The eggs showed up as pulsing heat sources and together more or less 'whited out' his vision completely. They were alive, well and ready to hatch!

Haunt started backing out and noticed one heat source - of these horrific alien creatures - moving slowly, curiously towards where Haunt was.

They could see heat sources too!

It started moving slightly faster as if unsure, and some of the other guards started taking notice...

OOC I'll remember to post Haunt or Steeplejack at the top of the post because you've been posting faster than Dave for a few days and his posts might get submerged!

change into octopus form, hug the bottom of the sewer, hope the water cools down my body heat enough and continue to move away as fast as he feels safe to do so. Increase water freedom and swimming to 3 each and ultravision of 4.

The Prince wasn't here. Would Steeplejack try to stop the operation here or move on?

OOC: Ugh sorry I seem to keep missing posts...

If the prince wasn't here, then there was no harm in cutting loose and more importantly freeing these people and stopping this operation. And any Time stones that Steeplejack could retrieve meant one less Advent lackie to upset the timeline.

But he could easily be overwhelmed and more importantly could cause resistance at the sound of the alarm to his improvisations. Moreover, the mind-controlled, for that must be what they were, people could be made to fight against Steeplejack. Something he didn't relish.

No, he would need to take down the mind control devices then the people could fight back using the very things they'd constructed and then take on Advent. Moreover, he didn't know how many of them there were, so he'd best find out where the control room for the people was and stop that if at all possible.

OOC: OK so find the control room and try and shut down the people and not get spotted or depowered or we're all sunk deeper than a breached sub.

STEEPLEJACK DIFFICULTY 4 HP 84

Steeplejack/Gibb in tuxedo continued to creep about...

Just then he noticed something. The Snake woman nearby was... sniffing the air...

OOC Advent Snakewoman OV6 + DICE FROM SUPER SENSES 5D+ 4 Diff + Roll(7d12)+0: 12,1,12,12,1,8,3,+0 Total:24 DOUBLE plus Roll(2d12)+0: 3,12,+0 Total:39 (49) vs

Good luck trying to catch probably the world's greatest thief!

Steeplejack froze... then moved on as the Snake Woman slithered to a corner to check out nothing.

He moved through the warehouse in his now soiled tuxedo looking for some kind of control room. He didn't find that but he found...

THE NEW VANGUARD! HAUNT Issue #11 with Special Guest Star Steeplejack! - Page 5 Brain-in-jar

A snake woman was only a few feet from it. The 'Thin Man' seemed to nod and move over to one of the workers, adjusting the wire frame headset of a worker. Whatever that 'brain in a jar' was it was controlling the workers like they were puppets! The Snake women and the Thin Man weren't easy prospects though. A fight in here could go horribly wrong and he might find himself fitted up with a wireframe hat himself!

HAUNT DIFFICULTY 3 HP 92

Haunt morphed into an octopus and clung to the bottom of the foulness in the sewer. He hoped his body heat would drop sufficiently and kept moving on... and froze as the creature scuttled through the narrow sewer tunnel at speed, OVER him and down towards the exit where he was headed!

He continued and rose, head slightly breaking the waters surface. There, some twenty feet ahead, the creature stood with its back to Haunt looking out at the sewer feed room... It had sensed ... something... and now it was determined to find whatever that was!

Steeplejack felt repulsed and at the same time somewhat fascinated by what he saw. Advent, whatever they were, we're clearly no one species but a collection or cooperative of evil. That much was obvious by the tactics and their approach to conquest. But what to do, with Haunt here they could easily overwhelm the forces at hand, but here by himself, it would be too easy to fall for a sucker punch with no one to guard his back. How was he to proceed?

He'd already nearly been noticed once, his superior skills meant he'd been overlooked, and not smelling none to clean probably meant he blended in better than he might otherwise. That tar, soot, and stench of the place clung to him, like the smell of cheap booze and fags from a day spent in a local pub. So that was a small mercy, but tactically how could he take on these and win. He had to gain more understanding, how many where there, did they change shifts...but then had he the time? A diversion then...it seemed the best way.

Taking one more look about, he moved off retracing his steps to the roof space, he sought for what he could find.

OOC: OK best bet I think is to start a fire, dangerous but under my present predicament not sure what else I can do. Using the fire for cover I could try and take on the brain creatures and free the slaves, and hopefully, then take down the loathsome louts of Advent on my own terms. So I'm seeking to start a fire in the uppermost part of the building where I hope they've not to got fire suppressants hidden away that it might have a chance to get going. If I can get some ammo to get it started or add to the fun, I'll tip that in as well.

STEEPLEJACK DIFFICULTY 4 HP 84

Steeplejack continued to move away through the warehouse. He'd have no trouble grabbing an oil lamp and starting a fire in one of the rooms that overlooked the factory floor (OOC There are steps from ground level leading up to a walkway around the place and rooms off that, like offices and such.)

These were victorian times. Fire suppressants would be buckets of sand or water, perhaps a hose run to the river and pumped over the fire.

It would spread.

Sneaking into an office Steeplejack saw a desk as if used by standard workers, probably now brainwashed by ADVENT. Though locked the draws crunched open with a slight pull from the superhuman.

Papers, all in French, all would burn. He snuck out, onto the landing, waited until the ADVENT guards (four of them plus the brain in jar) were looking elsewhere then shuttered the lantern and moved it smoothly into the office.

Then he spread the oil about... And lit the flame...

Instantly paper sprung up into flames, and he opened a window to the outside whilst closing the door to the factory a moment later and pulling curtains across the windows.

The fire continued to built, and was now of sufficient strength that the desk immolated. It would continue to burn strongly and spread through the building. As yet the alarm wasn't raised but would be in moments as those Snake Women smelled the burning...

OOC Waiting in here for them to come in, going out through the window, or going back into the factory?

With the fire now fully underway, Steeplejack wasn't keen to wait here, but make full use of the distraction, if he could take out the brain boxes, he might free the people whose instinct when they smelled smoke would be, he hoped, to run for the nearest exit. He might not get to the Advent but if he could stop their crafty scheme and stop them right now, that would be enough. He had to take the victories he got where he got them.

OOC: OK I am going to see if I can't take on the brain boxes and free the folk then lead them out, as best I can.

STEEPLEJACK DIFFICULTY 4 HP 84

Steeplejack pulled the curtains back as choking black smoke filled the room. He was as vulnerable to smoke inhalation and blinding fumes as anyone else and knew he couldn't stay in the room long. He heard something outside and saw a snake woman slither up a pole onto the landing and towards the room with smoke pouring from underneath the door. Pulling the curtain wider he saw the brain in the jar/on spider legs turn to 'look' in the direction up at the burning room, Thin Man stood beside him. The workers were impassive and carried on assembling machine guns.

The Snake Women (two of them) were feet away from entering the room!

OOC Attack as they come in or wait till they do then race past them to get at the brain on legs? BEWARE! Difficulty 4 means this will be NO pushover!!!

The Haunt will approach closer and carefully to try to determine what had attracted its attention. Was it the Haunt himself and it thought he was further away or something or someone else coming closer?

Blast! Steeplejack thought this wasn't going to plan! Not that he had much of a plan, grabbing the cloth, he waited till the snake women approached hoping to use the curtain as a means to wrap them whilst taking them both out or leaping past them to get to the big brains of this little opp.

HAUNT DIFFICULTY 3 HP 92

Slinking through the water Haunt came up to within fifteen feet of the 'Chrysallid'. The creature looked about, scanning in the darkness with those heat sensing eyes. Haunt slipped under the water as it spun on the spot and scuttled back down the corridor, over him and back towards the nest...

Paris was in deadly, deadly danger!

Rising to the top Haunt breathed out and climbed out of the muck, sure the creature had gone.

This whole situation was getting beyond crazy now. Advent clearly had no respect for the timeline and planned to use their myriad types of creatures to disrupt or destroy the timeline, setting themselves up no doubt as a world power. If they succeeded her how would that affect the future? Would Haunt even exist?

With that troubling though he felt sure the boy was not here. He could leave and hope that the situation resolved itself... The clock was ticking.

STEEPLEJACK DIFFICULTY 4 HP 84

OOC Steeplejack wins initiative and surprise this round on the first snake woman as she comes in through the door...

Ohboy, this might be tricky!

MULTI CRIT BLOW Dex 13 + 5D M Arts + Roll(7d12)+0: 11,10,7,7,1,12,6,+0 Total:14 DOUBLE plus Roll(2d12)+0: 7,2,+0 Total:23 (36) vs
OV9 + Multi 2 - Surprise 4 + Crit Blow 4 + Diff 4 + Roll(2d12)+0: 2,8,+0 Total:10 (25)
+5 (to 16) vs RV8 + Multi 2 - Crit Blow 6 + Diff 4 so RV8=8 RAPs damage. Both Snake Women go DOWN and are OUT!

With blinding speed Steeplejack delivers a jarring punch and raised knee to the first Snake Woman then throws the curtain in the seconds face before karate kicking her backwards over the railing and clattering to the floor below!

They knew he was there now!

The remaining Snake Woman hissed, pulling up a futuristic looking rifle and the Thin Man pulled his own future gun out... which HAUNT was only too familiar with!

The Brain moved into the shadows and the workers carried on their tasks...

OOC You win initiative (no need to roll, you are much faster). You can attack both. Bear in mind the +4 Difficulty which will make your life harder. Go!

OOC: Does Sj know about the gun and its power stealing ability? Assuming he does that is what he goes for hoping to wrest it off the creature and use it against them. I'm hoping that as guns in our age, are indiscriminate it's the same for theirs.

The Haunt decides to leave and come back later with reinforcements. First, he needed to get out of here. Second, find a fountain and get cleaned up. Third, depending on how much time had passed, either go to the cafe and wait for his partner or check out the third location.

They did say that they would meet back at the cafe in 2-3 hours, so depending on the time when he cleaned up would make his third choice for him.

STEEPLEJACK DIFFICULTY 4 HP 84

OOC SJ doesn't know many details about the whys and hows of Haunts year long stay in Advent custody, being prodded poked and sampled for DNA, all thanks to a shot from that nasty gun the Thin Men carry. He knows it was a Thin Man and that it's the only weapon they carry...

Steeplejack leaps off the landing in his messed up tuxedo and at the Thin Man!

OOC Dex 13 + 2D M Arts (2D acro) + Roll(4d12)+0: 7,2,10,6,+0 Total:17 (30) vs
OV12 + 5D Acro + 4 Diff + Roll(7d12)+0: 9,9,12,9,12,2,10,+0 Total:24 DOUBLE plus Roll(2d12)+0: 8,1,+0 Total:33 (49) Attack Missed.

With astonishing reflexes, practically the equal of Steeplejacks' own, the Thin man ducks out of Steeplejacks path and takes aim with the gun...

OOC Multi Neutralize 20 + Roll(2d12)+0: 7,2,+0 Total:9 (29) vs
OV13 + 2D Acro - Diff 4 + Roll(4d12)+0: 9,12,12,3,+0 Total:24 DOUBLE plus Roll(2d12)+0: 4,12,+0 Total:40 (49) attack missed

Steeplejack twisted mid leap - quite impossibly for the best of Olympic Athletes and spun in the air, landing on his feet. He felt his shirt split down the middle of the back.

The Snake Woman levelled her head then ... HISSS!

She stretched out her tongue and used it as a rope to lash at Steeplejack!

OOC Snare 12 + Roll(2d12)+0: 1,2,+0 Total:3 ATTACK FAILED

OOC Initiative, Steeplejack wins. Here's a hint. If that gun hits you Steeplejack is in big, deep, nasty trouble...

Steeplejack didn't like the odds, he wondered if what he was doing here was only make matters worse, the prince's brother wasn't here and by endangering himself he was jeopardising the whole mission. But it didn't sit well with him to leave these people in this position. Suddenly he was torn, a seed of doubt that had been there before now grew. He'd started the fire, that itself would raise unfortunate questions, perhaps delays things for a short while, maybe it was time to leave whilst he could.

OOC: Looking for the better part of valour here, and living to fight another day. So Steeplejack is going to try and escape if he can tag a BrainBox all the better, but not going to try and get me in the way of the nasty ray guns. So though it pains me to do it, I think its best I get out, whilst I can. And head for the rendezvous point.

HAUNT DIFFICULTY 3 HP 92

Haunt had been at it a while and by the time he found a fountain, chances were he'd have little time to get over to the cafe and meet the contact.

Cleaning took some time and the stink up his nose wouldn't seem to clear. The creatures below the city were part of some insidious plot by the time travelling Advent bad guys and then there was Moriarty and Fu Manchu with the holy grail. And a Dragon knocking about, as well as Count Dracula, two or more werewolves and many other people considered fictional where Haunt had come from. Had he travelled back to his own time, or an alternate timeline which he was now part of? Time travel was a law and a logic all to itself and it spun the head to think about. All he knew was that in the late 1890s dark powers at work could change the course of human history and only he, Steeplejack and professor Thoth knew the whole details!

Meeting the agent without the Prince's brother might be admitting defeat. Haunt chewed his lip. Maybe there was still time... without a clock it was hard to tell (OOC and I am trying to sync you to Steeplejack if he avoids being death rayed)... maybe he and Steeplejack together could check out the Townhouse, the final location.

ooc: The original plan was to take 2-3 hours to investigate these two spots on our own then the two of us would meet at the cafe to compare notes, not with Nemo's agent, unless one of us found the prince's brother and could rescue him on his own. So if crawling in the sewers and getting cleanup took 2 hours or so, then the Haunt would go to the cafe to wait for Steeplejack.

OOC Righto.

STEEPLEJACK DIFFICULTY 4 HP 84 and HAUNT DIFFICULTY 3 HP 92

Steeplejack made to attack... and instead leapt straight up, crashing through the roof and bounding off into the night! The fire would pour smoke from the building which would be investigated, and if the Advent wanted to keep a low profile that meant they'd have to shut the operation down before people got there in force.

That would have to do.

He headed to the rendezvous with Haunt and tried to quell the sense of defeat he felt from running.

Straightening up his suit as best he could and sweeping dirt/oil from it he strolled across the square in the shadow of the Eiffel tower to a small cafe where he saw Nick Carter sat in the corner. The cafe it seemed would stay open for as long as there were patrons and there were plenty of people out. Some sat, reading, or chatted, or played chess or other relaxing pursuits. Others sat people watching. One or more could be agents of Advent, Moriarty or Prince Dakkar, it was impossible to tell.

Climbing in the seat opposite Carter Gibbs wrinkled his nose. Despite his scrubbing, Haunt smelled like an unwashed toilet...

"And my luck has been as bad as my smell," Nick grunts, while sipping his coffee. "No princeling. Advent has totally taken control of the sewers, making weapons, shipping them out, and making monsters as well. Saw a hatchery while I was down there. No way I could handle it on my own. We are going to need major help for down there. Hope Thoth and the others can pitch in."

"How about you? Since you don't have the young princeling with you, I assume you either didn't find him or too tough of foes. Which is it?"

"Same, more or less. Advent has slaves of the Parisians, working to make modern weapons churning them out to create a one-sided victory. It seems they care little for the timeline - theirs or ours, if they make a good beachhead where they can go ahead without the messiness downstream I guess. In splitting up I found myself in over my head, much like you. There were simply too many and too organised. But I did set fire to the building so that might delay them for a while. Meantime I guess that only leaves one location, and at least together we stand a better chance than we do apart." Gibb looked surprised and then said, "Wow never thought I'd hear myself say that. I guess, despite your smell, you must be growing on me, Carter. Shall we...?" Gibb pointed vaguely in the direction of their final target.

"Wonder if perfume shops are open this late," Nick said with a small grin. "But let's go check out the gambling place and hope that the third time is the charm."

STEEPLEJACK DIFFICULTY 4 HP 84 and HAUNT DIFFICULTY 3 HP 92

The townhouse was in a leafy suburb of Paris and the pair stopped opposite, behind a tree. Looked normal. No one outside it.

Windows were curtained. It was a three storey house set in its own garden. Something still seemed... off... about it and...

OOC Danger Sense 10 + Roll(2d12)+0: 12,12,+0 Total:24 DOUBLE plus Roll(2d12)+0: 3,2,+0 Total:29 (39) vs
OV4 + Diff 4 + Roll(2d12)+0: 9,11,+0 Total:20 (28)
+5 (to 15) vs RV4 + diff 4=7 RAPs.

Steeplejack sensed danger somewhere in the garden. There were a few trees, bushes, a path leading up the house but nothing obviously dangerous... but something WAS there, somewhere.

"So something is amiss, front garden, whether invisible or a trap or trigger for a trap, cross the front and well we'll be blown. What do you think go in from above, or make our own way come up from below, or both"

He grinned at Carter, enjoying himself despite the danger at hand. It felt good to be working with someone again, especially after leaving the warehouse empty-handed.

"Let's see if we can figure out what the danger is first," the Haunt suggests.  "If we can bypass it or turn it off, we could go straight in.  I'm thinking that we may want to come from below otherwise since they seem to like hiding things below ground."

Using Thief skill.  Thinking the two of us together with that skill could handle it but just in case, be ready to go below.  And Stealth to approach unnoticed.

"By the way, if you see a tall skinny guy armed only with a gun?  Kill him in one shot, pound him into paste or run away.  That gun can take away your powers.  Ignore anyone else until he is down.  It's like the rule in Dungeons and Dragons, take out the mage first then the frontline.  That's how I got caught and spent a year as a test subject for the Advent.  They do that to us here, I doubt that we will be captured and used as test and torture subjects."
