Prof Wynde and Wonder Man TEAM UP! Issue #1

"Plants huh? Guess this world is wider and weirder than I thought," Prof Wynde muses. "Go grab them and then lets take out some super Nazis and their allies!"

"He's not coming back." muttered Bucky. The youngster was kicking pebbles on the beach and glancing out at the sea. Namor had been gone hours.

"Relax kid, the bottom of the ocean is a long way away." said Wonder Man, lying on his back and enjoying the sun on his face with hands under his head. "Besides, the war ain't going anywhere. Before long bullets will be zipping about your ears and you'll be wishing you were on the beach again."

"No I like that! Nothing beats the rush of combat and smacking some Nazis into the ground, right Cap?"

Captain America, sat on his shield as he watched out to sea, turned. "Hmmm? Don't wish for war Buck. It'll come to you anytime you want it. Remember, we broke orders just to be here and are considered deserters. In fact we'd be better off ditching the uniforms and fighting as enlisted men."

He glanced at his shield, noted the numerous paint scuffs from bullets and bombs.

Prof Wynde hovered in the sky overhead to keep a look out. Nothing. The sea was relatively calm. Miles distant he could hear the boom and thump of artillery fire and knew that Allied soldiers were fighting and dying to cover the retreat. If Namor took any longer they'd be wasted out here and the vast undersea vessel might have gone. Or... Namor might not return at all!

He sighed and looked out to sea.

"I hate to say it, but Buck may be right." said Captain America.

Wonder man was bored of skimming stones a mile out to sea or more and nodded. "Yep, he's split. We should too. Get back to the beaches, help with the evacuation."

Prof Wynde floated down steadily in the darkening evening sky and paused. What...?

There was a luminous glow in the water and it was coming fast! he flew back up again and looked out. Phenomenally fast!

He shouted and pointed but by the time he'd done so an eruption of water at the beach edge signalled the arrival of dark uniformed men and women! All had stern looks on their face, held tridents and what looked like bags crafted from Kelpie!

There were half a dozen of them and they marched onto the beach, stopping in front of Captain America and Wonder Man.

"Our liege bids us to deliver these to you and for you to make use of our swimming prowess to drag you to the ocean depths. To Aquarion, an Atlantean settlement no less." the messenger looked disgruntled. "No surface dwellers have been there but my King orders that you be taken there and made welcome. He cannot be here in person as he travels from settlement to settlement as only he can to raise the army for an assault on the surface dweller craft."

Cap America glanced at Wonder Man, Bucky and Prof Wynde. "Well guys, this is it!"

One of the woman warriors stepped forward. "Here." she said, handing over an oozing glowing yellow plant. "Eat."

Bucky pulled a face.

Wonder Man wrinkled his nose. "What is it?"

"If you want to breathe under the sea, you eat this." she snarled.

"Ew! But I guess we have to," Prof Wynde exclaims, as he takes the weird seaweed and tries chomping down on it. "Too salty! Anyone got water?"

Bucky passed over a canteen and the small group chewed down the salty but otherwise bland weed. It was like chewing leather.

Wonder Man pulled a face. "You eat this stuff all the time?" he asked of the Atlanteans.

"After a time the body adapts to the way the plants make changes to it, so you no longer depend on it. We ingest it once every few months and have evolved..." he tipped his neck to one side revealing... gills! "...to breathe water and for a limited time, air. These masks allow us to breathe and speak but the surface world and it's petty squabbles hold no appeal for us. This planet is 7/10th water covered and you people have only scratched a surface of it. Under the surface? We are the masters, and we will not allow transgressors no matter WHAT flag they fly."

Arrogant, haughty, disagreeable. Just like Namor. Maybe they had a point. Living beneath the oceans away from World Wars they were probably at peace. Raising children, growing, learning.

Possibly building an army.

Prof Wynde frowned. What if they were building an army ready to step into the breach after a world war weakened the surface dwellers?

He had to remember that this past was no longer his own. His every action changed it and it became - more and more - a new reality with new possibilities and dangers. If he could get back to his 'own time' how might that look? Would he be better here, using his obvious powers and abilities to change the course of this world's history for a better tomorrow?

"I said, are you ready Prof? You look a million miles away." asked Wonder Man. he picked a piece of chewy seaweed from his teeth and grimaced, about to toss it on the sand before a glare from one of the Atlanteans made him pause and he popped it in, gulping it down. "Needs gravy and taters." he muttered.

The Atlanteans waded into the sea followed by the four heroes.

"You surface dwellers should be considered Invaders to our realm." said an Atlantean warrior woman. Bucky cast an approving look over her and quipped "What are you doing after all this? What say we catch a movie?"

Captain America chuckled whilst the girl merely scowled and continued to wade into the water.

"The sea doesn't seem as cold." said Captain America. "I can barely feel it."

"The plant conditions your WHOLE body. You can swim slightly faster, breathe underwater and after several meals, will be able to see in the darkness of the depths." replied an Atlantean.

"Several meals?" muttered Wonder Man, grimacing. "Can't wait."

"Breathe as if you were in air. If you struggle, your body will not adapt and you will drown." growled the warrior.

The heroes looked at one another and took a leap of faith, the final step over their heads and... woosh! Under the waves, they looked around. All were - naturally - holding their breaths. Wonder Man, able to 'seal' his systems, took the first move and breathed out. Bubbles wooshed forth and for a moment he had a look on panic on his face as he gulped in and... relaxed. The others followed and Prof Wynde breathed out... then in. His will, strong enough to overcome the natural reflex not to breathe in, meant sea water flooded his lungs and there was a strange tingling across his body. That faded after a few seconds and the Atlanteans floated nearby. Some glanced at one another. Apparently they had considered the surface dwellers too weak willed to adapt, but these heroes, these... 'Invaders' were made of sterner stuff!

An Atlantean took each Invader by the hand and started swimming down, gathering speed.

'What if this is a trap?'

Prof Wynde spun. Who had said that?

The others seemed equally surprised but an Atlantean 'spoke' into their minds. 'Another side effect of the plant. Your mental prowess is sharpened to allow you to speak to nearby minds as you would with your primitive vocal chords. This allows communication. As for being a trap, Prince Namor has given his word. It is his bond. Until the surface dwellers and their war machines are expunged from the ocean, we are... allies.' He looked like he'd chewed on another lump of weed.

The strange group headed down into the depths, following the ocean floor which dipped away to form a shelf and gave a sense of disorientation much as a great height might.

Up ahead, the other Atlanteans had paused and the main group caught up. The Atlanteans were conversing apparently but not in a language the 'Invaders' understood!

'What's going on?' asked Wonder Man, treading water without effort.

The Atlantean girl spun back and swam to the Invaders. 'Prepare yourself Invaders!' she 'said' 'We are ambushed! Under attack!'

In the far distance dark shapes were speeding towards the Atlantean warriors. LOTS of dark shapes! They looked like ... Sharks! And ... Killer Whales! More than that, there were people swimming amongst them! All told, with a dozen human shapes and twenty or more sharks and orcas of various sizes, it was a small army heading their way!

'Jeepers!' cried Bucky 'Our welcome didn't last long!'

Captain America rumbled 'My shield will be useless down here, but we must defend ourselves!' He started to swim towards the other Atlanteans, prepared to fight the newcomers!

The Atlantean girl turned to Prof Wynde, Bucky and Wonder Man. 'You are ordered to stay here!' she barked...

"Maybe, maybe not," Prof. Wynde says in reply. "Now's the time to see if my magics works underwater or not."

He attempts to blast the closest foe with a small tornado of air.

ooc: I have no idea if it will create a tornado of air or of a water funnel or fail completely. If it does, his next attempt will be with his magic blast.

OOC I did wonder at that and googled that 50-80% of the oxygen on Earth comes from the plants under the sea but for the main part it isn't in one place enough for a power like Air Control to work, and a quick look at the book reveals:



Inoperative.

Magic Blast should be fine though.

Prof Wynde concentrates, but try as he might he can't summon up a tornado under the ocean waves!

He saw Bucky and Captain America swim off into the gloom and Wonder Man? Well he was torn, looking out for his friend and taking on the newcomers! After a moment's hesitation he figured Prof Wynde should be able to defend himself - after all he's saved Wonder Man's hide several times, so he started swimming - powerfully - through the water...

Though not as fast and powerful as the Atlanteans who, with a single kick or shimmy of their legs, shot out to meet the attackers!

"There are too many." said the Atlantean warrior girl who leaned in to Professor Wynde. "Our job was to get you safely to our realm - perhaps b or Themiscalia but those idiots have charged into battle as usual!"

It seemed of all the Atlanteans the young woman had the calmest head!

The plant offered some measure of being able to see in the darkness and Prof Wynde's own sharp eyes narrowed in on a target who was aiming for (along with an Orca and a Great White Shark) Bucky and Captain America!

Prof Wynde looked at his hand. Normally by now green eldritch energy would be flowing from it! Uh... suddenly he felt like the opposite of a fish out of water! Whatever he tried, failed!

The oncoming attackers surged in and the Atlantean warrior girl shouts "RUN!" through the water as she pulls up her trident and swims to face off against the newcomers and their monstrous allies!

OOC You can still skedaddle to a safe (ish) distance by swimming away... Otherwise the Orca and the Shark get a chance to take a bite out of you!

Let's put some distance between us and then try magic blast again against Jaws. Also doubt dispersal is going to work either underwater since it is basically air dispersal, slowly becoming the air he controls.

The Atlantean warrior woman engages in battle with the oncoming aggressor whilst the Orca circles her leaving...

The shark which powers through the water and closes the distance rapidly on Prof Wynde! The special seaweed seems to make him a slightly better swimmer, allows him to breathe underwater and even see to a certain degree in the near darkness of the depths.

It wouldn't allow him to outrun a shark though!

Prof Wynde knew he'd only have one shot at this! Without the protection of the damaged amulet a single bite from those powerful jaws would leave him in ruins!

He mouthed the incantation from a long dead language and formed a gesture with his hand, then took aim...

The Shark suddenly goes limp and tumbles through the water slowly, sinking towards the depths!

The eldritch blast proved devastating against the animal and Prof Wynde breathed a sigh of relief. The Atlantean woman was locked in melee combat with the attacker and too close to separate. The orca might be a viable target though and even at this range in the gloom was still visible - just.

OOC Stay where you are and blast or move in?

Sighing in relief, Prof. Wynde moves closer to try and do the same thing to the orca.

"So limited here," he mutters as he prepares his next spell. "But thanks goodness I have at least one way to fight."

Prof Wynde took aim at the circling Orca...

The Orca turns, seeing a new target in the water and swims right up to Prof Wynde, wanting to take a chunk out of him!

This time there was no mistake and Prof Wynde fired his eldritch beam at the great underwater killer, sending it limp into the depths where it would no doubt be devoured by others prowling for their dinner...

The Atlantean woman came over to Prof Wynde. There were several wounds on her body and she leaked dark blood into the water. Her opponent had been wounded and fled and she'd returned to protect her charge, only to find he didn't need it.

'You are... more than I expected.' a voice said in Prof Wynde's mind! 'Let's help the others'

The pair swum but she had to take PW by the arm and tow him - despite being able to breathe underwater he couldn't swim any faster! When they reached the battle site it was all over. Wonder Man, Captain America and Bucky had acquitted themselves well and driven off the aggressors.

"Who were they?" shouted Wonder Man in a hail of bubbles. An Atlantean frowned. 'Speak with your mind, air breather. We will hear you. You... surprise us.' The Atlanteans seemed quiet, respectful even. 'Even the young one acquits himself in the manner of a warrior born. Prince Namor was ... correct in his ruling we were to respect your powers and prowess. The forces of the usurper, Attuma thought us easy prey and they will report back to their leader accordingly. We don't have the time to chase them as they may well lead us into a trap which even our combined might cannot overcome. We must hurry.'

'Does that mean 'thank you' under the water?' asked Bucky, in his mind.

Captain America gave him a pat on the back and turned to Prof Wynde. 'Glad to see you are still with us! Let's get moving!'

Down, down into the depths into an ocean trench, deeper than submarines (at least in this era) could go, the Atlanteans and heroes continued downwards and the pressing weight of water thinned out the animal life to be seen.

When it seemed they were swimming down purely for the sake of it, there was a distant light and the heroes gasped! At the bottom of the ocean was what appeared to be a thriving community!



The Atlantean Woman explained 'Eons ago my people came to your world for the promise of life and an escape from war. We built cities on the land and watched as your people grubbed in the soil for their food whilst our machines and technology provided all for us. Things changed when foolish scientists created a device that would change this world to better suit our needs. A tidal wave crashed over the land and only our energy fields protected our settlements, and then just barely. Science development was banned and our people only survived by adapting from ingesting the plants we gave you. Over thousands of years our bodies have changed to prefer life under the oceans at depths that would normally crush you air breathers. We forgot so many things but we were happy and at peace. Now your wars intrude on that peace and some - like Attuma and others - say we need to declare war on the surface world. Others say we should let you tear yourselves apart. It caused a rift in our people and we fight our own civil war now, with the King and his son, Namor, leading what few settlements of peaceful Atlanteans there are left.'

Captain America spoke up 'Namor doesn't seem... peaceful.'

'Our Prince is young - in relative terms, though you would consider him ancient - and full of anger at the surface world's meddling that divided our people. You soil our oceans, you take all and give nothing back. You drain the fish stocks and force our people to spread further apart to find food. yet our King will not declare war on you, and he was right to do so when the traitor Attuma - his former General - took loyal elements of the army and formed his own upstart kingdom.'

Bucky mused 'So... you want us to fight this Attuma for you as well?'

There was a pause then 'Namor feels he owes you for not slaying him when you could have done.' she glanced at Prof Wynde 'But he is torn between honour and duty. You will be taken to our King to state your case for our aid in fighting your enemies, and I suspect the price for that will be to aid us against Attuma. If you wish to turn around back to the surface, make the choice. Now.' she said.

"In for a penny, in for a pound," Prof. Wynde says with a shrug. "Be nice to get some allies who can help us on the oceans."

ooc: Found a couple of pages of his first story and origin

Wonder Man shrugged. "If my friend here is happy to pitch in, he speaks for me too."

"I see this as a chance to show Namor that not all of us on the surface world disrespect the oceans and the life therein!" said Captain America. "My people are reluctant to enter the war and I risk court martial simply for having jumped on a plane to get over here, never mind wearing this suit and using this shield, but at some point America MUST fight the Nazi scourge! If they don't they'll consolidate their gains in France and the European mainland and our friends and allies in Britain will soon be overrun!"

"Golly! That would be... terrible!" gasped Bucky.

"Sure would Buck. Therefore we... what did you call us... 'Invaders'? We Invaders will stand alongside your people to show that we can be valuable friends and allies. If you decide not to help us after that? I say we part as friends. If you decide to help us? We fight together as Allies to drive the Nazis from your sea!" added Captain America.

The Atlanteans glanced at one another and Prof Wynde saw their puffed up chests, determined looks and steely eyed gaze. Captain America might be somewhat of a cornball but he could deliver a rousing speech and he was of the times. In the future, where Wynde hailed from, he might be a relic or laughed at. In the here and now? He was a hero!

The Atlanteans were pleased at the Invaders offer of help and raised their tridents in triumph! Attuma would pay for turning against their people!

OOC never seen that origin of Namor before. I'd better incorporate something into how he looks human ish and can survive out of water.

When that is done I hope that my King shall see fit to lend you his army to fight against these 'Nazis' you speak of and I would be proud to fight alongside you. Bucky seemed pleased at this and gave a boyish grin. "Any more gals like you under the seas?" he asked, and was rewarded with a playful punch to the shoulder by Captain America.

"The way to the next settlement is not far, but we must circumvent a deep crack in the ocean floor. We sent a part to investigate it when one of our fishing groups reported a strange glow coming from its depths." said Meranna. "They never returned and now it is off limits to all. It will cause some delay but better than than to succumb to whatever terror resides in the deep." She shuddered.

Atlanteans were variously blue skinned or green skinned, his mother blue-skinned, the emperor [his grand-father I think] green-skinned.  He and his cousin Namora were the only two white skinned Atlanteans as they were half-breeds.

This is the first and last two pages of AQUAMAN'S first appearance and origin story.

Namora, the Sea Beauty - the Sub-Mariner's cousin and like him half-human and half-atlantean. Those wings on her head aren't real but part of her headband. First appeared in 1947 in Marvel Myster Comics #82

"I think we should investigate that glowing crack," Prof. Wynde says after thinking it over. "Some of our foes, believe it or not, come from a different time in the far future and from another planet entirely. They are behind many of the super-weapons and men who are part of the Nazi armies. They may be aiding this Attuma fella as well. This glow may be where their underwater base is."

Wonder Man shrugged. "Better to investigate it now than leave it behind us to find out it's a problem we could have solved earlier."

Captain America nodded. "I agree. Tell me Meranna, how many of your people will aid us?" he looked at the warriors gathered about.

The Atlantean woman did so too. All of a sudden they found somewhere else to look. They would happily fight the forces of Attuma and any who dared threaten the oceans but all of a sudden they seemed afraid as superstitions and ancients fears were brought to the surface! Tales told around the evening meal, stories to frighten children, yet all knew that any who had been sent to investigate the glow from the crevice at the ocean bottom had never returned, regardless of how many were sent!

"I shall go! These warriors will fight Attuma alongside Prince Namor and redouble their efforts to compensate for your absence!" she declared. "Come, Invaders, let us solve the mystery of what lies on the ocean bed once and for all!"

With that she swum off and the Invaders followed. Captain America, Bucky, Wonder Man and Prof Wynde along with Meranna the Atlantean she warrior!

What lay ahead of them, at the ocean bottom? Find out in...



OOC Updates later

The darkness was near total but the wondrous plant they'd ingested allowed the group to see a limited distance in the gloom, as well as withstand the tons of pressure of the water on their bodies!

Descending into the gloom they saw that the gap was a crevice, and some distance below, at the bottom, was a distant glow.

Meranna explained. "Our sub leader sent warriors to retrieve those that had vanished before. When they did not return he was torn between sending an even larger force and simply declaring the place off limits." she said in their minds. Her 'link' allowed all to speak in a fashion to each other as spoken words were garbled in the water.

"Since then tales have grown what might be down there."

Prof Wynde, from the future, might have had his own theories. With the possibility of time travel, ADVENT could have 'set up shop' down there years, decades even centuries ago, planning for the moment to strike!

Or it could be something else, something powerful and sinister enough to kill or capture the superhuman Atlanteans. Were they going to their doom?

Captain America spoke up. "If we can solve the mystery of what is down here and rescue the Atlanteans, it will go a long way towards convincing Namor and his people that we are on the same side against the Nazis! If only I could convince our politicians that staying out of the war will only strengthen the Nazis in the long run!"

"Just ten minutes in Congress Cap, that's all you'd need!"

"If only Bucky. The wise and learned politicians see a war as an expense we can ill afford with so many still recovering from the effects of the market crash of 29."

"I was just a little kid when that happened Cap. I do remember my father crying though."

"It was a hard time for everyone Buck, me included. I'm not that much older than you pal!"

"Hush!" said Meranna.

The chatter stopped as did the swimming.

"Something's coming." she said. The Invaders strained their eyes but could see nothing in the darkness below them beyond fifty feet or so...

"Scatter and hide on the ocean's bottom," Prof Wynde advises, taking his own words to heart and sinking down to hide behind some seaweed or a coral projection or whatever gives him some cover and still lets him see what's coming..

The group split up and headed for cover behind rocks and what plant life there was.

The glow mostly seemed to come from crops of the plants that the Atlanteans had fed the heroes and aside from that this place was as dark as any place on earth could be!

Seeing his buddy Wonder Man only twenty feet or so away from him give a thumbs up Prof Wynde peered from behind the rocks.



They were huge - eight or more feet tall and almost as wide, crustacean like nightmares with six limbs and looking like they'd stepped from nightmares! Those claws... and they had weapons in them too.

They seemed to be scouring about and collecting something from the ocean floor. Too dark to see what but there were half a dozen of the things.

Then Prof Wynde saw something shining slightly. Something metallic. Part of something broken. A weapon. An Atlantean weapon.

Every Atlantean who had come down here had met their doom... and the things from nightmare were covering up all trace of it, presumably so the glowing crops the Atlanteans used for food would act as bait for more of their kind!

ooc: How many Atlanteans are with us? I'm thinking I can get surprise attack on one of them with my magic blast. Cap and Bucky can keep one of them busy. Wonderman might/maybe/probably can take out one on his own. That leaves 3 if there are an actual half dozen of them. If I have enough Atlanteans to keep those 3 busy I can get to work magic blasting the rest. That's my current thinking anyways.

ooc: Yeah, even with my accuracy, not confident in a multi-attack. Well, let's try a simple attack on one and hope Wonderman and Meranna can hold the others off long enough for me to try blasting the others one by one. Though, once the aliens get into hand combat range where no range penalties exist, then multi-blast might work.

Prof Wynde mouthed the incantation by mouth though in truth no sound came from his lips.

Prof Wynde steps from behind a rock and hols his hands steady as magical energy forms around them. Then he unleashes a powerful magic blast that strikes the Lobster Man, causes it to arch backwards then fall to the sea bed!

Instantly Wonder Man and Meranna started swimming forwards whilst Bucky and Captain America make for a target of their own!

The Lobster Men stop trimming the glowing plants and look up, then in a blur of motion they start forwards to attack!

So fast! How can something so big move so quickly???

From Prof Wynde's standpoint he sees the Lobster Men move forwards then the view is obscured as silt and mud are thrown up in a huge cloud, completely obscuring his sight! The Invaders pause at the edge of the cloud, unable to see within its depths. Meranna swims up and around looking for an opening...

Suddenly a lobster claw launches out to snatch at Wonder Man!

THWACK! Wonder Man lands a jaw shattering blow and the nigh on invulnerable carapace of the Lobster Man cracks and splinters like almost shattered glass! There is a screech and the creature vanishes into the murk cloud...

Wonder Man pauses for a second then swims over to Prof Wynde. The weed they'd ingested allowed a strange kind of short range mental communication it seemed and Prof Wynde heard his friend clearly despite them both being miles down at the bottom of the ocean!

"Can't see the others! Those things have done this before! Churn the water up and attack from the cloud, snatching victims up and pulling them in then chopping them up! Horrors! It's like hitting steel..." he said, rubbing his fist. "Luckily I can bend steel without much effort! We need to keep our distance. I don't fancy testing my skin against their pincers! I hope the others stay clear!"

The pair looked about but other than the huge murk cloud couldn't see Captain America, Bucky or Meranna...

OOC You're up. You can't see any of the bad guys in order to target them so any shot will be fired blind into the cloud should you wish to do so...

"Too bad I can't use my wind magic underwater," Prof. Wynde "complains" to Wonderman. "Even though it is made of oxygen and hydrogen, two big parts of air. So all I have left is my magic blast. And magic sense and these guys aren't magical."

"See if you can find something big to throw into that "dust" cloud, a sunken ship, a huge rock, something. I'll just keep blasting and hope for the best."

"Everyone! Pull back from the churned water! They have the advantage there. Wait them out until they pop out and come for you," he then yells to the others.
