Anyman (16HP, Htk 26/48, Htc 60 1 Dark Power XP)

Guillotine (on V-Ship)
Boadicea (on V-Ship)
Spartan (on V-Ship)
P'ertaria (on V-Ship)
Where:Space!
ooc: Darn! Would have been better off just bleeding all over the place and using those frames to attack. Oh well, live [hopefully] and learn.
"My turn," Anyman says, letting loose with a barrage of blows.
Punching away, no parries.

OOC two parries, first on the most damaging blow: 1d20+2-1=12 parries with 4 accuracy + 25 from strength, damaged avoided, 1d20+2-1=14 parries with 6 accuracy +25 from strength damage avoided . He loses 13htk from his total of last round (updated above) and is bleeding from a multitude of wounds!
The aliens, spurred on by their wounded foe, attack again

Anyman swings for all he's worth, determined to take down the enemy before they tear him to shreds! The question was, did he have enough left in the tank?
OOC 1d20+2+6-17=1, 1d20+2+6-17=4, 1d20+2+6-17=2, 1d20+2+6-17=3. It doesn't look like much, but that's four hits. 13htc, 17htc, 14htc, 16htc after bonuses and dividers... Enough to ...
Anyman grabs the nearest alien by its blood red tendril, drags it close in and pounds his fist against its head and the wall! The wall dents and the unconscious alien collapses into a red smear down the wall!
He turns, rolls his neck and jabs! BANG! Red sprays from an Alien head! THUMP! Drives an uppercut into its midriff! KAPOW! Rams his fist downwards to drop the stunned Alien into a deep coma!
Breathing heavily, he looks about and sees the P'utinarians coming out of the room. They barely resemble any humanoid shape and have changed from grey to white! When they see the vile K'atinarians - throwbacks to a dark time that the peaceful P'utinarians had hoped were long gone - smeared all over the floor they collapse to the floor as wet grey puddles in relief!
Anyman sags against a wall, concentrating on closing the wounds, but fails as they open up every time. Breathing hard, he mops blood from his eyes and touches a finger to the earpiece as Boadicea squawks over the comms "...to any Vanguard! Repeat! Get out of there! That creature has power readings OFF THE CHART! We managed to configure the scanner to see what you are up against and... it's like you guys! GET OUT! You need to... P'ertaria? What's..."
There was a momentary pause, then P'ertaria spoke. "You can jettison the engine section into space! It will leave the shuttle stranded but better that than it getting onto your ship and getting down to Earth where all the prisoners are! Imagine hundreds of those K'atinarians running around, slaying indiscriminately! You must..."
Boadicea got back on the line "To any who can hear me - Frostbot has a plan to divert the missile but... its planning to sacrifice itself!"
OOC fight on this level is over. Frosty and Lionheart to act, then the bad thing gets to use its remaining (of 6) frames. And that, gentlemen, will hurt! Oh, and despite Lionheart having amazing dodging prowess, I'd recommend he parries the damage and uses hero points (more than 1 if needed). He can do the same with dodging but a roll of that magnitude (31 accuracy) is hard to match on 1d6+10 (dodge mod) - WC (4) of attacker! It would burn more hero points doing that, whereas normally a dodge can avoid damage completely, whilst a parry only blocks some of it. Your choice Dave (E) and Frosty (2fr)/Lionheart (5fr) to act mate. Oh, and the Dark Power is really a lot easier to use for you guys than it was before, so don't be scared of doing it! Admittedly, if it all goes wrong you'll be making new characters for those caught in the *kaboom*, but hey, what's life without a little risk

OOC: Right can I say up front, for the record and to be quiet sure, Paul PLEASE do all my rolling for me from now on. I don't mind dictating actions but you can do the rolling. Ok amended as this was almost crossed posted.
Saladin, knew what it was to come into touch with the creatures fearsome grip, so instead made sure he was nowhere near the thing as he flung the doors he'd brought with him at the creature.
OOC: I'm using them as improvised projections for now, thinking that Ego attack on a creature like this isn't going to be worth much. I know I could buff it with an hero points - ha ha, the villain has access to the heroes, hero points, but I'd rather wait and see what happens. I'm only down here to try and stop the ship exploding.
Meanwhile Frostbite shot through the now exposed gap and pulled up short as he saw Saladin hurl the doors at the creature. Without a doubt, he didn't need his senses to tell him this was something worse than they'd faced before. But he also knew he was going to need help to make sure he stopped this thing before it got to do any further harm.
Holding out his arms Frostbite made ready to fire off his energy attack, realising as he did that he'd made himself potentially vulnerable from the creature's attacks as he returned to a tangible state.
OOC: Ok so Saladin after throwing his weapons will try and allow Frostbite's arrival to give him time to stop the creature continuing to eat into the reactor casing. If need be he will use his Telekinesis to 'scoop' up the thing and transport it somewhere else where it can do less harm.
Frostbite will use his remaining two frames to fire his energy attack at the creature. He will parry if possible with fist blows, but realises that he will have to use the dark power if he wants to defeat this foe and so I am thinking this is a relatively safe place to use the dark power blast! We'll we shall see, but that is my plan after parrying, if that proves futile at this point then I will have to call on the dark power sooner, as long as I can bolster things with Hero points to guarantee things, then that is fine. I'd using a healing surge but its pointless here as I've actually lost not HTC, in what must be a first for ages ;-).
Saladin will parry using hero point as necessary to stay ahead of the damage, assuming the creature doesn't like what he is doing and goes for him.
On the whole rules thing, I single updated PDF would be great as its confusing what has been ditched and what hasn't like the Healing Surge, totally forgot about that rule.
PS whilst we've been talking I know the missile is heading for the ships, I did mention that Spartan should separate the ships to give two targets instead of one. Although I am not sure what Frostbot is thinking of doing. Although I can guess its something to do with selfless sacrifice.

OOC Saladin has 5 frames, Frosty has four and needs 2 to fly to the engine room and into the fight. Anyman has 4 frames and may need to respond to two attacks. Over to y'all.

ooc: Yeah, I thought the ships were going to separate too which is why Putty told the others to go back to the V-Ship.
So those on the V-Ship could get the enemy ships to spread out and try to take them on one by one while we did the rescue mission on the shuttle.

Frostbite (12HP, Htk 26/48, Htc 60, 1 Dark Power XP Energy 0/15 round 4/5 into 5/5)
Anyman (16HP, Htk 26/48, Htc 60 1 Dark Power XP)
Saladin (Lionheart) (17HP, Htk 48/65, Htc 78 PSI 12/22 round 4/5 into 5/5)
Guillotine (on V-Ship)
Boadicea (on V-Ship)
Spartan (on V-Ship)
P'ertaria (on V-Ship)
Where:Space!
Spartan, on the bridge of the V-Ship, barked "Prepare the ship for separation! We should... oh, to hell with it."
He ran over to a large red button on a console and slammed his hand down on it!
=========
(Whilst the fight with Anyman and the two K'atinarians has just finished, so inbetween rounds and whilst Saladin faces off against the thing that is just about to kill him...)
There is a loud BANG! and blast doors slam down inside the P'utinarian ship as the temperature drops violently and there is a rush of air! Anyone stood in the airlock section would have seen the V-Ship tumble backwards steadily away from the P'utinarian vessel! On the bridge level, the terrified P'utinarians scream in fear as they realised they are trapped on here with their worst nightmare!
=========
Saladin saw the tendril coming towards his chest, about to splatter a hole through it and end his life!
So fast! He knew even his incredible speed would be of little use! He fell backwards, throwing his arms out and trying to push the thing to the side!
OOC Missed the 'parry' until the end of your post Dave, thought you'd forgotten that Saladin was about to 'buy the farm'! Ok, rolls... 1d20+3-4-7=2. Not a great roll (10) but burning a hero point nets 1d20=19. Ah, now we're talking! Saladin parries with Martial arts grade 2, making things MUCH easier. 21 Accuracy, matched by 15 points (his max htk from MA2) plus 26 points from Strength equals 62 points. His force shield stops 19 points meaning 81 points in total are stopped. He still takes 17htk!
Saladin catches the tendril in his hands, only to see it extend a foot longer and bite him on the shoulder, smashing through his force field!
"Argggh!" he cries, staggering back a step or two!
OOC with regards the PDF I need to add the Dark power rules and reorganise it but all the combat rules are in there. At some point I will switch to 2D10 and doubles will explode if no one has objections but it will need tweaking elsewhere, target numbers for one.
Bleeding from a wound, Saladin scooped up a fallen door (OOC 1 frame) and tossed it at his foe (OOC 1 frame)
OOC 1d20+3+6-17=-3. Roll of 5, no good!
The door sails past the creature who barely moves to the side, hearing it clatter against a wall behind him! "You are fast, and strong, little man. But I can feel your feaaaar! It feeds me! Makes me STRONGER!" spat the villain!
There is a crack as the thick glasslike coating of the core starts to be eaten through by the creatures 'spore', but it will take longer to pierce to allow a breach. (OOC Just then...)
The ships separate, tilting the deck slightly to one side and finally getting the notice of the creature!
"What are you...?" it spluttered, then cursed in an alien tongue. "No matter! I will use this vessel!"
Saladin didn't answer. He picked up the other door (OOC 1 frame lift, 1 to throw, that's his five done) and tossed it at the creature!
OOC 1d20+3+6-17=5 hit, +8htk from improv weapon (5 matching accuracy, +3 from weapon modifier) +26 (strength) divided by creatures dividers (Htk /5, Htc /7 cannot dodge) equals 7 htk
The edge of the door deflects from the creatures chin, bouncing to the side! It grins, about to say something, until Frostbite, entering through the doorway, opens fire!
OOC Normal blast, 5 energy (x5 multiplier). No mention of hero points so I assume you are using them for defence (you'll need them!) 1d20+3+6-17=3. Roll 11, not great but a hit. Accuracy of 3, x5 for 15damage split 8htk, 7htc. Reduced by dividers (Htk /3 Htc /5) to 2htk and 1htc! HOWEVER the creature seems vulnerable to cold. Divider reducers are doubled so Htk /1 Htc /3 . Frosty does 8htk, 2htc. Every little helps!
The creature is laughing until Frostbite blasts it! It's not a particularly accurate shot, but powerful enough to get its attention as it's liquid like form crystallizes where the blast hits and turns mushy! "I see you Prince! I SEE you! Still hiding behind your puny mortal form? I will kill it quick so that you need not suffer the ignominy of being bested by your peer!". Then it lashes out!
OOC The creature attacks! Three on Saladin two on Frostbite! 1d20+4+6-17=-6 CRITICAL MISS, 1d20+4+6-17=13 CRITICAL HIT - CANCELLED OUT BY PREVIOUS CRIT MISS!, 1d20+4+6-17=3 HIT, 1d20+4+6-17=13 CRITICAL HIT, 1d20+4+6-17=-6 CRITICAL MISS, CREATURE HAS 5 FRAMES NEXT ROUND. Ok, the hit on Saladin (he was lucky, nearly took another fatal hit!) does 6htk + 55 (strength) for 61htk. Response? (Dodging should avoid that completely, but takes up future frame. Your choice.) The Critical hit on Frostbite scores another 1d20=16 points. 29 Accuracy, +12htk + 55 strength and reduces dividers by 2. 96htk divided by 2 means 48htk! Response? (That kills him in one hit too! Criticals are proving lethal - if only to the Vanguard. Hey, I'm not rolling the dice, and there's a fair share of bad (1s) as well as good )
To summarise all that babble:
Saladin takes 61htk. Response?
Frostbite takes 48htk. Response?
The creature loses a frame (down to 5) next round.
Initiative is 1d10=8 Heroes, 1d10=2 bad guys. I've noticed the dice roller gives odd results. First of all the heroes generally lose initiative, then if they win it's only by one point *head scratch* and that's after half a dozen rolls so we can keep combat flowing. Might revert to using conventional dice. Anyway. 3 frames, Saladin, Anyman, Frostbite. Over to you. Anyman will need 3 frames to get to the engine room.
Frostbite (12HP, Htk 26/48, Htc 60, 1 Dark Power XP Energy 0/15 round 4/5 into 5/5)

Re: World War II - The Vanguard Issue #4 - The Battle Of Britain!
OOC as a reminder...
Hero Points – These are awarded for acting heroically – whether you succeed or fail, but more points are awarded for success! You can use a Hero point in the following ways. Unless stated you can’t spend more than 1 Hero Point at a time:
1) Having made an attack or parry, you can boost it by spending 1 hero point to roll an additional D20, as if you’d rolled 20 on your attack roll, and adding it to your attack/parry total. A hero point will boost a dodge roll by 1D6 should the character need it, too.
2) Having taken a hit, a player can roll 1D20 as ‘last ditch defence’ for 1 hero point and reduce damage taken from the last hit with it, coming off HTK first and any remainder off HTC. As usual, rolling 20 allows you to roll another D20, adding to the total. Last ditch defence could be a stroke of luck, roll with the blow or even just gritting teeth and taking it on the chin.
3) The character can gain some clue, insight or guidance from the GM. The player can ask three questions of the GM which must be answered YES or NO. They should be closed questions (i.e. requiring a YES or NO answer) as no more detail will be given.
4) Hospitalised – if your character is killed outright, they can expend all of their remaining Hero Points and be left on 1 HTK, comatose, but alive. They remain in that state long enough to be rescued, even in deep space, underwater etc. Comics are full of characters coming back from the dead, but it’s easier to rationalise if they don’t die in the first place! Needless to say the character will take a while to recover.
5) Save someone else’s life – using a hero point to save another is heroic. It can come in many forms including a cable swinging by for a falling person to catch hold of, stopping the bleeding long enough for the paramedics to take over, or some other improbable means, heck, even divine intervention isn’t unknown in the comic books!
6) Push yourself beyond your limits. You can increase a power by a grade by rolling 1D20 per hero point you spend (up to however many you want) and rolling over 20. For every 5 points or part thereof over 20, the upgrade lasts 1 use (taken the characters next frame or action. If not used immediately it can’t be ‘banked’ for later use. Use it or lose it.). For example if a character rolls 37, that’s a boost of 1 grade for 4 uses, taken in the characters next frames.
All in the house rules doc. If I get chance I'll play about with it tonight to make it more legible and clean the formatting up (put it in columns instead of foot high letters as appear on my screen...)

OOC: Just to say that the reason I'd prefer you to roll is because I cannot prove I've rolled what I've rolled on dice here, so that is why I used Invisible Castle, but the results, well they're legendary for all the wrong reasons. So if you want to go and just roll your side of the screen, well I won't complain. You're the DM.
Right as for Combat responses, Saladin will indeed dodge using hero points where necessary, since this is going to hurt otherwise, and use the remainder of his frames to try and eject the engine room from the ship. If we can trap the creature here when the thing blows up, all the better. Even if it survives it might at least be a little weaker.
Frostbite will likewise parry, since he can't dodge, but I'll use the Dark power energy attack and burn hero points to do it. Unless you can think of another way to do this, because this thing is so powerful, I'm about to get my butt handed to me.
I'm rubbish at maths so I don't know what I'd need to deflect it away. Or alternatively depending on what the cost is, I get my energy levels back and fire them off in a nova burst of Frost Fire, if I can freeze it in place, long enough for us to get out, and the engine core to be ejected...
Anyway I'll let you handle the mechanics.

OOC: Ok the plan hasnt changed, kill the immediate bug threat, melt part of the car to suit up while jock stabilizes Mary with a little antifreeze (to far?) and finally plasma blast whats left of the car as jock throws it into the nests.
IC: TICK TICK TIICCCCKKKKK was the droning noise from overhead as the bugs regrouped for round 2
(hero points to hit) sentinel and anchor stood back to back battering the swarm in attempt to protect the bearly conscious mary

"Quick! Give me the capabilities of this ship," Anyman orders the P'utarnarians. "I'm going to see if we can defeat this monster from here! Can you get in touch with the others of your kind down below and tell them to flee to this part of the ship? I want to try to separate the part of the ship it is in and shoot it at another target!"
ooc: Okay, trying a brainstorm here. Wanna know if we can detach the area the monster is in, after getting the P'utanarians to safety or as many of them as possible. I know enough science to know for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. So I'm thinking we forceably shoot the engine core that the creature is in and use it as our own torpedo.
My targets, in order of preference, are:
1 The oncoming missle
2 One of the ships firing at us and chasing us
3 The ship Silver Sentinel is on - maybe just maybe having this creature coming at it will cause it to forget our teammates as it fights for survival.
Will use the mental link to let the others know what I'm going to do, if I can do it, and have them get the others to safety and possibliy themselvs. Or do the old "go intangible and phase through to space and get back aboard at the very last moment" routine.

Frostbite desperately tried to fend off the scything claw attack of the dreadful creature they faced!
OOC Frostys target number is actually 11 to parry a WC4 attack, so I'll assume a Hero Point will be used (seeing as though he's dead if he fails the parry). Invisible Castle not responding (?) so rolled 11 and (hero point) 14. Add strength (this is htk damage which Frosty isn't able to add to) +17 means 31htk parried. He takes 17htk. I will also assume he tries to stop some of that with a last ditch defence (another HP). 13 rolled for that. He takes 4htk. And burnt through hero points...
Having had enough, Frostbite calls forth the Dark Power from within!
"Yes... YES! About time!" cackled the creature they faced. It danced about excitedly, clapping its hands and whooping. "About time! Show me what you got! C'mon Prince, SHOW ME WHAT YOU GOT!" it raged!
OOC The Dark power mechanic requires you specify how many points you want to try for. Without wanting to delay things I'll assume you go for 10 points, vs Frostys ego of 12. Hero point at the ready... 17 for Frosty... 15 for the Dark power. Easy! Cleared it by, uh, 4 points. Still, he has 10D10 Dark power points to assign to powers and abilities as he sees fit.
Here's those mechanics again should you need them...
10d10=57 (working now? No internal server 500 error anyway, whatever that means) including one 10 which adds 1d10=1. Whoot. 58 Dark power points. You'll need to take a look at the mechanics and decide how you want it broken down (dividers, accuracy, damage etc). If I were you I'd consider some kind of defensive power, even higher vigour, which, despite being temporary, will soak up some damage. One more critical and you may find that Hero Points aren't enough to save Frosty!
Saladin saw the blow heading towards him and stepped aside, wondering just how on Earth they would defeat this monstrosity! He was allied with two of the most powerful beings in existence - who used their powers reluctantly, at best - but they were ranged against an opponent that was a stone cold deadly killer! the way it had minced him up so far... he waited to the last moment, then danced aside! The blow smashed into the wall, buckling metal like paper!
OOC Dodge is 1D6+10-4, roll of 3, total 9. No problemo. Criticals are another matter, but he dodges that hit without a problem.
Thankfully the monster had missed this time, and Saladin looked about. Seeing what he needed, he sped over to the far side of the room to smash a glass panel and pull a handle!
All of a sudden a klaxon blared out, yellow lights flashing, and blast doors dropped to seal the entrance/exit of the room!
An alien voice rang out, and the creature turned. "What have you done? Hahahahahaha! You've sealed your doom, fools! You're stuck in here with me!"
Saladin cursed! He'd succeeded in sealing the room off to prepare the section for separation, but that could only be done at the bridge! Meanwhile they were now stuck in the room with this creature!
OOC Frosty to assign Dark Power points then the bad guy to get stuck in. We may see a character death this round! That's not something I want or look forward to, but you are genuinely facing a game changing foe, albeit one who barely comprehends the depth and breadth of power it wields! If it were a Dr Doom level genius I suspect you guys would already be history (unless you used your Dark Power from the off, which evens things up nicely).

"However the failsafe in the engine section needs to be activated first, then you need to get your people out before ... oh. Look!" said the alien, and it moved closer to the panel. "There's a malfunction in the separation circuit! The only way to separate the section is to activate it from here and manually release it down there! Whoever releases the section will be trapped in there though!"
"I'm not going down there!" remarked another Alien. "That thing will change me into..." it looked at one of the red smears on the floor. The P'utinarian looked reluctantly at the others of its kind. They weren't afraid of death, but being turned into a K'atinarian, and being forced to prey on their own kind... well, that was a fate worse than death!
In response to getting in touch with the others, the Aliens pressed another button on a console. Nothing appeared to happen, but the alien inside Anyman (Putty) remarked "They have activated a hypersonic alarm which the hearing of humans cannot hear. It's loud enough for me though. It's saying that all personnel are to report to the bridge for immediate evacuation."
Anyman scoured the panel. "Quick! Get this thing turned, somehow! We want to fire the engine section at a target... that missile or those oncoming ships or... what's that?"
A P'utinarian leaned over, hand splitting into dozens of tendrils to activate a screen.
OOC That little white thing in the corner is an elephant, for size comparison. It's about twice as big as the V-Ship in other words. Need to dig out a pic of the V-Ship. Always figured it was a flying saucer type thing, but I'm sure there are better/cooler shapes to use.
The P'utinarians looked at one another, then one ran it through the database. "It appears to match the basic configuration of a Qrii vessel, though our database is so out of date it matches no known pattern we know of. Scan indicates... three human lifeforms aboard and... the rest is simply... alive! That ship is sentient... and its heading in this direction!"
Just then a voice squawked over the earpiece Anyman wore "This is Spartan! Sensors have picked up the ship that Sentinel is aboard! It's huge! And it's heaidng this way! It changed course we believe and whatever it wants, it's decided that it's in this direction! It could be the moon, and all the Lunarium, the Nazi ships closing in, or it might consider that missile a threat or... it could be coming for us!"
A P'utinarian pointed at a panel, gobbledigook to Anyman but clear as day to the Aliens! "Someone has activated the manual containment for the engine section! We can jettison it at any time!"
OOC Timing may be critical here. Who do you want to fire the engine section at? You can fire it in the order of preference you stated or maybe change your target? Also Frosty and Lionheart are locked in there with the creature but as you well know, they have the intangibility option to call on. The missile is getting closer but has veered to intercept the V-Ship, now separated from the P'utinarian vessel. Meanwhile the Qrii are taking an interest in all that's going on, and seeing as they kidnapped Sentinel in the first place because of the power they sensed in him, it's a good bet they saw the power output on this ship (2 Vanguardians, 1 Dark power bad guy) and rubbed their mandibles together with glee, thinking to snag themselves even more prizes! Maybe someone mention to them 'be careful what you wish for...'

OOC: Character death - but this isn't D&D!!!. I still feel bad about Joseph Rigdon! Anyway thanks for the repeat of the rules, I downloaded the house rules and tucked that away after giving it a brief glance to make sure I was up to speed. But if I'm letting you do the dice rolls I not that worried about that, over much.
OK So whilst Saladin is thinking of how he can get himself out of the mess, he's suddenly in, I had intended to use the Dark Power Blast, but I can now see that if i get my usual successful rolls if this thing is still standing at the end of it, then it will be curtains for Joe and I don't want that. I might have gotten attached to Joseph Rigdon, and his loss was painful enough, I don't want to loose another character.
Ok SO I will first of all increase my vigour so that is 20 points (I'll let you roll, but I need to heal up and getting my HTK is faster than regenerating it) leaving me 38 points to spend on - well how do I regain my existing energy for a all out energy attack, since that is the only thing I can do with the points that are left. Alternatively I'd love to get back my Field Manipulation cold, but the worry there is I'd need the second grade to do significant damage. So lets go with energy attack. You've not specified what it would take to get my existing energy back a round early and then to be able to fire it all in one single or two single bursts, like John Storm Super Nova. My hope is that it will freeze Saladin, and I can then make him intangible hold my breath and fly to the P'utinarian ship whilst this part is ejected. I will know what is going on as Anyman has already said he'll use the mental link to keep me informed.
Then its just a question of pouring on the Hero points to try and make sure that I don't miss.

Frostbite called on the dark reserves within, knowing full well that what he was attempting felt like threading a needle whilst being battered in a thunder storm. He communicated his intentions to everyone and hoped that Saladin would pick up things whilst at the same time shielding his thoughts from the abomination in front of him.
Part of him recoiled because no matter how much he fought for control, what he saw in front of him, was the very thing they all feared becoming. Driven mad by the fight within, broken by their inability to control the very power they were given to wield. Frostbite fought for greater control, mentally showing the Dark Prince what he wanted to do, noting full well the creatures vulnerability to his cold attacks.
Meanwhile Saladin looked for a means of escape, seeing briefly the strange design and the shaking thinking of his companion, Saladin did really wonder if this mad idea, was all that could happen. Although he could release that part of him that he fought for control over, Richard King, Lionheart, neither could get far without the other. So he waited, seeking to pit his skills against the creature, whilst he also waited for a chance to escape.
Bending his mighty mind he sought to break through the creatures defences, feeling its towering intellect nonetheless he strove to blind its mind with a powerful Psi attack.
OOC:
OK So Frostbite will fire his energy at the creature, all he can and at the same time Saladin will use hero point to launch a successful Psi attack on the thing, pouring in 5x points as initiative allows.
If Frostbite is successful in freezing him, however stupid that plan might be he will keep a hero point with him to make sure that if nothing else he remains at 1 htk and above the threshold of death. Equally I think that will be the standing condition for Frostbite - depending on if what is happening is survivable or not.
But in terms of what happens next, I was thinking of going for the dark power blast, so if this doesn't work then I might go for keeping the Vigour whilst using the Dark Power Blast. Not sure, I guess it depends on what happens next.

Re: World War II - The Vanguard Issue #4 - The Battle Of Britain!
Silver Sentinel (HP12, Htk 88/88 Htc 42/110 NO ARMOUR!)
+Anchor (Htc 25/88)
+Fastback (hungry!)
Where: Qrii Scout Ship in Orbit
What: In a holding cell, being 'probed' by... the ship itself!
Sentinel ignored the pain and pounded away with fists used to being encased in steel!
OOC I think you wanted to use hero points to mop this lot up? You have enough to burn so I will assume you want to boost the lower two rolls of this: 1d20+2+6-17=10 Hit, +10htc + 15 = 35/2 =17htc , 1d20+2+6-17=8 BOOSTED BY HP by 15 to 23, +12 +15 = 50 /2 =25htc Qrii Down, 1d20+2+6-17=5 boosted by HP by 11 to 16, +12, +15 = 43/2 =22htc
Sentinel dug deep, slamming fist after fist home! He slammed one Qrii against the wall then delivered a flurry of blows that saw it crash through the resin and flop into the egg pit beyond, smashing hundreds of eggs and eliciting a great SCREAM! from the ship and all the creatures on it! Taking advantage of the shock he whirled and smacked another Qrii across the corridor. He faced off against one wounded Qrii (OC one hit to finish) and one unwounded one.
Anchor grinned at his leader and turned his own attentions to his foes.
OOC 1d20+2+6-17=10 hit +10 +35 = 55/2 = 27htc, 1d20+2+6-17=9 +9 +35 = 53/2 = 26htc, 1d20+2+6-17=0 Miss
Sending first one, then another flying with thunderous blows the big man saw the resin around his feet crack as his one ton weight shifted with every punch! "Makes me wanna go on a diet, crackin' th' floor normally, but ah'll make an exception for these beasties!"
The Qrii gathered themselves. One picked itself up and fluttered over to Silver Sentinel whereas the other attacked him where it stood in front of him...
OOC 1d20+1+6-17=-2, 1d20+1+6-17=-4, 1d20+1+6-17=-6 all three attacks missed from the healthy Qrii. The other uses a frame to move and attacks twice 1d20+1+6-17=4 hit +4 +5 = 13htc, 1d20+1+6-17=6 +6 +5 = 17htc. That's 30htc total which would drop Sentinel from 72/110 to 42/110, still operable but looking a bit dog eared round the edges Response?
Anchor yelled "There's more on 'em comin' from th' egg pit! They'll just wear us down! We need to go!" but the problem was, the Qrii were in the way!
OOC Anchor is attacked by three Qrii, one of which is healthy, the other two use a frame to fly back. That's 7 attacks in total. 1d20+1+6-17=-5 miss, 1d20+1+6-17=1 hit for 7htc, 1d20+1+6-17=8 hit for 21htc, 1d20+1+6-17=-9 CRITICAL MISS lose next frame, 1d20+1+6-17=7 Missed thanks to critical, 1d20+1+6-17=-2 Miss, 1d20+1+6-17=-7 Miss. That could've gone worse! Anchor takes 28htc and is reduced to 25/88. This will be tight!
The Qrii in the egg room were taking care to avoid smashing any more eggs, whilst some simply wrung their hands at the devastation even going so far as to turn their wrath on the fallen Qrii that had done the damage, tearing it to shreds with their mandibles!
Sentinel ground his teeth. In moments more would arrive, and then he'd be dragged down! He glanced at Mary, who was groaning on the floor. Her speed would have been useful indeed, perhaps as she scooped eggs up and tossed them around, spun on the spot and created an 'egg whirlwind' or just to run interference and work as a distraction! he then considered - she wasn't daft - she'd have squirrelled a snack away in the car! Problem was, getting to the car!
Sentinel swung again.
OOC 1d20+2+6-17=3 hit for 12htc, enough to take a Qrii out (staggered)
He faced off against just one opponent now, but more would turn up soon!
Anchor swung again...
OOC 1d20+1+6-17=6 hit for 23htc. Qrii out!
The big man faced off against two opponents (one wounded) whilst Sentinel had one. After that the path to the docking bay lay open!
OOC initiative 1d10=10 Heroes, 1d10=1 bad guys, you get 4 frames. You need to take these guys down this round or you'll have another dozen Qrii on you!

Re: World War II - The Vanguard Issue #4 - The Battle Of Britain!
Sentinel paused for a moment to concentrate, reaching out with his mind
"THANK GOD MY FRIEND, WE SEEM TO BE IN RATHER A PICKLE, BY ALL MEANS FIRE AWAY"
Jock too paused just for a second in shock un seeing his ally just stand there in mid fight but then continued to the task at hand
Sentinel then turned his focus back to the remaining bug attempting to swat it out of the sky with his bloody fist which missed his armour terribly.
OCC: If I beat it then I'll assist Jock
IC: "The cavalry is coming Anchor, when it happens and you'll know when grab Mary and get her to the car I'll be right behind you"
OOC: Hopefully the bombardment will throw the bugs off or a few seconds giving us time to get to the vehicle

OOC Regaining your energy a round quicker is slightly beyond the remit of the Dark Power but you can easily gain more Energy points (10 per grade) by spending 15 Dark power points to up your Energy Attack. It works out as being less powerful because the Dark power doesn't roll damage - it assumes 6 per die, whereas your *legendary* dice rolls are lucky to inflict even half of that, unfortunately. Right, 20 Dark Power points on Vigour, gives 12 extra Vigour points, 5htc per die and 6htk per die giving the boost (60/72) for four frames to your health stats. Any damage you take comes off those first. 38 points for a dark power blast has me figuring on this split: 6 dice of Htk at 2/die (12 cost), 2 dice of Htk at 3/die (18 total cost), 10m range for 3 points (21 total cost) -3 Damage Dividers for 15 points (36 total cost) leaving 2 points over which can be used on a 1 for 1 basis to reduce any Htk damage ('every little helps', as some corporate machine says...). Whether it'll be enough to weather the storm of attacks heading Frostys way... The Dark Power blast is a one shot deal but inflicts 6 per die, so 48htk plus accuracy of attack, and those dividers are especially effective because you can make the Dark power a cold blast and this creature is vulnerable to cold (double dividers).
Frostbite summoned the Dark Power from within, grinning maniacally as his limbs filled with energy! Why deny himself this? He was power incarnate! Still, the foe he faced was his equal... thanks to his weak mortal constraints! He knew that giving into the Dark Power would grant the might he needed to simply sweep his enemies aside! He could smash them into...
Joe blinked, looking about. He'd almost lost himself in the beast! Just then he saw the K'Atinarian send razor sharp tendrils at him!
OOC Three attacks on Frosty, three on Lionheart. Here we go. 1d20+4+6-17=4 hit Frosty for 32htk after dividers, 1d20+4+6-17=-3 Miss, 1d20+4+6-17=7 hit Frosty for 39htk after dividers, 1d20+4+6-17=-3 Miss, 1d20+4+6-17=7 hit Saladin for 69htk, 1d20+4+6-17=6 hit Saladin for 67htk. I assume Saladin will use two frames to dodge coming up with 1d6+6=12 dodged (no need to roll extra exploding D6), 1d6+6=8 Dodged. If Frostbite takes the two hits off his new found vigour it will leave 1 point of extra vigour, 2 Dark power points left over and a Dark power blast (taking 1 action to use so next round). Saladin has no more frames to act (used 3, dodged with 2) and Frostbite has a single frame to use this round then initiative. You might want to use the frame to parry and save some of that Htk for next round, but I can foresee having to call on the Dark Power several more times if you want to take this guy down plus you get your normal energy back. Over to you. Oh, and bear in mind - the more you use the Dark power, the better the character will be at it. At grade 2 Dark power, you get double the amount of points to use or they last for two rounds (your choice) so it's worth taking the risk and using it as much as you can.

Re: World War II - The Vanguard Issue #4 - The Battle Of Britain!
Frostbite
+Saladin
Frostbite prepares his energy blast, but also hears...
"I'm going to separate the engine room," Anyman sends out mentally to everyone, "You two need to get out of there in the next few seconds. I have a choice to firing it off at the missle heading for the V-Ship or the huge alien ship that is rapidly approaching with Silver Sentinel aboard. And I do mean HUGE!!! Silver Sentinel? Do you want me to fire at your ship? On board is a monster that requires us to use our Dark Powers just to stay alive! Can you and your crew get to this shuttle the ship you are on is approaching? If not, I will fire at the missle heading for the V-Ship." in his mind! Saladin doesn't hear the direct mind to mind communication but does hear it 'echo' inside Frostbites head and gets the gist - Anyman will jettison this entire section of the ship in the next few seconds!
OOC Frosty has 1 frame then 1d10=6 Heroes, 1d10=1 Bad guy initiative gives you 3 frames to act, plus you have your Dark power blast to use (takes 1 action, which you can spread over 1 frame from last round and 1 from this).

Silver Sentinel (HP12, Htk 88/88 Htc 42/110 NO ARMOUR!)
+Anchor (Htc 25/88)
+Fastback (hungry!)
Where: Qrii Scout Ship in Orbit
What: Battling their way back to the docking bay where Sentinel can change the car into armour!
Sentinel ignored the pain and pounded away with fists used to being encased in steel!
Battered and getting desperate, the two heroes continued to club away at their foes!
OOC Sentinel attacks... 1d20+2+6-17=11 CRITICAL HIT!, 1d20+2+6-17=9 Hit for 33/2 = 17htc. The Crit adds another 1d20=8 points of accuracy. That blow does 23htc after dividers.
With two mighty blows Sentinel sends his final opponent flying! It clatters against a wall and slides down, but the young hero doesn't rest on his laurels, lamping another alien facing off against Anchor!
OOC 1d20+2+6-17=11 CRITICAL HIT! plus 1d20=18 means 28htc after dividers. Sentinel takes down the wounded Qrii facing Anchor leaving him with one left. Sentinel has 1 frame remaining.
Anchor grins "Och laddie, ye're a star in th' makin! Ye'll be division champion afore long!" before smacking out with his own ham sized fists at his final foe!
OOC 1d20+1+6-17=1 hit for 18htc, 1d20+1+6-17=9 hit for 26htc
With two solid blows Anchor sends his final foe flying, scoops Fastback up, then starts running for the docking bay, calling over his shoulder "Last one there's bug food!"
Silver Sentinel grinned, looked at the horde crawling from the egg pit, then set off at a run!
OOC Combat over for now - what happens next depends on when that engine section is jettisoned from the ship Anyman, Saladin and Frostbite are on.

Frostbite
+Saladin
OOC: Ok sorry I'm up in the morning and your up at night so loads goes on by the time I'm back up. Anyway so I will parry the incoming attack and have to endure the second lot of damage and then use the what I can to fire off the Dark Power Blast. Paul I don't mind you assuming some of this stuff. If I've said something upfront (I do try to anticipate) fine, but otherwise assume I'm dodging, parrying or whatever especially against an enemy that I cannot hope to stand firm against ;-). I say this because I am desperate to see what happens next and don't want to slow things down just to confirm that I will parry and fire etc.
Thanks for the heads up re the dark power, I do feel that the desperate need and the fact that there are no civilian soft targets to get hurt up here means Frostbite has greater impunity to use the power and hopefully develop a better symbiotic relationship without falling foul of its darker impulses.
ANyway Saladin will dodge, as you correctly surmise (feel free to do the same with Frostbite, if its totally out of wake I'll say so. But lets crack on) and Frostbite will parry where he can.
======
Despite being filled with the energy, which was also both a relief and a moment of despair. Frostbite realised how dependent he was becoming on this relationship, as he sought to withstand the incoming blows. Although not entirely successfully, his new found health stood him in good stead as he sought to fend the creature off, before blasting back at it.
Hearing Anyman's voice as his own sought to resist the dark powers pull, he simply sent back one thought to Anyman. "Do it"
All around clamps began to resound will as the lower portion of the craft began to vibrate with the order being executed from the control panel.
Saladin looked on, unafraid but still weary. The creature was no longer his problem but what was, was how he would manage to escape out of what was fast becoming a death trap. He smiled to himself, the shocks, the thrill of battle, this is where he belonged and he revealed in it.

Re: World War II - The Vanguard Issue #4 - The Battle Of Britain!
OOC Just so I get things straight:
1) Anyman has been given the ok to release the engine section of the ship
2) Frostbite and Saladin are still aboard that part
3) So is the creature
4) It's aimed at the insectoid Qrii ship
5) Where Silver Sentinel, Anchor and Fastback are fighting for their lives currently
6) There will be a huge explosion when the two collide! *boom*
If you guys are ok with that I'll get on with it

Re: World War II - The Vanguard Issue #4 - The Battle Of Britain!
The Vanguard
Frostbite (10HP, Htk 22/48+43 (1fr), Htc 60+60 (1fr), 2 Dark Power XP Energy 15/15)
Anyman (16HP, Htk 26/48, Htc 60 1 Dark Power XP)
Saladin (Lionheart) (16HP, Htk 48/65, Htc 78 PSI 12/22 round 1/5)
Guillotine (on V-Ship)
Boadicea (on V-Ship)
Spartan (on V-Ship)
P'ertaria (on V-Ship)
Where:Space!
Frostbite tried to fend off another of the creatures' blows - the razor sharp scything tendrils were possessed of a strength unlike anything Frostbite had encountered before! It was a miracle he was still alive! A glance about showed that where the creature had missed, there were holes and gouges in the metal, exposing pipe and framework beyond. It occurred to Frostbite that were he to stand next to a wall, this thing would - if it missed - punch clean through the side of the ship and expose them all to vacuum! Could Frostbite and Saladin survive the airless cold of deep space? It would certainly expose this thing and give it more to think about, but would it mean the end of the Vanguardians?
Those thoughts flashed through his head as he parried desperately!
OOC 1d20+2-4-9=8. Successful parry of the blow means 33htk is reduced, meanig he takes 39htk from the last rounds mauling. Htk total adjusted.
With a grunt as a second blow smashes what looked to be dark smoke from Frostbites body, a glance down revealed ... no wound at all!
'Call on me! I will do my best to restrain myself! But to let this creature win would be a failure you will come to regret!' rasped the dark power from within.
Frostbite ground his teeth, thrust a hand out, then blasted away with the Dark power!
OOC I assume a hero point is being used.1d20+2+6-17=6 plus Hero Point 1d20=10 for 16 accuracy and 48htk from the blast. Dividers are doubled, meaning the creature has no dividers at all against this blast! 64htk damage! I will update the Dark power options so that the player can instead choose to use a damage multiplier, like a standard energy attack. Using dice like this means that even with a crappy hit roll you are doing excellent damage, but with a great hit roll (something Frostbite doesn't often get) a multiplier could cause more damage.
BLAM!
The distance between the creature and Frostbites hand filled with ice as the temperature plummeted to below freezing! The creature cried out as its body froze, but such was its power it broke free from the tomb of ice and fell to the side, its body shattering into pieces, clattering on the floor and slowly liquefying to reform onto the whole again!
Saladin summoned his power, seeking to send a mental bolt at the creature in front of him! (OOC I recall somewhere he was attempting to do that? Last round I think)
OOC Used 10 PSI for a x2 multiplier 1d20+18=34, 1d20+25=35. Saladin uses a Hero Point adding 1d20=13. 12 points difference, x2, 24htk. Creature has taken 88htk this round. Even for a Class 5 opponent, that's going some!
The creature reeled as Saladin angrily sent the energy Lion at him, clawing the creature and savaging it with all his mental might! It had still taken a colossal effort, and this thing might yet learn from the experience - and reply with its own mental blast! Could Saladin withstand such an assault?
The creature breathed heavily, then grinned. It was slushy, like melted ice in water, but still defiant. "I see I have been too overconfident! You are... varied in your powers... I see that I, too, can choose from a myriad number of effects! Time to..."
CLONK! BANG!!!
The creature looked about, as did Frostbite and Saladin. The engine section detached from the main section with an explosive action, sending it tumbling and spinning towards the oncoming alien ship! As if to speed it along, the engine section fired the thrust jets to push it away from the P'utinarian ship as the deadly missile sped towards its target!
OOC you have a frame each before this thing acts. Frostbite has used his Dark power blast but still has this round of boosted health to benefit from. Saladin has 3 frames still to act (one to take then 2 if he's still standing after the creature attacks).
=========
Anyman saw the engine section tumble towards the oncoming vessel!
He heard the radio comm chime and snarled "Answer that!" to Spartan.
Spartan nodded, ran over and pressed a button. It was Guillotine. "The Frostbot has interfaced with a probe! We've aimed it at the oncoming missile! If its plan works, we should be able to divert that missile, but you'll have to aim from up there! It's ready for launch, but know this - if you miss, we won't get another chance, and that missile will hit us!"
Anyman looked at the viewscreen. The oncoming missile was a dot on the screen that veered to the left and right, erratically! It was like shooting a pea on a wall with a bow and arrow from fifty feet away! They could wait until it got closer, but then the blast might encompass them anyway! His finger hovered over the button, Spartan noting the hand never wavered even for a moment!
OOC Frosty and Saladin to act for 1 frame. The creature isn't immobilised but it is injured. It's too powerful for rank 1 or even 2 field manipulation (if there were such a thing) to effect until its been weakened. Meanwhile the core continues to be eaten away at by the creatures 'sapling' meaning that it will cause a core breach (= 'a very bad thing' ) in the next round or two unless stopped! Of course, before then the section will whack into the alien ship, then the fireworks will REALLY start... Anyman shooting, using Hero Points, trying something different?

Saladin looked at Frostbite and back to the creature. "If you are thinking of a plan of escape, now might be that time, don't you think?" The last part was said with a little more bite to make his point clear.
Frostbite simply nodded what he was asking of himself was more than he had done before, given that he was trying not so much to use more power than he had, but rather to stop using all this power overwhelming his efforts to stay in control. Calling on the power again, he raced toward Saladin, shouting as he did. "Go with me on this!" As he reached him....
OOC: Ok I've not got enough frames so I am not sure how this is going to work. But No 1 priority is to get out of the engine room.
With that in mind, I need to either teleport Saladin and myself to the P'utinarian craft, or gain intangibility 2 so I can fly us through the wall and up to the craft, whilst also gaining a forcefield to stop us both freezing and dying from lack of oxygen. The teleport option is bar far the easiest and most elegant. So its a frame to move, then the creature gets to attack and at this point I am not sure what to do. So plan B
Plan B is if I cannot put into effect the plan above, i.e. teleport us out, then plan b is that I still call on the dark power to fend off the creature, keep Saladin from being pulverized and still then try and teleport out. I think Plan b is more costly as I might end up having to use more hero points and Dark powers to fight the creature and still somehow get out of here.
Either way, I've discovered as a Player I am allergic to PC death, so I'd rather not gain any right now if that is at all possible. So if Plan a or b don't fit with what happens next, do whatever would given what you know of me to keep things moving on.
And good call on Saladin, I did indeed mental bolt him, but forgot to mention it again in the subsequent email.

Re: World War II - The Vanguard Issue #4 - The Battle Of Britain!
The Vanguard
Frostbite (10HP, Htk 22/48+43 (1fr), Htc 60+60 (1fr), 2 Dark Power XP Energy 15/15)
Anyman (16HP, Htk 26/48, Htc 60 1 Dark Power XP)
Saladin (Lionheart) (16HP, Htk 48/65, Htc 78 PSI 12/22 round 1/5)
Guillotine (on V-Ship)
Boadicea (on V-Ship)
Spartan (on V-Ship)
P'ertaria (on V-Ship)
Where:Space!
Anyman shooting, using Hero Points, trying something different?.
ooc: Not sure I understand what is being asked of Anyman. Frostbot took over a probe and wants me to fire him and the probe at the missle and if I get near enough to it, he can take over the missle and turn it? Or he can control the probe to smash into the missle, if I aim close enough, to set it off?
Heck, what would it cost me for him to be able to take over the guidance system of the missle and redirect it back towards the ships that fire it so they can worry about it?

Re: World War II - The Vanguard Issue #4 - The Battle Of Britain!
Silver Sentinel (HP12, Htk 88/88 Htc 42/110 ARMOURED)
+Anchor (Htc 25/88)
+Fastback (hungry!)
Where: Qrii Scout Ship in Orbit
What: In the docking bay where Sentinel can change the car into armour!
Silver Sentinel and Anchor dashed down the corridor, turned a bend and entered the large hanger area. There! Left where they'd last seen it, the car didn't really resemble a car at all - in the short time they'd been away, the Qrii had dismantled it, analysed it and discarded it as being useless! To them, maybe... Silver Sentinel looked around the vast hanger, then heard the 'tick tick tick' of a multitude of wings coming from the corridor behind them! Sprinting across the gap to the pile of bits, he held a hand out. The metal collapsed like liquid, then slithered like a thing alive across the floor and up a leg, covering his body and changing to form a tight fitting metal suit! It would not be as protective as the suit he'd left back home. He cursed himself for a fool, knowing now that a 'night off' for the Vanguard involved - at the very least - being abducted by aliens!
Anchor turned, lowering Mary to the floor and sifted through the wreckage of the car, now wood, leather and glass, the metal having gone into Sentinels' suit! "Ah never tire o seein' that! It's a weird thing you do Sentinel, but ah'm glad ye're up tae speed again cause we're gonna be in fer th' fight of our lives when them things catch us! You got any bright ideas, cause in this hanger we're gonna get surrounded an' attacked on all... ah! Ah figured th' lassie'd bring a snack!"
He dug out - from underneath the remnants of the car - a picnic basket and pulled aside a cover. He couldn't help himself but laugh even when the first Qrii started entering the hanger. "She's such a skinny thing! Ah bet she chomps this right up in seconds an' don't put a pound on!"
He knelt, waking Mary gently and waved a jam tart under her nose. At the smell of food Fastback fluttered an eye open, took a nibble, then another... suddenly she was up, and there was a blur of motion as she devoured the enitre contents of the basket!
"Hey!" shouted Anchor. "Leave some fer us! Ye never know when..." his voice trailed off as he saw the emptied hamper placed aside, Mary dabbing her mouth with a handkerchief. "Bugger." muttered Jock.
Fastback turned to Silver Sentinel. "SorryaboutthathadnoideaIwouldcollapsewhenItriedtousemypowers!" she sped across to join Sentinel and Anchor, side by side against the horde spewing through the entrance they'd come in. There were other doors out, but these looked thick and solid. Resin, like everything else, but with darker sections that suggested strengthening.
"Ah can have a go at them doors. Or th' walls, but that'll leave you an' th' lassie tae be eaten by th' bug men! Any last suggestions 'fore I get stuck in an' start breakin' heads?" snarled Jock. He was frustrated, but determined to go down fighting!
Silver Sentinel knew that Anyman had sent a section of the ship they were on tumbling through space like a missile towards the ship he and the others were on. Where it would strike, and when, with what effect, were all the unknown factors!
'Then call on a known factor' rasped the Dark Power within. 'Me! Do not let your friends die when the solution to your problems is but a thought and gesture away! Let me out, I will destroy your enemies!'
