Stone Fist saw the nightmarish creature reach for him, and it roared, the sound like nails screeching on a blackboard!

What had happened? How had he been transported here, and where had Jade Hood gone? Did this creature know, and if so, how could he get it to...

A glance along the length of the writhing snake mouthed tentacles revealed a vaguely humanoid body - of sorts - clad in a dark green hood and cloak! From the dark depths of the hood, a serpentine tongue flickered, and the creature, for it could not be called a man, stepped towards Stone Fist, reaching for him!

He was a strong man, but the fear inside him chilled him to his core! Would he curl up, like some child afraid of the dark, or would he 'man up', face the beast and force it - somehow - to tell what it had done with his friend?

Jade Hood was confronted by a wild look on Stone Fists' face - a cross between terror and incandescent rage!

The servants would be in the corridor in moments, mere heartbeats! It didn't look like Stone Fist would go easily into the room!

Looking about him, Jade Hood looked for a way to break through, the hold the gas clearly had on his friend and his senses.

OOC: Ok I'm looking for something with water in it that I can try and splash over Stone Fist to break the Psychological hold the drugs have. If I can find something like a filled vase I'll go for a slap around the face. In any case assume I am using Hero points. If all else fails and all I do is provoke Stone Fist I will at least try to do it so I lead him into the room, and away from any oncoming servants.

Jade Hood backed off and turned... Where had he seen something with water in?

He groaned inwardly - there'd been plenty to drink at the party, and doubtless the servants would know where to get some!

Stone Fist, for his part, saw the monstrous beast back off, but knew it was trying something insidious! What had it done with his friend?

OOC Perception roll for Jade Hood... Using 2HP on Acting value... Roll 4+5 (9) Success. Jade Hood is on 28HP

Turning, grabbing the nearest door handle and pushing the door open, Jade Hood looked about the room inside - empty save for furnishings as might be expected in a guest room and... a jug of water...

OOC Danger Sense... Roll 1,8 (9) Success

Jade Hood knew he was not alone! Looking around, the room had a bed, a couple of chairs, a wardrobe, window to the outside of the house, bedside dresser (with the aforementioned jug of water on) and the distinct feeling he was not alone in here! Except he couldn't see anything or anyone else!

Behind him he heard Stone Fist stalking him - in moments his friends iron hard hands would close around his neck!

OOC Stone Fist gets an opportunity to resist the drugs affecting him... Roll 10,8 (18)

Without a moment to spare, Jade Hood whips the jug up, heedless of the danger from the room he was now in or his maddened friend behind, and throws the water at his friend...

At that moment Stone Fist looks about and mutters "What was that?" as he coughs and looks around at the room (he's now stood in the doorway).

Then he gets a face full of water!

Splash!

Jade Hood sees the expression of his friend change and realizes whatever had caused the change in his behaviour had worn off - or been resisted somehow!

Dripping wet, Stone Fist realizes he'd been closing in on his friend with fists raised - they were being manipulated and turned against one another, and he didn't like the feeling!

Outside in the corridor, there were raised voices and shouts as servants saw the smoke coming from the room opposite - which they took to be a fire! They probably hadn't seen Stone Fist and Jade Hood yet, stood as they were in the room on the other side of the corridor.

However, the alarm was well and truly raised now - would the pair hide, to ride it out, or take their leave? And would they ever find out what really happened here?

OOC: Hmm nicely done, into the fire from the frying pan!

Jade Hood quickly closed the door, but not all the way so that they could still take a look outside. As he did he motioned with his other hand that they were not alone. Some sense, some honed instinct told them that there was further danger present with them.

But knowing that his friend had finer senses than he himself possessed, Jade Hood reasoned that Stone Fist might be able to detect an assailant where he could not. With one eye and one hand on the door still, Jade Hood continued to keep an eye on the corridor outside. Mindful that the servants might try to evacuate the place, blowing any chances the heroes might have on catching on to what was really going on here.

Stone Fist steps into the room, allowing Jade Hood to close the door and let's his partner stand there at the door. When he realizes his friend thinks that they are not alone, he starts to look around. He moves as quietly as he can. He checks under the bed, in the closet and out the window.

Whilst Jade Hood listened at the now closed door for the scuffling feet and confused voices of the servants, Stone Fist looked about the room...

His changed, superhuman eyesight was similar to that of a cat. By snuffing out the gas lamp by the door only the lights from outside illuminated the room, and his 'ultra vision' for want of a better word, came into play.

His eyes seemed to absorb and interpret the flow of ultra violet light, electrical impulses given off by devices and even living beings, and probably other means which Stone Fist either could not fathom or could care less about.

OOC Roll 8,9 (17) with Ultra Vision 5 against Invisibility 4... Success.

The flow of electrical impulses around a certain area of the room, near the window, caused Stone Fist to squint. THERE! A vaguely human shape, slowly coming into focus as a human figure (without details visible with his Ultra vision) stood near the open window. Stone Fist frowned, then realised what he was looking at, and what his friend Jade Hood could not see!

An invisible man!

He was stood some 20' away from where Stone Fist stood.

Suddenly there was a knock at the door, and a shouted voice. "Anyone in there?" came a call in accented English. Then the door handle started to turn...

The only invisible man Stone Fist knew of was the scientist from the future. It was possible that there was more than one of them though. He leapt across the room to stand next to the invisible man, preparing to strike if he needed to. He left the door to Jade Hood.

ooc: While I can't see the details, is the outline and build similar or different than the man I know? If different, I may need to attack him.

Stone Fist leapt across the room with a hop and landed next to the invisible form, which reacted with surprise!

All of a sudden something appeared in the air at the invisible mans feet and shattered on the floor, causing more of that strange green smoke to billow upwards! In heartbeats it would engulf Stone Fist! He could stand there and attack this fellow, who did not seem to resemble the Scientist they knew, but risk being affected by the gas again, or he could back off. Perhaps there was something else he could do, but one thing was for sure - just a whiff of that gas would affect him, and only him, making him see monsters where there had been friends, previously!

Jade Hood prepared for the door to open, and sure enough it did, with a turban headed servant poking his head in to look around! "Sahib!" he cried at the sight of Stone Fist across the room, then Jade Hood struck like a Cobra, reaching for the fellow from the side!

OOC Attack roll 2d10 → [6,8] = (14) AV7 vs OV2 Attack hit with 2 Column Shifts. EV7 vs RV2. 8RAPs. Drops the guy out for the count!

With an expert sleeper hold, Jade Hood simply applied pressure to certain points of the servants neck and lowered him gently to the floor before closing the door - the glimpse he'd had of the corridor revealed other Servants investigating other rooms and the cause of the mysterious smoke.

Jade Hood turned and saw the green smoke billowing outwards and starting to rise to head level! Stone Fist was stood right next to it .. and now with the smoke boiling outwards the pair of them could see a rough outlined figure, dressed in a robe though no other details could be made out! He was invisible like their ally the Scientist could become!

OOC Stone Fist has a moment before the Green Smoke engulfs him! It will fill the room as well...

Jade Hood nodded as he gasped a last few lungfuls to oxygenate his blood and then clamp down. He could only hope that the smoke itself would reveal their quarry as he tried to move away or even escape. With the door covered that only left...the window? Jade Hood wasn't sure, but hoped his friend would strike now and ask questions later.

OOC: Ok if Stone Fist hits this guy, it might just stop the smoke coming out, or else grabs for him so he can't escape. Not sure what else I can do at present other than cover the door and go through the servant's pockets, after all I could take his clothes for a disguise now also!

The vial hit the floor and the smoke boiled outwards!

This time prepared, the pair took in a good lungful of air before the room was filled with the strange green smoke! Therein lay another problem - without any ventilation the smoke might well hang in the air, and the heroes wouldn't be able to hold their breath forever!

Though... Stone Fist felt strange. His lungs did not have that burning sensation that came when holding breath, nor did he feel like he needed to breath in - perhaps he could hold his breath longer than usual if he so tried? There was something else... He wasn't sure how, but he knew, instinctively, that something in his body had changed! Had this green gas been targeted specifically for him, as Jade Hood hadn't been affected and been stood close by? What was more, he had the strangest feeling that he could breathe in this gas, or indeed any kind of gas, poison or radiation, and it would not affect him?!?!

He wasn't sure how he knew this, he only knew that it was so - and that his body had adapted to gain these strange abilities in the last few moments!

Meanwhile Jade Hood saw a waft of green gas that suggested the invisible man was heading towards the window to make his escape! Stone Fist saw it too, and made to grab the fellow!

OOC Attack roll 2d10 → [5,5] = (10) (DOUBLE!) plus 2d10 → [8,7] = (15). Total 25, success! (And then some). You can choose to restrain or inflict damage, like a sleeper hold on the invisible opponent. You can see him fine with your Ultra vision. The other problem of being able to breathe clean air will raise its head, but not for a minute or two. Stone Fist is pretty sure that he can hold his breath for longer than that (he never really needed to try before now) and more amazingly, he might well be immune to most gas and poison attacks now that his new ability has been 'activated' since the last attack... though you will have to try it out to be sure...

See how his friend had managed to apprehend the invisible foe, Jade Hood gave one more listen at the door before heading to the window. The very window their enemy had made for, and after a cursory glance sought to open it as quickly as he could. If he could but open it a crack it might allow some ventilation in and the opportunity for him to avoid breathing in any more of this poison gunk.

OOC: Ok so assuming that no one sounds as if they are going to burst in a check on a missing servant, I'll go to the window to open it a crack. I'll make sure its safe to do so and try to do it in such a way as not to draw any attention from folk out side that might be gathering assuming the place is on fire.

However if there is any noise outside that might be someone rushing in, I think I'll either lock the door from within or wedge a chair there for the time being. We might need to escape out the window.

Stone Fist held the invisible man easily but held him in such a way that covered his mouth to prevent him from yelling out. He also gave the man a warning squeeze, letting him know that he could easily knock the man out if he caused problems but didn't try to harm him ... yet.

He was surprised at how his body continued to change and wondered what he would finally wind up being after a few more months or years. He hoped he wouldn't turn into some sort of monster hunted down by all.

He waited to see if the open window would help get rid of the gas. He tried to think what might be directly below them, in case he decided he needed to punch a small hole in the floor, to let the gas drop down out of the room if the window didn't do its job soon.

Jade Hood opened the window whilst his friend held... well nothing - at least that Jade Hood could see!

The gas swirled and wafted away through the gap under the window, but not at such a rate that might cause those outside in the grounds - still oblivious and enjoying their garden party - to wonder if there was a fire breaking out. Indeed, the commotion in the corridor seemed to have abated, with the servants having found no fire and only traces of the smoke. They might - eventually - notice one of their number missing but the heroes figured they'd be gone from this place by then.

Stone Fist felt the form struggling under his grasp, and noted that whilst strong, the shape and build suggested he'd snagged a female...

Finally, after a couple of minutes had passed, the smoke had abated enough for the pair to risk breathing out. Jade Hood had been struggling to hold his breath much longer, whilst Stone Fist had had no trouble at all, and indeed, felt he could have held it for longer - minutes at least.

There were no ill effects from the gas this time round, thankfully.

"Why would we release our hostage for our friends," Stone Fist asked quietly. "They get hurt, you get hurt. They die, you die. Seems pretty simple to me."

He hoped the woman wouldn't know he was bluffing as he was raised to never strike a woman.

"Who are you and why are you here," he continued.

At first Jade Hood was ready to snort at that response. How could this girl, who allowed herself to be caught so easily trouble them, let alone their friends. But then his mind raced through the fact that she even knew enough about them that she knew of their friends. Hardly anyone save the thugs who'd attacked them previously knew about them. This was serious, after all.

"What can you do, since you have not even been able to evade capture! Sure you have a little information, but what good will it do you if you can't even alert whatever friends you have!"

Jade Hood played it cool, no point in showing all their cards at once, nor that it disturbed him that she knew about their friends, let alone where they were.

"I will not try to escape. The gas was... supposed to knock you out. Note, you, and not your friend." she sighed. It was strange, unnerving even, for Jade Hood to hear a voice from thin air.

"The chemicals I used were assumed to be the correct dosage and type needed to overcome your superhuman physiology. It seems as we were not only incorrect, but that your body has somehow adapted and evolved. You are exactly the specimen our studies reveal we need, but we still do not know how you have gained the superhuman abilities you have without side effects."

"My name is Soo Li Yin, a Doctor. I come from the same time as the man you know as Doctor Heinz Wulfgang. I represent another scientific organisation in that time that has a better way of dealing with our problems."

"Understand, I can see you even while you are invisible so don't try any tricks," he says as he lets her go. "Now why don't you tell us a bit about this future of yours and why all you folks seem to want to come back to our time period?"

Jade Hood looked on impassively, wanting to give nothing away in his visage. Although the technology looked to be the same as the Doctor, the idea that rival groups were popping back to them, just as they please, with potentially rival goals was alarming to say the least. Alert to any funny behaviour, he covered the window stealing glances out the guests, back to Stone Fist and toward the door.

He knew the good 'doctor' might yet have another trick or two up her sleeve as he listened in.

"In my time Aliens have conquered the Earth. Those scientists free and able got together from every underground cell in every country to pool their limited resources and come up with a plan to save mankind. Alas, mankinds failing is that, even in the face of extinction, they cannot agree on how to save themselves. The Time machine was copied and modified by various factions, all intent on forging their own path. Some disagreed with the notion of time travel entirely, and sided with the Aliens to stop them. The faction that sent your scientist back believed that the Nazis in this time era stood the best chance of preparing mankind by their so called 'Master Race' aspirations. Our records were, I believe, incomplete. On arrival in this time the faction I represent found the Nazis to be almost as bad as the Aliens in our own time. Even our fragmented historical records show that the Nazis are responsible for..."

She stopped, then glanced at Jade Hood then Stone Fist. "That is yet to pass. Suffice to say that siding with the Nazis is not the best course of action, we believe. Having tracked down a certain 'Baron Bloot' and learned of his apparent demise at your hands, we tracked you, invisibly and remotely, with what technology we were able to recreate given the limited resources we had. We believe one, or both of you have the only known working superhuman gene - thus far. Having followed you here I am confused now. More factions are active in this area."

She saw the confusion on the faces of the pair. "Think of the various factions as having their own agenda. My own wants to take the superhuman gene and use it to free the Earth in the future. Others have abandoned the future, and wish to live here in the 1930s, as Kings, Rulers, Despots, Tyrants. The Time Machine is a one way trip - I cannot go back to my own time - but what I do in the now can be discovered and recreated - I hope - in the future. Ultimately I will never know if I was successful, and now I am your prisoner."

"What is concerning me is this place you have come to. I cannot be sure, but having overheard some of the conversations, what these people are toying with is not the occult, nor some sinister being long hidden from humankind. I believe they are referring to the Aliens, from the future."

"Here, in this time."

She shook her head. "You" she said, speaking to Stone Fist "have the metahuman gene. I need a sample of your blood, and detailed scans of your body and brain, information that I shall seal in a ... time capsule... to be opened in the far future, hopefully. Name your price." she offered, hopeful that there may yet be some way to accomplish her mission.

Without much in the way of historical data to go off save that a number of factions thought this man Adolf Hitler and his dreams of a Master Race were to be interpreted as leading mankind into an enlightened age with mankind striving for perfection, the common consensus was that the 1930s were the ideal time to influence events and change the path of world history. A time before..."

She sighed again. "Suffice to say, the world will be a different place in a few years time, and what happens will shape the direction of mankinds development for decades, centuries even, and it all stems from around this time. I cannot reveal too much because it might change the way things occur."

She sagged against the wall, running a hand through her hair. "It is an impossible task, and yet I must try. Will you help me?"

Jade Hood looked incredulously at the woman, his simple and disciplined life, ill equipped to fully comprehend what she was saying. Looking at Stone Fist he wondered if his friend felt the same. They were to ordinary men have been witnesses in extraordinary events. But even this was beyond their full understanding.

Jade Hood hesitated to speak, aware that he wasn't sure to what degree he could fully trust this woman and mindful that at any point they might be discovered. "So far you have used deception and revealed the duplicity and confusion of your own people. How may we trust you, for with the very truth you have told us, you might well be using it to spring a trap on us or trick us into revealing that which could play into the hands of our enemies!"

Jade Hood crossed his arms as his face took on a hard but curious look. He scanned the beautiful woman's face, hoping to read in her look some subtle sign of deceit, if such a thing could be discerned with a glance.

The woman sighed and shrugged.

"We don't know who to trust, who you've made an agreement with, or what your intentions are. So far as we can tell the strange and unique selection of rare herbs and plants that created the genetic... soup, for want of a better word, that gave you your powers, is complete in only one, possibly two places. Your body..." she said to Stone Fist "and somebody called Lara Lamont, whom we cannot find. Anyone else has an impartial or imperfect mixture that produces side effects or undesirable results, like those in the nazi Baron Bloot. Were you working with him, or against him? We didn't know. And what are your ultimate goals? Our records, and experience in this time, shows that humanity works for material gain. We seek to gain nothing save the salvation of the human race."

She pondered the question. "With our limited technology and need to extract from you - whilst still living - the secrets of the formula, we have little to threaten you with, save you through your friends and families. The gas was an attempt to knock you out. It neither worked, nor had any meaningful effect."

"She turned to Jade Hood. You are an unknown. I feel, but it is a ..." she struggled for the word.

"Gut feeling? Is that the right phrase? You may be a pivotal point in all of this. You have no powers, but your skill and versatility combine with his strength and durability to form the perfect whole. A ying, and a yang, locked into one circle. One is capable without the other, but together you are formidable. With the various factions establishing resources and organisations in this era, we thought to 'steal a march' on the others and track you down. Our strategy was flawed. If you will not help us, that leaves assembling the 'genetic soup' into a whole again and analyzing it before using it to empower humanity and hoping future generations will mutate and become strong enough to resist the alien invasion."

Jade Hood and Stone Fist looked at one another. 'Empower humanity?' That sounded like a recipe for disaster! Armies of superhumans clashing on war torn, shattered battlefields of cities... whilst they might be powerful enough then to help the future, they would be fragmented and leaderless.

It seemed the future was doomed.

"Perhaps... an accord might be struck. If I can prove my worthiness to help you, you might then agree to provide the samples I need? I have extensive scientific knowledge and with the right resources, can help you in many ways. The Doctor with you might be able to do the same, but his motives and loyalty should be suspected. If you do not wish to align yourselves to my faction, I request you let me go, to begin anew the quest to gather all the elements of the 'soup' together."
