much loosing a ship as gaining a whole knew weapon - namely me.

=========

Lionheart
(Richard King)

Lionheart moved over to Joe, a glance in the Colonel's direction and a quick work to P'ertaria. "He's a friend, like me, but he doesn't know a thing about you guys so no surprises, till I explain."

As he got close, he could see that Frostbite had been through the ringer, he looked older especially around the eyes. Though he didn't know much about his mission, he had to wonder what had happened to him since leaving England.

"Hey Frosty, you look like you could do with a weeks rest in a Refrigerator."

Joe's face broke into a relaxed smile, the America farm boy certainly looked as if he'd grown fast.

"Hey Richard, its good to see you. We better do some quick catching up. This place is jumpier than Bletchley was after that first attack the P'utinarians. Whose your friend?" Joe asked looking at the unfamilar face of P'ertaria.

Lionheart cast a quick guilty look her way, before brushing it aside, "Dice agent, Pertunia! Err!" Even he winced at that name, as P'ertaria raised an eyebrow. "Look..." Lionheart continued, "We'd better make sure this base is secure, we've had orders but the Yan....American's seem all jumpy. They wanted to arrest us and put us in a dark cell so we can't take this precious ship."

Joe concured. "We need to talk to the Colonel, get him onboard and find out what is been going on. Or at last find out if this base has already been infiltrated by P'utinarians working with the Nazi's."

Turning once again the Mayweather, Joe said, "Captain can you get us to see the Colonel. We're on the same side and the quicker we can coordinate our efforts the better for everyone. Hopefully then we can get to the bottom of your little problem here."

OOC:
Ok Lionheart, P'etaria and Frostbite are going to try and get an audience with the Colonel. Frostbite is particularly keen to find out if he is an alien in disguise. Also he saw the way Lionheart kept looking at P'etaria and is a little suspcious of her, but knows he is talking to the real Lionheart so trusts him.

Sounds like you've been having a fun day - busy, busy. Thanks for posting - I thought I'd not see anything till tomorrow. I wrote this post having read Frostbite then followed having read Lionheart so its a little disjointed in the middle but I figured you might like to know what I was thinking so I didn't want to rewrite it all.

Frostbite and Lionheart
(Joe Hoskyn and Richard King)
With: P'ertaria, a female P'utinarian
Where: Area 51 base, Nevada, USA

The Captain nodded, watching the exchange between the pair. As the group continued on its way he mentioned "We use this place to test new stuff out and... well, as you probably gathered, anything strange or odd that turns up gets shipped to here, usually under cover of darkness with heavy guards. Its supposed to be secure, a place where America can keep that which her citizens wasn't meant to know about - for their own safety and peace of mind - out of the way. For you guys to know about it... well, we'd never seen your like before, save in the funny books, so looking back we're kind of glad you stepped out of the thing Frostbite. I mean, Joe. Then the Brits make these demands, and our President grants them? All this time, we've been doing our part, keeping things secret, then we're told to hand over a prized possession? Hit the Colonel hard, I can tell you. That and the other..."

He stopped as the group turned, where an open hanger door showed the contents - a half submerged P'utinarian ship. It had landed here at some point, well, crash landed more likely, and the base had sprung up around it. However, an outer door on the thing was ajar, and blue light shining from within.

The Colonel and a few men had already gotten here first, and he pulled his pistol, the others their guns.

Around the ship, laying at unusual angles having been twisted and attacked, four soldiers. There were two men in white coats on the floor and they shared the same traits as the soldiers. All were missing heads and hands! Blood stained the floor, but nowhere near as much as the shocked onlookers expected!

P'ertaria spoke first "I suspect the transport pad has been used. Recently. The blue glow is that of the <no translation> engine powering down. Probably in the last hour or so." she looked about. The place was vast, full of crates and boxes, steps leading onto another higher level and a gantry ringing the place, shadows cast all about despite light at regular intervals. The soldiers in the group immediately pulled weapons and the Colonel barked "High alert! No one on or off the base! Lock this place down!" Despite their earlier misgivings the soldiers sprang into action as the sun set over the mountains in the distance, surrounding the warehouse and starting a building to building patrol, as they'd been drilled.

The Colonel turned to Frostbite and the others. "Looks like someone else is interested in this ship of 'yours'." he glanced at the six dead bodies. "I hope it's worth the price we paid for it." Turning to his men he shouted "Fan out! They may be about still! Pairs only! No one travel alone!" With that he set off into the long, wide warehouse...

OOC I need to cook up a map, so will do when I get home, providing my eyes still work :S

"Where with you, Colonel." Joe said, then turning to Lionheart and P'etaria he said, "I'll go with the Colonel, we don't want anything getting to him. I suggest you two take off together. My fear is that whatever is here, conventional weapons aren't going to stop it."

With that Joe chased after the Colonel, following him with his men. Lionheart turned to his P'utinarian companion and said, "Shall we?" Indicating a direction away from the other soldiers.

OOC:

Ok map would be good, but I get the gist of the room, big, shadowy many places to hide. And something nasty has been sent through.

So Joe will shadow and try to protect the Colonel and Lionheart will scan or use whatever means he can with P'etaria to find the creature, or be on high alert if someone else does first.

Spooky.

"Ok now its time to act" he said to the voice as he leaped from the bed ripping the white cotten sheet and covering his mouth with it.

Steve attempted to quickly melt the vents closed by passing his hand across the cold metal body

OOC: If it works then Steve will pretend to be knocked out and wait for the guards, if not..........

No time to 'suit up' Steve thought so he made his way over to the door which was previously locked and tryed to melt the lock. With a mighty kick he leveled the door (OOC: Any guards behind it?)

"Evening gents, just out for a spot of fresh air" Steve announced as he spot the tired young guard from before and proceed to knock him out

Silver Sentinel
Steve Jenson

Acting quickly, Steve gathered a makeshift mask from the bedclothes and stretched out a hand towards the vent. The metal oozed like candlewax, forming a seal, though he noticed it started coming out of other vents in the room, albeit slower. With two more applications of his power, he felt sure that the danger was past. Glancing to the door he moved quickly over to the bed and pretended to be knocked out... he didn't have to wait long!

The door opened with a crack and splinter of wood, and a voice spoke in a language Steve hadn't ever heard before! With eyes closed it was impossible to see who was entering the room, so he risked the slightest opening... he caught a glimpse of two US Soldiers coming in and looking about. He also caught a glimpse of two sprawled bodies in the corridor - guards from the looks of things! So who were these guys?

They started to move over towards the 'Sentinel...

Frostbite and Lionheart

With: P'ertaria, a female P'utinarian

OOC Sorry for delay - started to post then signals were start/stop/start/stop...Laptop is still hibernating mid post...

The Colonel turned to Frostbite "How could ya do it son? Ya President asks ya to serve ya country and ya turn him down?" He shook his head as they stalked through the darkness. The soldiers about them spread out, flashlights shining shadows into dark places. "Sir!" barked one. He shone his light above, where one of the powerful lights hanging from the roof had been shattered, glass on the floor.

"Yeah..." snarled the Colonel, chomping on his cigar. "They're still here."

==========

Lionheart closed his eyes, sending his senses out into the darkness...

He could virtually taste the fear of the soldiers around him. This place was several times the size of a football field. Some of the boxes were stacked high to the ceiling (OOC Raiders of the Lost Ark style) and the shadows they cast were long, and dark. He started to get an uneasy feeling.

P'ertaria knelt, touching an oozing finger to a smear of blood on the floor. "You know..." she said. "If I were a shape changer, moving from form to form, I would take care to eliminate the person I was impersonating, were I that way inclined. And to make sure no one knew who was missing?"

"Tale the head and hands off..." muttered Lionheart.

She stood, looking about. "The P'utinarians are an ancient race. We started a mass exodus of our world millennia ago. One of the reasons was an offshoot of our people, calling themselves the K'atinarians. Like us, but rather than being plant eaters, they devoured flesh - any kind of flesh - and were like rabid dogs because of it. Some were calculating and cruel, others mad, frothing at the mouth and unable to control their mad frenzies. Our parents tell stories of them to quell the behaviour of naughty children." She looked about in the shadows. "It... smells... like them. The rotting stench of meat." She looked genuinely frightened.

Somewhere in the darkness there was a scream, and flashlights buzzed in every direction, followed by confused shouting and running. Someone fired a shot.

Lionheart cursed...

Who was hunting who?

=========

The Colonel and Frostbite looked about...

All around them, once the screaming had started some way over to their left, the troops near the Colonel had spread out, searching every corner, shouting and moving with anger, rather than care. There was another scream! The wet sounding squelch of something ripping was heard from the right somewhere, and Frostbite gave a gentle shove to the Colonel who turned, snarling "What the...?" He was interrupted as as the bloody severed upper torso landed with a wet thud where the Colonel had stood a moment before and the soldier stared with wide eyes as the remains of one of his men slid into boxes, coming to a halt with a bloody smear.

The Colonel turned, firing indiscriminately into the darkness "WHERE ARE YOU?" he screamed, emptying the gun.

More shouting, firing...

=========

Lionheart saw a form stagger from the shadows up ahead...

The young man, a soldier, was wounded, clutching his belly. "H-help me!" he wailed. "Ah've been shot!"

P'ertaria, her body rigid with fear, hissed "We need to get out of here! If it IS a K'atinarian it grows stronger with every intelligent being it devours!" The threat of being confronted by soemthing from her nightmares was real, and she started to back up, towards the distant dimming light of the doors and the setting sun beyond.

=========

Frostbite and the Colonel heard the gunfire go silent all about...

"SIR?" wailed a voice. "Ah've been shot sir!" There was a pause, and the voice sobbed as it added "Don't let me die in here sir, please! Ah... ah can't feel mah legs!"

The Colonel turned to Frostbite "What the hell is it? It's killing my boys!"

There was a blood curling scream, cutting through the darkness...

"SIR!" wailed another voice. "Ah... It's got me sir! Help me!"

And another "Arrrrrggggh-SQUELCH!"

Now give me a hand."

Lionheart pulled the man up with ease, but still wanted to be in a position where he could attack if need be.

"I don't know Colonel, but we've got to get to a more defensible position. Fall back, men fall back." Joe was no coward, nor was he afraid of dying, but he did feel fear for the men around him, for those who'd died suddenly with little or no thought for them save a savage show of brutality. He to wondered what they were facing here. But right now he didn't want to see any more men loose their lives.

Dragging the colonel by the arm he pulled back keeping an eye on the men around him to make sure they to were falling back to the hanger doors.

OOC:

Ok I am trying to get back to the doors, and also looking out for those men near me, to group close together around me and the Colonel, or around Lionheart and the wounded man he and P'etaria are trying to get back to the doors as well.

We will engage it if we can, but since it can clearly move in shadows or is chameleon like there is little we can do. Although if Lionheart using empathic sense as indicated earlier with his mind reaching out, if I come across something I am going to try and tackle it.

As regards your routine this week - don't worry, I'm sorry my last post wasn't meant to add pressure or hassle you. Its simple that I thought it might have gotten missed. Its great you're able to post so much when you're at work. But just as and when.

I'll take a look at the Psi power, it needs some thought as you say. I think its one of those things I'm just going to have to try out and see, as to some degree its a bit abstract. But I'll give it another read through.

IC: Steve just lay there waiting for the guards to get closer so they could make their attack. He thought to himself 'they obviously want me knocked out and not killed ....... well not yet anyway or they would have shot me already.'

The wooden floor board creaked, the one Steve noiced earlier the one under the woolven rug approx two metres away.

'who are these chaps' the young brit though as he ready himself for action.

OOC: I'd like to ready myself, if they try to grab me I'd like to grab the nearest one, disarm him and use him as a human sheild (even if hes not human)

Frostbite and Lionheart
(Joe Hoskyn and Richard King)
With: P'ertaria, a female P'utinarian
Where: Area 51 base, Nevada, USA

Frostbite urged the Colonel back. "What? Retreat? Maybe that's what the English tell you to do when you're under fire, but not me! A Haggard has never run from a fight, and ah ain't startin' now!" Frostbite started dragging the man back, towards the hanger doors, even as he fumbled with bullets, trying to pump them into a cartridge. "What the?" he spluttered. "Unhand me dammit! Why you... hot damn, you're a lot stronger than you look boy!"

==========

As the Colonel was being dragged back towards the hanger doors Lionheart hefted the wounded soldier over his shoulder...

P'ertaria looked about, fear in her alien eyes. "It's coming for me! It's..." she stared at Lionheart. There was so much terror and confusion going on around Lionheart that it was difficult to pick out anything new. This time when he tried, it was easier!

There was a hiss beside his ear and he felt the form of the soldier shift in his grasp! Whirling with reactions no human could ever match, Lionheart dropped his burden even as the soldier exploded, showering him and P'ertaria in entrails! Aghast, he saw something rising from the gore splattered remains of the soldier...

World War II - The Vanguard Issue #2 (Crossover Silver Sentinel, Frostbite, Lionheart) 264m2yp

P'ertaria shrieked and immediately collapsed into a puddle, flowing away as quickly as she could across the floor. The Creature grew bigger and bigger, tendrils stretching off from it into the darkness. Other wet sounding explosions were heard, along with stifled screams!

=========

The Colonel continued to struggle but it was no use against Frostbites' superhuman strength!

As the pair neared the entrance to the hanger, and the spaceship, the blue glow lit up from inside again, shining bright through the narrow gap that had been prized between the outer doors.

<<Theory: Transportation device may be in use again, probable incoming hostile. Suggest: Caution.>>
chirped the computer.

Frostbite and the Colonel heard more screams, shots and squelching sounds from the darkness, and the hero let go of the Colonel as the man stopped struggling. "They.. they killed my boys.." he whispered.

Sounds of footsteps came from within the spacecraft, some 10m away. Frostbite had several options - he was only 5m from the hanger doors, 10m from the spacecraft and all around him were stacked crates, some a hefty looking size, so plenty of hiding places. He didn't know who or what was coming out of the ship... He turned as the lights from the ceiling starting popping out as something stretched up and smashed the bulbs... suddenly, aside from the light from the open doors, the huge hanger was plunged into darkness!

OOC 1d10=7, Lionheart 1d10=6, Alien for initiative, 1 frame. Frostbite not in combat yet but about to have company. It's near pitch darkness in the hanger now, and the soldiers have been wiped out by the things in the darkness. This is about to get messy!

Silver Sentinel
Steve Jenson

As the - whatever they were - got closer, Steve concentrated as much as he could to will the melted metal from the vents to slither across the floor and crawl up the bed leg to his foot, and start to ooze over his skin. By choice, he disguised it, so the metal went underneath his clothes. He would be naked if he willed the suit off but at least it wouldn't be seen immediately!

He knew the bed was of metal too - with a thought most of it could be used to cover his body but the enemy would know something was up as the bed would collapse!

He heard footsteps as one of them left the room, and some kind of wet, sucking, slurping sound from the other. What in the ...? What manner of creature were these? Dare he risk opening his eyes!

Joe considered his options, if he got to the hanger doors the Colonel might be free, but they'd still have no idea what had come through behind them. Besides which the Colonel might not be safe outside either. Joe whispered in the Colonel's ear, "We don't know what they're sending through, but if we duck out of sight we can at least get some idea of who it is were facing. This isn't sneaking Colonel, this is survival now!

He moved him to one side, gently but forcefully to where he saw a gap to hide, moments before the lights went out.

OOC: Frostbite will hide with the Colonel to ascertain what else is coming through and what else is going on. He will only attack if discovered, otherwise he will remain quiet and try to keep the colonel doing the same.

Lionheart wanted to be disgusted by P'etaria's actions but looking at the creature he began to have second thoughts. This was the things of nightmares and a devastating way for these men to die. As the lights started going out, Lionheart began to wonder how he'd be able to attack this thing in the dark.

Lionheart figured that the creature must either have some other type of senses so as not to be disadvantaged by the near total darkness. But that wasn't the case for him, he decided it was time to think about what to do next. Moving quickly, as only he could he withdrew to the hanger doors and where he remembered the ship being.

OOC: Move back toward the light, and the nearer to the ship - assuming the ship is near the hanger doors. Lionheart will want to force it to have to use the space, rather than have the advantage of stealth and darkness that the hanger gives it. Besides which Frostbite is here somewhere and Lionheart wants to make sure he is still alive to.

'What the hell was that noise? whatever that was it didnt sound human' Steve thought.

'Ok shadow demon lets go out with a bang shall we?'

"I believe this is'nt my seven am wake up call" the would be hero exclamed leaping out of bed with a MEEOO as his sentinal gaultlets charged up and tingled bright blue ready for firing into the nearest adversary.

"Surprise assholes"

OOC: Ok give it to me what is it, the slurping noise better not be a little girl drinking a milkshake through a straw because Im about to blast a hole through her head with plasma

P.S. Im loving the carnage picture

"Hide?" spluttered the Colonel. Then he saw the shadow cast from the blue light within the spacecraft, and huge red skinned hands grip the doors the Colonels' fork lift trucks could drag open. The doors hissed open, age old servos groaning under the strain.

An alien sound, unlike any Frostbite had ever heard, rang out.

World War II - The Vanguard Issue #2 (Crossover Silver Sentinel, Frostbite, Lionheart) 11v3cdu

The creature forced its way out of the craft and if anything seemed to grow larger!

'Akkkh!' hissed a voice inside that Frostbite had thought departed! 'Usurper!' it hissed. 'It has come for you!'

Suddenly Frostbite understood what the thing said, even as its height crept to over 10 feet!

"At lasssst! This mortal form will sssssuffice! Now... where are you Prince? I sssshall drag your mortal form back to the sssshadow realm!" it rasped, the sound not unlike nails down a blackboard!

The Colonel glanced down at his pistol and muttered "Ah'm gonna need me a bigger gun..."

Suddenly Lionheart sped around the corner and the thing looked down at him! The speedster screeched to a halt before coming in range of those awful claws, and looked up at a creature of nightmare! Made of the same stuff the other one was, but somehow more solid, tangible, in control, this thing was HUGE! He didn't see Frostbite or the Colonel in sight but heard the howling and hissing from the thing in the darkness behind him as it struggled to catch up with man from the future.

"You are not the Ssssshadow Prince! Tell me, mortal, where I may find the coward... and your death sssshall be ssswift!" snarled the creature...

OOC Frostbite to act, then the Demon possessed K'atinarian, Lionhearts remaining frames then the creatures in the darkness nearby. P'ertaria is nowhere to be seen. The soldiers have been slaughtered, and things are - as usual - looking grim for our heroes! One good (?) point is that the Shadow Prince seems still to be with Frostbite...
