Re: Jade Hood and Stone Fist Issue #5 - Evil comes in many forms!
Stone Fist easily made his own path through the milling crowd, leaving the staggered Croc Man in his wake...
Jade Hood kept up, albeit without hopping over dense packed people who were pressing forward to see.
Moments later they were reunited with Mary and the two scientists, and the group made their way through the streets. Ducking down a side road then down another alley they heard the roar of engines and honk of horns as the trucks rumbled past.
Mary laughed, then covered her mouth. "That was amazing!" she breathed, hopping up and down with excitement! Doctor Wulfgang raised an eyebrow, then asked "Vat ... I mean what are they after? What did you do?"
"Like I said, this statue of Sobek, it..." she paused and looked at Jade Hood and Stone Fist. "Do you think this statue is something to do with that... that monster back there?" Her eyes widened and she held it with the tip of her fingers, as if eager to get rid of it.
Just then there was a shout, and Jade Hood turned, seeing the Nazis at the end of the alleyway. A man in a dark suit and leather coat was waving to someone around the corner and pulling a luger from a pocket, taking aim! He was around 40 yards away, so chances were any shot he made might miss, but even so, when the bullets started flying it was hard to predict what would happen next!
OOC Take the Nazis on or make good your escape?

If we do fight I will fire off a throwing star to try and put the mans aim off. In any case if we do fight we'll need to draw them in otherwise we'll be sitting ducks."

Running away for now seems best, unless we think that the Nazis know something we don't, that we really need to know.

Re: Jade Hood and Stone Fist Issue #5 - Evil comes in many forms!
OOC Assuming you are making best speed away from here...
Stone Fist scooped up a woman in each arm, and looked up...
"What...?" spluttered Dr Lin. She was about to protest when Mary wailed "Hold on!" and Stone Fists incredible leg muscles propelled all three to the roof!
Landing with a pounding impact on the flat of the roof, Stone Fist set the two ladies down and turned to look over the edge and dropped to the ground, smashing the floor and sending up a cloud of dust even as bullets zipped through the air! People screamed and ran away from the alley as a Nazi with a machine gun ran up... and saw a flash of movement as Stone Fist zipped upwards again, this time with Dr Wulfgang in hand!
Mary risked a peek over the edge of the roof and yelped as bullets pinged around her, and she leapt back. "But what about..." Stone Fist flicked a nod behind her, to reveal Jade Hood, who'd arrived on the roof in his own inimitable way - with stealth, speed and style!
"This way" he waved, and thus began the escape across the rooftops of Cairo!
=========
An hour later they rested easier, looking at the airport from a rooftop around half a mile away...
"We need to get to India" said Dr Wulfgang. "Those aliens, and the rogues from the future will establish a base there and breed more of those monsters! Unless we stop them, mankind will be doomed - and not know it until its too late!"
Recalling the monstrous creature they'd buried under the city of Cairo Jade Hood and Stone Fist glanced at one another. They faced Aliens, time travellers, Nazis using what looked to be mystical artifacts and superhuman agents, though thankfully the worst of them. Baron Bloot, hadn't reared his head lately, and was presumed injured or dead somewhere.
Neither hero truly thought the Baron was gone forever...
Mary looked at the airport. "The Nazis will be watching it like hawks. They'll have paid off the officials and be watching for us. What do we do? We can't walk to India!"
"Air travel is barely adequate in this backward era" muttered Dr Lin. "Any other means will be unacceptable!" she added, referring to sea travel or going overland.
Mary pondered "You know, one time I was here I needed to hire a cheap, rough and ready guide to, ah, take me on a tour of the pyramids... Anyway, there's a bar I know, not far from here where we could charter a plane. Money might be a problem..."
She looked at the statue she'd bought. "I could find a buyer for this, and our problems with money could be over but if the Nazis get hold of it again..."
Just then Jade Hood frowned, and looked at the lengthening shadows across the city... He wasn't sure how he knew, but there was... *something* on their trail, and it was on it's way - and fast!

Motioning to Stone Fist, Jade Hood scanned the horizon for any sign of pursuit. But he was aware that their enemies might have many ways, seen and otherwise by which to track or even attack them.Admin wrote:Just then Jade Hood frowned, and looked at the lengthening shadows across the city... "Friend Stone Fist, I think it wise that we descend with all haste, I have the sense that we are not alone, something is fast approaching. We must be away to this bar and from this country..."
With that he indicated a small area below, from which they could see a series of allies snake away from the airport, back into the surrounding area.
OOC: ""incoming, lets get away, is my whole strategy. If we can see what is inbound all the better - Stone Fist might be able to use his superior vision. Otherwise I suggest we get to the bar, it might be best to split up and arrange to meet again. Stone Fist go with Mary and I stay with the others, that way we can split any possible pursuit. What do you think Dave?"

ooc: I think sticking together might be best. If we split up, we probably will have the devil of a time trying to get together again in anything other than a couple of months.
Stone Fist looks around to see if he can spot anything coming there way, trusting in his friend's instincts.
"Yeah, if we can't get a plane, then a tramp freighter there might be our next best option," Stone Fist grounds out. "Let's get out of here and see what we can do for transportation before anything else shows up."

Re: Jade Hood and Stone Fist Issue #5 - Evil comes in many forms!
OOC Meh, so much for 12 hour. More like 13. Ah well, will do what I can before I have to hit the sack (about an hour)
Stone Fist narrowed his eyes, but couldn't see... Wait.
In the distance, moving from shadow to shadow between the closely packed buildings there was movement. Not just from one person either. As soon as Stone Fist had seen the flicker of movement, it was gone, and Jade Hood saw nothing as he stood beside his friend. Moments later, they saw nothing, still, and Mary reminded them "Guys? Nazis looking for this? Including guy who looks like a crocodile?"
The doctors from the future looked nervous. Dr Wolfgang spoke up "If we could find some kind of lab, we ..." he gestured to Dr Lin and himself "Could cook up several items that could be useful."
"Do you see a lab around here?" asked Dr Lin. "Really?" she gestured at the close packed rooftops of Cairo, mostly slum areas.
"I was just saying..." muttered Wulfgang.
Stone Fist turned, scooped up the two ladies in his arms and bid the male to climb on his back. Jade Hood was able to make his own way across the rooftops in the direction Mary indicated as Stone Fist made amazing leaps from rooftop to rooftop.
=========
Minutes later the group dropped into an alley and looked across the street to where a bar called 'Logans folly' sat amidst several stores and shops.
"Jack Logan, the owner, traded his plane for the bar, then found out the previous owner had left a giant pile of debts with the business. Unfortunately the new owner of the plane knew how to use it, and was gone before Jack could catch it. Hence the name." explained Mary.
Sat outside the bar were a number of swarthy locals, and foreigners - French, Italian, American, British and others besides. The place seemed to be doing ok, for a low rent dive bar anyway.
The normal throng of everyday human traffic in the street suggested nothing out of the ordinary. Mary looked to the others. "Want me to go in there, or do we all go?"
Jade Hood looked about. That uneasy feeling was back. He saw nothing in the alley behind them, or up and down the street, aside from ordinary citizens going about their business. Still...

Stone Fist, as a dockworker, was used to low life kind of bars since that was usually the only kind he could afford.

Re: Jade Hood and Stone Fist Issue #5 - Evil comes in many forms!
Making their way through the tables outside the bar, the group peered through the smoky gloom of the watering hole, seeing various tables and benches occupied by those who preferred to keep a low profile...
"This is not a place I would wander in without the company of our friends" said Dr Wulfgang, who looked at a large bowie knife jutting from a table top as its owner lay back on his chair, chewing tobacco and spitting occasionally, whilst not taking his eyes from the newcomers, especially the two ladies.
Some of the tables were more occupied than others, and at these there appeared to be heated conversations, mostly shouting about prices or deals, broken or otherwise.
"Hey!" bellowed the bar owner, a muscled fellow in a once white string vest. He looked to be around early forties, grizzled, salt and pepper stubble and well weathered from years in the sun. He was tall and looked threatening, but the sawn off shotgun held pointed up added extra gravity to his words. "Keep it calm, ok?"
The various tables died down somewhat, and the fellow turned to the group as it approached the bar. He glanced at Mary, raised an eyebrow and looked to the others, measuring each in turn. "Not gonna cause me trouble are ya, big fella?" he asked Stone Fist. Then he looked over the heroes shoulder.
Jade Hood was already watching in a faded mirror as several dark suited men stood in the doorway, peering through the gloom of the tavern. looking for someone.
"Friends of yours?" asked the bar owner as it seemed the men in the door (four of them) were about to set eyes on the group...

Re: Jade Hood and Stone Fist Issue #5 - Evil comes in many forms!
The bar tender looked at Stone Fist, taking in the size and breadth of the man, then glanced at those men coming in. "Nazis..." he growled.
"I hate those guys. Out the back there" he flicked his head towards the direction of a door at the back of the bar. "I'll bring a few drinks out back in a minute. What's it worth to misguide those guys?"
Mary opened her mouth, about to protest when the fellow grinned, losing years from his face. "Relax dollface. Scoot. I'll handle these guys..."
=========
The door opened into a beer garden of sorts, the sun beating down in an enclosed area where empty barrels and crates were stacked or tossed. A couple of small round tables and some chairs sat about them.
"Do you think he'll lead those men to us?" asked Dr Wulfgang. He looked nervously about. There was a large pair of wooden doors that were locked, and must give some access to delivery vans. Other than that, it was a climb of two storeys straight up. "No way to escape if they come through that door."
Mary smiled, though she was nervous too. "We have these two." she offered with a grin at Jade Hood and Stone Fist, though fear touched her eyes.

Re: Jade Hood and Stone Fist Issue #5 - Evil comes in many forms!
The Scientists were nervous but Stone Fist and Jade Hood (OOC Still here?) stood their ground, apparently unconcerned.
The Barman, Jack Logan, came in bearing a tray of drinks. A bottle of wine for the ladies, Whisky and three beers for the men. He glanced at Stone Fist, seemed to appraise him, then set the drinks down. "They know you came in. I sent them out the wrong way but they'll be covering the exits. Might cause trouble for me. So... aside from being a sucker for helping a dame in distress, it looks like I might lose the only thing that I have left, flea ridden pit that it is. So what the Nazis want wid ya? Figure ya owe me that at least. Plus the money for the drinks."
Dr Wulfgang smiled nervously and leaned closer to Stone Fist "He might betray us to them! Tell him nothing!"
Logan caught a bit of that and grinned. "Professor, or whoever you are. You look the type anyway. Scared, nervous. Clearly these guys..." he flicked his head at Stone Fist and Jade Hood "Do the heavy lifting. So they keep you around for comic relief or counting stuff."
Mary spoke up "I... we met before. You're a pilot..."
"Used to be" he growled
"We need to get out of here. To get to India."
"Does it look like I have a plane around here?" muttered Logan. "Soon I'm gonna have a whole world of trouble, probably thanks to you guys. So. Why do those guys want you? Your call. You tell me and we'll see what happens. If not? I go out that door, grab my shotgun, a change of clothes and what cash I've got, and try to get out of this dive before the Nazis come back with friends."
He turned, shrugged, and walked towards the door...

"As to what's going on ... are you a fan of science fiction, Logan? Because if you want the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help us God, it will sound like science fiction to you. Does to me and I'm in the middle of it all! How about this? We are after some ... artifacts. Nothing of huge monetary value to most people but of scientific value of such level that if the Nazis get their hands on it and figure out how to use them, they can conquer the world. We are trying to stop them. They are trying NOT to draw the attention of the other world powers' governments into what they seek until they find it and analyze it but they are quite willing to kill a lot of people to get what they want. If the other big powers in the world find out about these things, that alone might cause the next world war to happen as they all scramble to get their hands on it."
He pauses and smiles grimly.
"That's the easy believable part. You want to hear the rest and think we are all crazy? The part where it all becomes a weird science fiction story? Or shall we leave it with what I just said?"
"Are you a single-engine pilot or multi-engine or both," Stone Fist asks conversationally. "If multi-engine, I figure we will just steal the Nazis plane that brought them to Egypt. Will serve them right for trying to kill us ... numerous times.""Does it look like I have a plane around here?" muttered Logan. As Jade Hood listened in on his friends easy banter, he took the time and trouble to look out through the back doors. He couldn't imagine the Nazi's being easily put off, not when the stakes where so high. He peered out as best he could, wondering what support they might have and indeed if even now it was being deployed to ringfence the area, if not the building.
OOC: "I want to see if the only apparent way out is going to be blocked by Nazi's if its not already. In addition if it turns out I can either see, through any cracks in the door, or hear what is going on, I might interrupt and ask if there is any secret ways out? If not we'd better take this show on the road, incase we get trapped here."

Re: Jade Hood and Stone Fist Issue #5 - Evil comes in many forms!
Mary gasped! She covered her mouth before calling out, and looked around. There were tabes scattered about, along with various empty casks, crates and the like.
She started to move towards the crates, then turned to find a table to hide under and paused with indecision, hopping about and biting her nails, eyes wide in fear as she looked to Jade Hood and Stone Fist for guidance!
The gates at the rear of the courtyard/beer garden were opening... and a machine gun barrel poked through the slight gap in the middle! Nazis! And where there was one, there'd be more!
All about the ten foot walls surrounded the beer garden - too high for ordinary men and women to get over easily...
But Jade Hood and Stone Fist were far from ordinary!
Dr Wulfgang ducked under a table, knowing half of him was jutting out! Dr Soo Lin hid behind him, cowering!
Jack Logan walked out the back door of his bar, dressed in khaki shirt, dull brown breeches, knee high boots and battered dark brown leather flying jacket that had been patched in places. He also hefted a sawn off shotgun that was split whilst he pushed a pair of cartridges in. "Ain't no way th' Nazis are puttin' ME outta business without a fight!" he drawled as he moved to duck behind the cover of a flimsy looking crate and waited for the first Nazis to come through the gates!
OOC Quick recap - Jade Hood is a Martial Artist par excellence, the peak of physical human prowess, more or less. He is an accomplished Thief, acrobat and hand to hand fighter, able to hold his own against half a dozen ordinary human foes! Stone Fist has been exposed to one of the elements of the potion, unwittingly, and his unique DNA reacted in a way that shouldn't have been possible - it gave him super strength, ultra dense skin and his trademark 'stone fist' - a punch powerful enough to powder stone!

OOC: Its all good for me on my monitor, and to answer your other question re rules and what not. Basically all I know is the GH ruleset. I, as you well know, hate learning new rules. I don't find it easy to sit and sift through abstract equations and what not to get to the bottom of how to calculate damage or a feat or something. However I do know that there is a lot more innovation when it comes to the randomness of dice. They often talk about the binary nature of dice, and call it falling forward. How to turn failure into something more interesting. So its the idea that if you fail, or succeed, a bit like critical tables, something other happens. Now the other usually throws up choices. "You miss the villain with your last bullet but strike his henchman behind. His falling body presses the leaver, before Dr No, has had chance to go by his secret escape route and now the doomsday machine has started with both of you remaining in the base." I think the idea is that Dice shouldn't shut down a situation but provide more meaningful - if somewhat painful, choices. I think this is your thing, par excellence Paul. You've always been very good at saying A or B, both equally valid choices, which do you want? Both are equally bad, but rather than it being just A or just B it can be either...its also the idea that even when things go well, or when the chips are really down there is always some meguffin, some twist, some forgotten character who now comes to the fore, and gives the reason he was there several scenes back in the first place.
I think 13th Age tries to do this, that is the Fantasy D&D/Pathfinder Hybrid rules. And I think some indy games - which Dave might know more about, also try to do. Savage worlds, or the Fate games and also Dungeonworld (Not sure of the name) also try to do this. Letting the dice have meaning, but shaping the randomness that often leads to yes/no choices that can make a game dull, dull, dull. Especially when our heroes come up with something worthwhile or good and still it goes pair shaped.
Jade Hood, new that getting out of the Garden alive would be no problem for he and his friend, but the others would be cut to ribbons. A thought that made him wince, without a moments hesitation, Jade Hood, dodge forward weaving an almost impossible dance around the gun to draw the weapons holder to himself, before taking a running leap over its barrel, seeking to connect with the man, before he had chance to pull the trigger.
OOC: It is good to be back ;-)

"Holy Moley! Can't we jus thave one simple little trip without these goons messing things up," Stone Fist complained as he charged the gate.
actions: plan to use his body to block any machine gun fire to protect his comrades. Will let Jade Hood have the honor of playing offense while I play defense for the first round or so.

Re: Jade Hood and Stone Fist Issue #5 - Evil comes in many forms!
OOC I was going to have Stone Fist do the same thing, seeing as bullets ping from his hide, most of the time...
Jade Hood dashed up to the gap in the gate even as more hands shoved it wider, and he leapt through the air as the gun went off!
OOC No need for initiative check against mundane mooks like Nazi soldiers... Jade Hood attacks...
2d10 → [10,6] = (16)
"Haiiii YA!" he cried, and crashed into the Nazi holding the machine gun!
The man flew 20' backwards through the air past his companions - half a dozen Nazi Soldiers and an SS officer all in black - to crash into empty crates by the side of the alley! The alley was used by lorries delivering beer barrels and the like for the bar, only this time it was used by Jade Hood to dump the trash!
The soldiers opened fire on Jade Hood (2 shots) and Stone Fist (3 shots)
OOC 2d10 → [5,10] = (15) Hit, 1 point of damage as it nicks our hero
2d10 → [3,5] = (8) Missed, and Jade Hoods body position means it hits the wall/gate rather than anyone else. They got a 'team attack' bonus.
On Stone Fist:
2d10 → [2,7] = (9) Missed (pinged off floor or walls)
2d10 → [3,9] = (12) Hit (pings off Stone Fists chest)
2d10 → [1,3] = (4) Missed (fires into floor)
The roar of gunfire rang out, and Jack Logan shouted "Get down you fool!" only to see Stone Fist deflect bullets from his chest and arms to collect on the floor!
Behind the Nazi Soldiers the SS officer snarled, touched his thin wire framed glasses up on his nose and reached inside his coat for a weapon... the likes of which none of our heroes had seen before!
The heroes could tell with their trained eyes with the way the man moved he was no mere Nazi officer!
OOC Initiative
1d10 → [4] = (4) Heroes
1d10 → [4] = (4) Nazis
You guys, then Nazi SS, then Jack and the scientists/screaming damsel, then Nazi goons.

Jade Hood, knew how to deal with such an enemy. Not by treating him, as the American's are want to say, with 'Kid gloves'. With a blinding hand motion, suddenly as if they teleported into his hand, three throwing stars were swiftly grasped and then just as swiftly swishing through the air toward the SS commander. Jade was aiming for his hand, seeking to incapacitate his aim, but just in case had one of the other throwing stars go for the gun as well. He followed this with a move closer to the men, seeking to use them as cover as he moved on up toward the officer.

Stone Fist grabs the gate, rips it off its hinges and then uses it as a baseball bat against the stormtroopers swing away at them with it, allowing Jade Hood to handle the mysterious man with the Buck Rogers raygun..

Re: Jade Hood and Stone Fist Issue #5 - Evil comes in many forms!
Jade Hood flicked throwing stars towards the Nazi officer...
OOC 2d10 → [4,1] = (5) Doh. Maybe a little too hastily (i.e. rubbish roll). Miss.
The officer sneered and side stepped with a fluency and deftness that suggested he was very well trained - Jade Hoods' level of ability, somehow!
"You are... inferior!" laughed the officer as he raised his gun at Jade Hood!
Meanwhile Stone Fist tore the gates from the hinges and used them as a bat against the rank and file soldiers!
OOC 2d10 → [4,8] = (12) Hit, but not a great one. 1 damage to each of the Nazi soldiers...
With a THUD! he knocked the soldiers back. Though dazed a little they were still on their feet, and raised their weapons to fire at Stone Fist!
The SS Officer let a shot off first though, after adjusting a dial on the 'ray gun'.
The ray blasted a blue beam, which struck Jade Hood even as he tried to dive aside! An ordinary person would have been caught full on - Jade Hood managed to avoid the worst of it even though it was burning agony... of pure cold! Frost coated his body and he shivered... but whilst he was injured, he was made of stern stuff and still on his feet!
OOC Roll was 2d10 → [10,3] = (13), hit +1CS, 4 damage leaving Jade Hood on 2 Body (out of 6).
The Nazi soldiers opened fire on Stone Fist!
OOC Rolls...
2d10 → [6,2] = (8)
2d10 → [10,3] = (13) Hit, no damage
2d10 → [2,9] = (11) Hit, no damage
2d10 → [10,2] = (12) Hit, no damage
2d10 → [2,7] = (9)
2d10 → [7,1] = (8)
With a deafening roar of gunfire the soldiers pumped round after round into Stone Fist who shielded his face to stop the incessant gnat like stings on his body... By the time the smoke cleared there were dozens of flattened bullets pooled around his feet, empty shell casings all over the floor, and half a dozen astonished Nazi soldiers, wide eyes in fear at the man wearing shredded rags with not even a pink welt to show for having been blasted!
Jack Logan cried out "What the hell? Who ARE you guys? You know what, don't matter... hey! Nazi!"
He levelled his shotgun at the officer and fired!
OOC 2d10 → [8,1] = (9) Miss
Jack gaped as the Nazi officer calmly stepped aside.
"How are..." he quickly looked around. "There!" he pointed to a partially covered manhole. Mary yanked it open and started climbing down to who knew where. "Hey tough guy, hold 'em off! Yo! Other guy, covered in frost! Let's get outta here!"
OOC Initiative Heroes 6, Bad Guys 5. Same again - you go first. Then officer, then soldiers (though they are spooked and most likely going to run seeing as their guns are worse than useless).

Slightly peturbed by his poor aim, Jade Hood nonetheless used the momentary distractions around the SS officer to fire a second throwing star, hoping for better aim, even as he shook off the ice covering to help hone his aim. Then without a backward look, he leapt back off the gun, and toward the manhole cover, waiting at the top for his ever protective partner.

Stone Fist again swatted at the closest Nazis then back towards the manhole, covering his friends' retreat.
