THE VANGUARD BERLIN GROUP

'So much fear, so many negative emotions, has opened a doorway to Berlin. The Priest passed through, and has orders to slay your mortal form. If he does so... I may not be able to rejoin with another body immediately.' said the inner voice. His concern for Lance Allard was not at all touching!

OOC Berlin is in a state of panic. Anyman has a choice. Spiderweb is dead..

"Can he sense me," Lance asked the voices inside him ."us?" Will he come to us or do we have to go find him?"
ooc: Gestapo HQ! Who knows who might be inside at this moment! Hard choices.

If that Shadow Priest can sense where Lance is and head for him then I would prefer to get over to Gestapo HQ and fight it out there. Let him help me destroy the place. I'm hoping he just popped out where the otheres were by accident more than anything.

IF he doesn't have a homing sense on Allard, then Anyman will have to bypass Gestapo HQ and go after the Shadow Priest so the others can take out more of the psychics.

"We just lost Spider Web," Lance communicates mentally to the other Vanguards who can hear his mental thoughts. "I have, what my inner demon calls, a Shadow Demon that just appeared and killed him. I've caused so much panic and destruction here that it was able to use those negative emotions to appear in our realm. Void was near Spider Web and probably will be dead in the next few seconds."

THE VANGUARD BERLIN GROUP

'The shadow priest knows your general location. The exact pinpoint of your location isn't possible whilst you wear human form and do not call on the dark power. That is what confounds them, and why they do not constantly attack. If several of us are in one place that makes it much easier for them, however.' said the voice inside Anymans head.

'He will draw you out. He knows that melding with a human, rather than simply using them as a vessel, to be discarded as trash when they are 'burnt up' corrupts us. It gives us... compassion. And other unknown thoughts and feelings. Even the thought of it sicken me, but there are other benefits. The symbiosis makes us the most powerful individuals on this planet, and in a large portion of the universe. Together? We are the ultimate force against evil, but the path to that ultimate goal is fraught with peril. Some will not survive. Your friend, the one known as Kitten, and the mortal who took the name, Darkshadow. They will return, but not as you know them. The problem is when. Whilst they are gone we are weakened, and so the Shadow Demons strike, which makes sound tactical sense.'

Putty, inside Allards head, offered another perspective. "He will try and draw you out - by killing the populace of this city! Whilst the death of relative innocents will darken the shadows in this place and make it more likely more of them will come through the gate the 'other' describes, think on this. They are the enemy. The Nazis show no mercy to theirs..."

And yet another voice added to the conversation in Allards' head - he was starting to feel like there was a party going on in there! 'This is Wynn. Lionheart and the others disabled the Psychic Network beyond the borders of Germany. It will take them a while to get back up and running. It's a tragedy about what has happened to SpiderWeb, and possibly Void, but remember the mission. The Psychics are the main eyes and ears of the Nazis. Do whatever it takes to get rid of them. Including calling on the Dark Power. The price will be high - it always is - but failure brings a penalty that will sentence millions to death over the coming years...'

OOC couple of choices - Gestapo HQ, use the Dark Power, head for the palace, try and help Void. Over to you Smile

"Looks like I'm going to be the biggest Boogeyman in history of the Third Reich," Anyman sighed both mentally and outloud. "If that Demon Priest goes on a rampage and kills lots of people, I'm going to get all the "credit" for it. The normal populus will think he is me."

He straightens his shoulders, changing his form into a woman to really throw the hunters off, girds his loins, etc. And heads for the palace - not to save Void, as it will probably already be too late for him - dammit! - but to kill the psychics.

THE VANGUARD BERLIN GROUP

Disguised as a lady, Anyman made his way across the square, away from his intended target of the Gestapo building, and down a now quiet street towards the Palace. Seeing it in the distance, he picks up his pace...

=========

The man in the evening suit gave a strangled cry as he dangled from the hand of the red skinned man holding him up...

The hand relaxed slightly,allowing Void to speak. "B-beg? Damn you, no! You killed the boy, you beast! Slaughtered him! I'll see you burn in hell before I do any more than spit at you, fiend!" and he hawked up what he could, spitting in the Shadow Priests eye.

"There is no fear in you. You provide no sport, unlike the youngster. His fear was delicious. He died in agony and his last moments were laced with exquisite pain." rasped the horrid creature as it tightened the grip on Voids throat. Nearby was the black scorch mark left by Voids summoned demon, sent screaming back to its home plane with a casual backhand from the Shadow Priest! Void was hopelessly outclassed and outmatched. He had only one trump card to play... "Guh cha helllk"

The Shadow Priest frowned, then smiled, baring fangs. "Go to hell? Why, I do suppose I will, and that place will provide me with such emotions to feed on, I will positively drown in a sea of bliss! But you will... eh?" He looked down, and saw Voids trembling hand pull the pin from the grenade hooked onto his belt pouch, then pluck it and stuff it into the top pocket of the Shadow Priest.

BOOOOMMMMM!!!!

Void died, blown to smithereens, as the creature was flung against a wall, smashing it inwards with the impact! Waving dust aside, it straightened a crick in its neck, glanced down at the ruins of its chest and cursed. "Now I need a new shell. Curse you human." it snarled, and strode out into the street.

OOC Void is dead.

=========

Anyman paused in his run, looking about. Somewhere nearby, a matter of several hundred yards he suspected, Void had died.

He moved up to the steps of the palace, but saw guards barring the way. "You cannot enter Madam. Orders. Turn around and seek shelter." said one of the pair of soldiers. Both were dressed in all black armour woven like a cloth, save that it was glossy and hard. Their full face masks were the same save eye slits allowing them to see. They didn't carry guns, but instead wore two wrist weapons each, fed by a pipe to a pack on their backs. Flamethrowers? Or worse?

OOC Anyman can go through them, or round, to another entrance, though the place is locked down tight. The Shadow Priest is also out there, and he's gunning for all those without fear. The Justiciars - what remains of them - have serious reason to be fearful now...

"Man, do I suck as a leader," Lance thought to his two selves as he backed away from the entrance. "Two of my people down and all we've done is make it to the outside of the building. Time to change that. Hope that demon comes after me in here!"

Anyman goes around a corner and changes back into his familar form. Spotting a window, doesn't matter if it is barred or not, he charges it with his head down, intent on smashing through and working his way down to the cellar area as quick as possible.

THE VANGUARD BERLIN GROUP

Waiting for a gap in the patrolling guards, Anyman made it to the cover of the building walls, the grand old place looking rather run down and unmaintained, a sign of Hitlers disdain for the Royal family in Germany.

Diving though a window, he rolled to his feet. A drawing room of some kind, save it had been smashed up and vandalised, no doubt by nazis intent on following their leader like lemmings, absorbing his every word and rant as if it were law, which some of it was now.

Moving into a corridor, Anyman heard distant voices, and set off. His bandaged face did not conceal his eyes, which were cold and showed little mercy to the Nazis or their insidious allies! Somewhere he knew Garland and Mist Maiden would find themselves hunted by the Shadow Demon Priest, and there was very little he could do about it!

Then 'Putty' spoke in his mind. 'These Shadow Demons feed on fear and terror, along with the other negative emotions. Therefore you and your comrades will stand out like sore thumbs when surrounded by such emotions. If you wish to draw the Shadow Priest towards you, give the Nazis a taste of their own medicine!'

Down the hall Anyman heard laughing and joking, and moved near to the doorway of a large, grand room. Whatever it had been, with ornate ceilings and polished tiled floor, it was now a guard room, with tables scattered about and a dozen Nazi guards, all off duty from the looks as Anyman risked a peek around the door corner, were playing cards, eating, reading books or laughing and joking as they stood near the window, smoking.

He could move on without being noticed, or interrogate a few of these goons, find out information that could prove useful later. Or... he considered Puttys words. If he wanted to instil terror in them, he could get some payback against the creature that had slaughtered half his team!

ooc: Just want to double check, this is the building we believe the psychics to be in, right? If so, Anyman is going to walk into the room with the guards, make a pair of giant mallets out of his hands and try smashing the floor in front of these guards and smash his way down, level by level until he finds where the psychics are. I doubt they would be anywhere except at the deepest levels, in order to keep them safe from any bombings of the city.

If this isn't the building, then he will do something else.

THE VANGUARD BERLIN GROUP

OOC This is indeed the Berlin Palace, a shadow of its former status thanks to the Nazis using the place as a hangout. In the cellar of the place is where Anyman would expect the Psychics to be... and he'd be right.

There was stunned silence and amazement as the bandaged man in trenchcoat and hat walked in, glanced at his hands, the said appendages forming into huge mallets...

"Stop!" shouted one of the guards, rushing for his weapon.

Anyman ignored him and started pounding with his hammer like blows! Floorboards smashed and caved inwards, and the joists holding them up cracked in protest... before they too smashed inwards! Almost the entirety of the Nazis in the room were swallowed up by the new hole in the floor, and they fell some 10m down, onto hard concrete of the basement floor! Anyman peered in, and looked down upon a bunch of white coated scientists who were dragging lobotomised Nazi psychics out of a room with a glass window when soldiers rained down from above! There was shouting and calls for the alarm to be raised...

One of the Nazi soldiers in the room with Anyman reached his gun, cocked it, and levelled it at Anyman... suddenly a cloud sprung up around his feet, and behind the soldier a naked woman appeared! She placed a hand on either side of the mans head, then joined her hands with a sparking bolt of lightning! The man screamed, lighting up like a christmas tree, and fell forwards, into the hole. A klaxon started ringing out in the place, and the sounds of shouting and many booted feet running could now be heard.

Embarrassed and covering herself, Mist Maiden changed back into her mist form, quietly speaking... "I've been popping out of the radiator pipes into every room. When I saw the men in here I wasn't sure what to do. Then you strode in and... well I could let that soldier shoot you!"

Anyman was reasonably sure that anything the Nazi soldier could do would be of minimal effect, but he was glad to see Mist Maiden alive. Answering his unasked question, she added "Garland is in the garden, preparing an escape route..."

With the alarm ringing in his ears, soldiers swarming to his current position, and a gaping hole in the floor leading to the basement area of the palace where the Nazi psychics were housed, Anyman had plenty to think about.

'There may be a way to save your two friends. The ones slaughtered by the Shadow Priest' said the rasping voice in his head. 'But you would have to act quickly.'

Anyman started! Something else to think about!

Mist Maiden reminded him. "The Nazis will be here in force soon! If we are going to do something, we need to make it fast!"

THE VANGUARD BERLIN GROUP

If we are going to do something, we need to make it fast!".

"How do I save my dead comrades," Lance thought back to the voice in his head.

"Don't worry about their guns, bullets can't really harm me. I want you out of here," Anyman said outloud. "There is a demon coming to hunt us all down. I am going to fight him here. It has already killed Void and Spider Web, I don't need your deaths on my conscience too! You two get off the grounds and try to do what you can to slow down any help from outside getting to this building. Smash cars. Block roads. Set buildings on fire. That kind of thing. Don't expose yourself!"

He blushes when he realized what he just said and the state of her undress when he said it.

"You know what I mean. If you don't hear from me or see me within an hour and the fighting seems to have died down, then I died or I got away. We will try to meet back where we landed but if I'm not there in a reasonable amount of time or the spot gets too hot, get out! Do your best to get back to Englad on your own."

He waits to see what Mist Maiden and the voice have to say.

THE VANGUARD BERLIN GROUP

Despite being something of a shrinking violet, Mist Maiden formed her cloud form into a semblance of human shape and spoke up, though it was still barely more than a whisper and tricky to hear over the shouting and running about that had the city gripped in fear. "We're in this together, sir! There's no way I'm leaving you here to fight on your own! When I signed up I was told that there was a good chance I'd die for my country! Well I don't want to die, but I certainly won't back down from a fight! We have a mission to perform, and I intend to see it through! Garland will too! You should see out there - the back garden will be a forest by the time she's finished! We'll disappear and the Nazis won't see which way we went! So let's blow this place and get out - together!"

'Plucky little so and so isn't she?' rasped the inner voice. 'The Shadow Priest will slaughter her, no matter whether she's a cloud or not. Shame. Still, there's very little fear in her, which is a surprise. My brother in that old mans body chose well. Now... listen mortal, for the Shadow Priest is preoccupied with sorting out a new body. They are no true symbiotes like us, and so whilst they can access more power than you can in your puny mortal shell they find that the bodies they are using crumble and die that much quicker! Call on me, on the Dark Power, and I will guide you to your butchered friends. Then we shall see what we shall see. I intend to resurrect them and press into service a couple of Shadow Demons. Wait! Before you protest, recall that I was of the ruling caste, and any Demon I summon will obey me or see their soul blasted into nothingness! My brother, when he gave those mortals their powers, imparted something else, a resilience, of sorts, that will allow what I propose to work. But only if their souls have not completely departed! that is why you must hurry!'

The clatter of footsteps coming down the corridor made Anyman turn. This room would be swarming with Nazi soldiers in moments! He looked down in the hole he'd made in the floor. There were guards taking aim with machine guns and shouting, looking up at him and Mist Maiden, though neither had anything to worry about. Yet. When the Nazi Metahumans were alerted that their psychic base was under attack they would come rushing... even Anyman would have to make himself scarce then - unless he called on the Dark Power!

'Yes... that's always an option. But I'll be the first to admit it's like swinging a sledgehammer to pin a note to a door!' chuckled the inner voice 'I'm ready to be called... just say the word and watch the fireworks...'

Right then Anyman knew that calling on the Dark Power would sound the death knell for every man, woman and child in this city and the surrounding area! If Hitler were in residence here... well, he'd be caught up in it too, but the man would have a plan for that, a contingency. The stakes and rules of the game had changed, forever, and the players needed to keep up... or be swept from the board!

Mist Maiden hissed "Do we go down there and fight our way through to their psychics? The guards are coming!"

=========

{{Calling all Overmen! This is Berlin Psychic Corps sending out an urgent request! You are recalled! We are under attack!}}

Everywhere across Germany, and even reaching into Belgium, where the rest of the Vanguard were battling against the advancing Nazi forces, the most powerful of the Nazi operatives stared vacantly, hearing the desperate order in their heads. Without word of explanation, they started breaking off from what they were doing and made best possible speed to Berlin!

OOC you are going to have company soon, depending on the speed of the Nazi Metahumans. They are Class 4, which means some can hit Mach 1 or higher, and some even faster than that. A single Class 4 would batter the Justiciars silly and give Anyman something of a kicking, though you may figure a way to turn things round. But an army of them? That's a different (painful!) story!

Going to take a day or two to think on this one. Also got a very busy weekend coming up. Really really hate to use the Dark Power here. But then again, ending the war or at least taking out their major power center is very very attractive.

OOC Letting loose with the dark power in these circumstances will be something that Anyman has little control over once unleashed, so thin k carefully! That said, the points you make are valid - wiping out Berlin might save a lot of lives... or it might have other repercussions... Well, I say 'might' when I really mean 'will' Smile The choice is yours though and the game will turn in a new direction if you so choose.

[/quote]

Anyman was about to agree to having the Dark Power within him bring back his dead teammates, especially having someone like Void, who uses actual magic and could summon demons of his own. The three of them could finish off every threat in Berlin together and then head for Dunkirk and save everyone else!

He opened his mouth and ...

"The Road to Hell is paved with Good Intentions," Putty says quietly inside his head.

"For the Want of a Nail, a Shoe was Lost;" he says outloud instead, "for Want of a Shoe, a Horse was Lost; for a Want of a Horse, a Battle was Lost."

"Hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions . . . ? If you prick us do we not bleed? If you tickle us do we not laugh? If you poison us do we not die? And if you wrong us shall we not revenge?"

He sighs.

"Mist Maiden," he continues, turning to the naked woman, "there is a Shadow Priest coming. That doesn't mean anything to you so I will explain it like this: You are the equivalent of a naked four year old girl trying to hurt a full grown well-trained man who is armed to the teeth and who enjoys hurting ... slowly and painfully, mind you ... four year old girls! That is you and every member of our team, which is why two of them are dead now! That is the difference between you and the Shadow Priest's power levels. I, on the other hand, am nearly his Equal, even without using all the powers within me. So you will do what I say!"

"I say, take your remaining teammate and flee this area! Avoid anyone and everyone here! Instead, at a distance, set up roadblocks; burn buildings, smash cars, do whatever you can to slow down or stop anymore troops and UberMensch from making it here. That will give me the fighting chance I need for us to complete our PRIMARY mission."

"And don't tell me that you don't understand those orders or try thinking about telling the General that you never received such orders, if we get back, because I am going to use one of my powers now to make sure the General and all the remaining Vanguards know what I am about to do and what I am about to face and what my orders to you are! If we survive, we will meet back up where we landed and try to make it back to England ... together. My word on that."

"NOW GIT!!!!!!"

He makes a motion to swat her on her naked butt just like one would swat a cow to make it move in a pasture.

ooc: I assume she "gits", even if it is just to get out of my sight and hang around at a distance.

"Attention Fellow Vanguards," Anyman says over the new mental link, "this is Anyman. I am inside the building with the psychics, a very short distance away. Two of my team is dead because a Shadow Priest appeared and killed them. I have ordered my two remaining teammates to flee the area, to not engage the enemy, to avoid anyone! They are to slow down the normal soldiers, outside this area, and any approaching UberMensch that they can. Apparently, most of the Nazi Ubermensch are on their way here to stop me from destroying the psychics."

"Instead, I am going to fight my way to the psychics' chamber and start killing them. The fear should attract the Shadow Priest, as he is looking for me even now, and I will fight him there and by doing so, have him aide me in wiping them out totally. My ... Dark Voice ... told me that he could bring back my two dead comrades, that their souls have not yet left their lifeless bodies, that he could enfuse them with lesser demon who could aid us in this fight. I ultimately rejected that choice but not by much. If you do not hear from me again, you will know why."

"O God of battles! steel my soldiers' hearts;
Possess them not with fear; take from them now
The sense of reckoning, if the opposed numbers
Pluck their hearts from them. Not to-day, O Lord,
O, not to-day, think not upon the fault
My father made in compassing the crown!
I Richard's body have interred anew;
And on it have bestow'd more contrite tears
Than from it issued forced drops of blood:
Five hundred poor I have in yearly pay,
Who twice a-day their wither'd hands hold up
Toward heaven, to pardon blood; and I have built
Two chantries, where the sad and solemn priests
Sing still for Richard's soul. More will I do;
Though all that I can do is nothing worth,
Since that my penitence comes after all,
Imploring pardon. "

Anyman ends the mental link.

actions: Once Mist Maiden leaves, he turns into a human size bowling ball/wrecking ball and smashes his way towrds the psychics' chamber. He is going to run over or otherwise ignore the soldiers and their weapons in order to stand and fight inside the chamber. If it is easier to smash through walls or floors with his Grade Two Strength to avoid them and still more or less go straight to the psychics chamber, he will do so. They can follow the path of destruction after him and wind up being killed in the really big fight.

"If you have any ideas on how to attract that Shadow Priest," he says to his two friends sharing his body, "then I'm all for it! As long as it doesn't involve releasing the Dark Power."

"So," Putty asks, "you have given up the idea of using the Dark Power to destroy Berlin?"

"No," Anyman replies. "If I am on my last legs and the mission isn't over yet, then I will release our "friend" and his power at that moment."

As Frostbite pondered the message of the German motorbiker in front of them, his mind was suddenly filled with Anyman's voice. Somehow he wasn't surprised. Clearly he to faced a difficult choice, it just seemed that when the choice came, you had to hope you could control it or hope too many people weren't hurt in the ride.

After Anyman, finished, Frostbite gave a mental nod of ascent, he really didn't know what else to say. But if the worst came to the worst, he'd be there with him. Frostbite had no doubt that Anyman would be a man, holding on to the last.

He beamed a quick parting message, "England still expects...tread carefully, brother!"

Garland

Location: The Berlin Palace, base of operations for the Nazi psychic network

Having said his piece, Mist Maiden is about to say something her eyes filling up. Instead she salutes and 'collapses' into a gaseous form, drifting out of the window and towards where Garland was still filling the royal gardens with a forest to cover their escape!

Anyman watched her go, then transformed himself into a six foot pinball! Rolling himself into the hole in the floor, he dropped to the lower level of the palace, and mayhem ensued! Troops and scientists alike either got out of the way or were 'pinged' from the ball and into the walls! Doorways were no obstacle - he simply widened them! Smashing through one wall after another, the pinging ball scanned about, looking for something that would prove to be the hub of the Nazis psychic centre! He was close, he felt!

=========

The ground flashed below them. The cream of the Nazi superhuman effort, pumped with every enhancement the Nazis could provide!

They closed in on the great city of Berlin, targeting the palace and the attacking British metahuman!

=========

"Impossible!" cried a Nazi soldier.

He'd just emptied a full clip at Anyman, point black range, and wasted his time! The bullets had bruised the Vanguardian, but otherwise had flattened against his skin and collected on the floor! Anyman rolled again at the metal doorway and the troops guarding it with their lives!

He scattered them like ninepins and smashed into the iron door. His searching about had smashed the lower floor of the palace, including a number of supports that saw upper floors teeter on the edge of collapse! Now he'd come across a door where the Nazi troops were making a last stand!

Suddenly a piercing pain shot through Anymans head!

OOC He takes 12htk from psychic attack (roll 10 for Nazis with effective 20 Ego from their collective, 8 for Anyman with his 12 Ego, and x2 energy used)

He gasped, slowing, and several Nazis came to their feet, dazed and wondering if they'd made a dent on the Britisher!

One pulled a grenade, twisted it, and stood next to the Vanguardian. "For the Fatherland!" he cried, and held the grenade up, intending to set it off and take the intruder with him!

Instead a dark hand closed around the mans wrists, tore his arm off at the shoulder and popped the lot, grenade and all, into its mouth!

Then came a stifled WHUMP! and smoke trailed from the corner of the creatures mouth as it grinned. "Crunchy." it rasped.

World War II - The Vanguard Issue #3 - Operation Dynamo! - Page 3 Ok9bpx

Those still alive in the the room looked on in absolute terror at that which had appeared in their midst! For its part, the Shadow Priest fed on their fear, licking his lips and magnifying it, so that the Nazis died of shock!

"So fragile. They break so easily. Tell me, Prince, how long were you going to play this game, hiding behind that mortal shell? When will we see you unleash your TRUE power?" growled the Shadow Priest. "Perhaps it's because you've gone soft? After all, even when I tore the man and the stripling apart for my pleasure, supposed friends of yours, you did nothing? Oh..." he waved a hand about. "Save make a mess."

Suddenly a crackling energy form flashed into the room!

World War II - The Vanguard Issue #3 - Operation Dynamo! - Page 3 K975mg

Anyman instantly felt dizzy as powerful radiation flooded the room and the palace around!

Behind the battered metal door the psychics cried out, losing their hair and teeth almost immediately, clawing at their throats as destructive hard radiation swamped their bodies!

OOC Anyman will take 2D6 radiation damage per action (4D6/round) with reduced dividers (to zero) with this guy in the room... Starting with 9htk

The newcomer looked at the dark skinned demon and the huge pinball in the smashed room. "I will destroy you both unless you power down!"

The Shadow Priest laughed. "You could try. But don't get HIM angry..." he chuckled. He leant against a wall and added "I'll go quietly! You have me, Mr Big, Powerful Mortal!" he laughed!

"Others are on their way. They'll be here in seconds!" declared the Nazi. He eyed the demonic form and asked "Are you not affected by my radiation at all?"

The Shadow Priest smiled, then made a shooing gesture with his hand. "I'd sort him out first if I were you! He's about to bring this whole place down!"

Anyman squinted, his eyes burning from the crackling, hard radiation the Nazi was putting out. Every footstep he took left a puddle of melted rock! He was lethal! Even his mere presence in the middle of the Allied forces would cause wide scale death and sickness! And yet... he looked at the Shadow Priest.

He faced a foe that wielded power like that which he stifled...

'Like.. but less powerful! Much less! I am a god! Bring me forth, mortal, and I will bring a rain of death down on this blighted city!' said the Dark power inside Anymans head...

"Ahhhh... my liege!" proclaimed the Shadow Priest. "You at least show some backbone! Strike me down! Use your power and your fury to wipe this country from the face of the planet! Do it! Restore my faith in you, and I will follow you! We will ALL follow you, my Dark King!"

OOC The Nazi has 5 frames, being Class 4. The Shadow Priest has 6, being Class 5. You, a 'mere' Class 3, get 4 frames. Initiative 7 Anyman, 3 Bad guys. 2 frames to you, then these two act. How this goes is entirely in your hands, but Anyman as he is will be smeared across the walls and floor if he's not careful! At least the radiating Nazi has done Anyman a favour, inadvertently. The remaining Nazi Psychics, and indeed, everyone still in the palace save the superhumans, are suffering from intense radiation sickness that will kill them in a short time!

.

Going to use my two frames to get through or around the metal door into the room with the psychics. Maybe just maybe there is an escape route inside and/or a nice big explosive self-destruct device that the Nazis put in there so their psychics could never be captured and used against them.

Anyman doesn't bother to waste his breath. He doesn't have much left. He smashes his way in or oozes through the cracks, whichever works fastest.

Anyman oozed like flowing liquid through the cracked masonry around the door, splashing through onto the other side where he came across a large room. In the centre was a large metal sphere, although it looked like a giant pearl. It was covered with copper wires that trailed off in different directions to desks formed in orderly rows through the room, and from there to metal skullcaps worn by people slumped at their desks, clearly suffering from radiation sickness!

There was a large window set into one of the walls into a control room of sorts. Again, scientists and Nazi officers in there were slumped over panels, clawing at their faces as the radiation attacked their bodies in the most painful of ways!

Anyman could feel the radiation eating away at his own form. Were he not superhuman he felt sure he would be dead by now, as some of the psychics were. The room could easily accommodate near on a hundred psychics, all connected to the central 'processor' - the sphere - via the metal skull caps, but most of the chairs were empty. Indeed, there were still bloodstains on the desks and floor where the previous occupants had died. Now, the rest were dying - at the hands of one of their own!

There was plenty of shouting going on, but most of it was the agonised cries of the Nazi soldiers in the palace as they came near the pulsing light shining from the previous room, looking down through the hole in the floor Anyman had made. Most staggered back, blood running from their eyes and nose, hair falling out, skin pulling away from the bones!

"We can get more psychics!" shouted the Nazi from beyond the door. "But you? You are a dead man, Britisher!" The rage in the mans voice was incredible!

The door started to glow, then melt in the middle, oozing like candlewax whilst terrific heat was given off, causing Anyman to shield his face!

The Nazi stepped calmly through the melted doorway, then turned up his power!

OOC He's using energy points to boost his Field Manipulation now. Roll of 2D6=12. x2 from Energy points=24htk. Anyman has 15/48htk remaining!

An intense wave shot outwards from the Nazi! Instantly those still alive in the rooms around, scientists, psychics, soldiers, officers, all screamed and died, burst into flames! The room was bathed in bright white light, and the metal objects started to glow with the heat whilst the wooden chairs and desks burst into flames! The copper wires oozed and flowed, making a mess of the sphere and severing any final connections to the Nazi psychic network!

Across Germany all psychic connections ceased instantly!

Feeling his skin bubble, Anyman knew he couldn't take much more of this! The building around started to spontaneously combust, concrete started cracking and splintering, metal supports started oozing and breaking down at the atomic level, and for hundreds of yards around the palace, terrified people collapsed, choking as their lungs collapsed and flooded with blood!

Behind the Nazi, the Shadow Priest leant against the door, pointing with a finger at the Nazi metahuman. He smiled, then closed his fist.

The Nazi started forward, then looked about, eyes wide in horror. "What...? What have I done? I... I felt such rage! All I wanted to do was... kill you... but this?" He looked at the arched skeletal forms of the victims all about, the destroyed sphere that amplified and transmitted the psychics thoughts, now a ruined mess of slag, the burning building all about... The Nazi saw Anyman on his knees, gasping for breath as the air burnt in his lungs, then turned on the Shadow Priest. "You! This is YOUR doing!" he snarled, and gathered his fists, ready to attack the Shadow Priest!

OOC Things are about to get hotter in here!

Anyman, fighting through waves of pain, knew that his time had come. There was no way out of this place, save through or past the two powerhouses! As his tongue felt about to burst, eyeballs strained in their sockets, he looked down. The floor had a gulley, a channel of sorts with a drain hole in the corner. Perhaps it had been a meat cellar, and the meat hung to drain before being stored at some point? All Anyman knew was that his choices were simple. Take on the two in the room, call on the Dark Power, or try to escape down the drain hole! Even staying here would see him fried to a crisp as searing heat still emanated from the Nazi!

To quote Monty Python -- RUN AWAY!!!!!!!!!

Anyman squirmed and oozed down the drain.

"Let those two fools fight themselves," he muttered to the others in his head.

"Attention," he said through the psychic link with the other Vanguards, "all current psychics are dead, thanks to the unwitting aid of a Nazi Ubermensch who throws off massive amounts of radiation. The metal sphere they were connected to is slagged. The Nazi seems about ready to fight the Shadow Priest, who is too powerful for me to face without the shadow powers in me. I'm attempting to flee. I'm hurt bad. May not make it. Too much radiation taken in. Signing off."

Whilst the Nazi's SS officer, with a smirk on his leering face, held a pistol over Frostbite he began to count.

DavidMcMahon wrote: "Attention," he said through the psychic link with the other Vanguards, "all current psychics are dead, thanks to the unwitting aid of a Nazi Ubermensch who throws off massive amounts of radiation. Frostbite held up his hand, to the man it radiated cold and he said, "Freeze!" Before communicating with Anyman.

"Anyman, they shadows are darkening, they must be feeding off all the misery that is being caused here as well as across Europe. A war is a fine thing for fear. Do what you need to get out of their, we can't loose you at a time like this, but beware. If you let loose the power for any other reason than to aid your escape, you may end up serving the Shadows accelerating their entry into our world. We're here for you buddy if you need us!"

Then Frostbite lowered his arm, looking once again at the Nazi, "There's no need to keep counting." And with that he strode casually, taking his time to where the men where. He had no intention of showing just how upset he was. Both with what he'd seen in the officer and what he'd heard.

OOC:

Will continue this in my own thread.

The injured Vanguardian splattered like liquid into the drains below the Palace, feeling the throbbing pulse of radiation even from here! He heard shouting above, and a voice inside said 'It takes courage to walk away from a fight you can win. There is more at stake here than simply posturing, and you resisted the urge to call me. I must admit, my own emotions are far harder to keep in check. You did well...'

Anyman got an insight then into the nature of the being inside. It fed off dark emotions. More than ever, with a war going on it would find the urge to unleash its might near impossible to resist as it took in more and more power. Sooner or later Anyman knew it would need to be unleashed, and it would not be denied!

He had other things to worry about though, and shaped his pained form into a long string, flowing like an eel through the muck and sludge of the sewer system, occasionally stopping to throw up. He hoped it was from the smell and taste of raw sewage, but knew that the radiation had hurt him badly.

Finally spilling into a large sewer tunnel, he tried - and failed - to reform into his human form, instead coiling up into a limp pile as sludge flowed over him, barely keeping his head up.

He heard the screams above him, in the streets, and saw the manhole covers glowing. Whatever was happening up there was bad. The people of Berlin, for better or worse, were suffering, and the Shadow Priest would benefit from the sheer terror that flooded the city!

Feeling the effects of the sickness, and finding himself as weak as a kitten, Anyman made another attempt to pull himself back into shape. He did so, but not without cost, and the pain caused even him to black out!

=========

The Vanguardian awoke to pitch darkness in the sewer...

Aside from the dripping water there was no sound. As his eyes adjusted he saw dead rats scattered about, not a mark on them. He was convinced then that his superhuman body had saved him. Glancing up, he saw the manhole cover leading to the street. 'The Nazis deserve what they get' said Putty inside him. 'They killed my parents, hunted my people down, betrayed them.'

'The Shadows have darkened in this city. I feel the fear. People still yet live here, but there was a titanic battle. The Shadow Priest controlled the Nazi and caused his form to rupture, creating a wasteland for miles around. There is great danger still here for your mortal form Lance Allard.' said the Dark Power inside.

'And the priest is still looking for you. He used much of the despair created when the Nazi metahuman exploded to create a small gate into the shadow realm. Berlin is now in the hands of the shadows...'

"That's a fight for another day," Lance groaned. "What do Americans say? Time to get out of Dodge! Let's hope Garland and Mist Maiden made it and are waiting for me where I told them to go."

Lance Allard stumbled and slid and crawled down the sewer - changing form when it seemed easier to do so, not really caring where it went as long as it took him out of the city. Once out, he would figure out where he was and make for the landing site.

Crawling through the sludge, Anyman had to stop and rest, knowing full well he was sick, and hurt bad. (OOC he's now on 14/48htk, losing 1htk an hour due to radiation sickness, which will kill him unless he gets treatment. Normal people within the range of Atom-Krieger's explosion stood no chance.)

Sucking in a lung full of foul smelling air, he slithered and slipped down the sewer system looking for a way to get some distance between him and the doomed city...

=========

The Shadow Priest looked about...

"Unexpected." it snarled. All around, buildings were alight, many had been flattened, and the centre of Berlin, the traditional seat of power for the Nazi regime, was in tatters! "Killing so many has deprived us the chance of feeding from their terror." Knowing it had failed in its mission to get Anyman to unleash his Dark Power, and with that open a gate into the Shadow Realm as a million people cried out in fear and terror, the Shadow Priest had to swallow the bile and ash of defeat. It stalked through the ruins, coming across a few wounded people, their bodies charred and melted down one side. They didn't even look human any more, and yet they lived. The Priest looked about, then at the Palace which had been ground zero, now just a crater. The arrival of the Nazi metahuman had been unexpected, as had the mans response to having his mind controlled. He'd attacked the Shadow Priest, then gone 'nova' when he'd seen his attacks have no effect! Shaking its head, the Shadow Priest waited. All about it, darkness gathered, then a hundred hands sprung forth, snatching the demon and dragging it back into the shadow realm, screaming!

=========

A hidden location...

"What?" spluttered the man. He emerged from a bath of goop, looked around with wild eyes! Damon Trowers walked across, a towel embossed with a swastika in hand. "Mein Fuhrer." he smiled. The man in the glass coffin glanced down at his naked form in the sludge, toned, muscled, young! "What happened?"

"We're not sure. Scans indicate a nuclear explosion in Berlin, several megatons worth! Worse than that is the lingering radiation, but Bentham is working on that, plus our Skrall allies have technology that can nullify it. The people of Berlin though..."

Hitler wasn't interested in that. He flexed a hand into a fist, feeling the superhuman strength coursing through him! "What have you done to me?"

Trowers smiled. "Remember when we did the 'routine scan' on you? We copied your brain waves, a 'back up' if you like. You are immortal, and every time you die we can simply put you into a new body. In this case, a template of the PSI Agent we are working on. There is a man out there who, if we can get our hands on him, will provide us with the genetic information we need to provide you with a near invincible body! And an army that cannot be stopped!"

Hitlers eyes lit up. "They must pay for the destruction of Berlin. Send word to the front. Wipe them out. All of them!"

Trowers smiled. Handing the muscular man a bath robe, he stood aside as the dreaded Nazi warlord climbed from the bath, then tested his strength by denting a metal stanchion! He rubbed his hand to ease the pain, but marvelled at his superhuman strength! "I promised you a true 'master race', did I not?" smiled Trowers.

=========

Emerging from the sewer to a feed pipe into a river, Anyman staggered clear, dropping into the water...

Washing the sludge and muck from himself, he felt sick and tired, bones feeling like they were melting, muscles as if on fire! He clambered up the muddy bank to look upon the distant city of Berlin. It glowed from the fires that raged there. He could hear the screams and cries from those still trapped in the place, doomed to die. The survivors would fair no better.

'Many P'utinarians died this day' stated Putty, inside his head, with sadness tingeing his voice.

Getting his bearings, Anyman started for a wooded area, the progress slow and painful.

Nearing the woods, he heard shouting, and moved up beside a tree. Looking from a hidden position, he saw Mist Maiden who was tangible and clad in a white surgical gown. She was holding Garland, who looked absolutely terrible! Her bark like skin had shed all down one side, leaving raw oozing sap spilling from her. All the leaves on her body had wilted and turned brown, and the grass, plants, even the weeds on the ground around her had turned brown and died!

The pair were surrounded by four Nazi Jet Pack troopers two holding flame throwers, the others rifles. Anyman saw the confusion on Mist Maidens face as she tried to understand the Nazis barked commands.

An arm stretched out, slamming into the side of the Nazis head, sending him flying! As the soldiers turned, another fist slammed outwards, catching the next man directly on the chin, spinning him like a top, whilst he pulled on the trigger of the flamethrower!

Anymans hearts leapt in his throat!

He relaxed a heartbeat later as the other two Nazi soldiers were engulfed in flames!

Staggering past the screaming men, he helped the sobbing Mist Maiden up, and they turned to look at Garland."The trees! She was somehow connected to them! When they were torched..."

'They are coming' said the Dark Voice inside. Anyman turned, gritting his teeth against the pain. He saw dots flying upwards and outwards from the city. Dozens of jetpack troopers spreading out and looking for him! The city meanwhile continued to burn. Anyman had accomplished his mission, but the cost in human life had been colossal, not to mention the P'utinarians caught up in the conflagration!

"Leave... me..." gasped Garland. "I will heal... here.. in the forest.. over ... time..."

Mist Maiden wiped her tears away and stood, determined, gathering energy in her hands and determined to take some of the Nazis with her!

'Anyman! This is General Wynn! Hold your position! Extraction imminent!" said another voice inside Anymans head.

OOC The Nazis cornering the ladies are gone. There are dozens more heading out to find you though, and the coiling smoke from the burning bodies will act as a beacon!

World War II - The Vanguard Issue #3 - Operation Dynamo! - Page 3 Empty Re: World War II - The Vanguard Issue #3 - Operation Dynamo!

The Vanguard
Anyman
Mist Maiden
Garland
Void (Deceased)
SpiderWeb (Deceased)
Lionheart and Silver Sentinel teams

And then the Vanguardians ship arrived. The jetpackers veered away, though some not fast enough! They punched into the shields, some deflecting off at an angle, others splattering as energy sliced them up! Unlike space vessels they were not hardened to resist energy shield deflectors, being mere flesh and blood. It was the same as if they'd run into a brick wall! Some used their initiative, hovering and pulling grenades from their belts, but that left them vulnerable to the ships rail guns which chopped them up with ease!

Discarded grenades tumbled from the skies to impact on the ships hull, shaking the plating when several explosions broke through the shields at small points. The Skrall technicians set to immediately, and there was little in the way of damage to repair.

As the ship hovered overhead, Mist Maiden turned to Anyman. "We have to go!" she shouted over the din of the ship and the wildly buzzing jetpackers! "More superhumans will be here soon, and they'll drag the ship down!" She looked at Garland, and saw the woman had laid on the floor, with vines sprouting up to encapsulate her body. "Leave me." she croaked. "We will meet again"

Anyman had lost two team members, now faced losing another! A light shone down, and the pair felt their forms being gently pulled at by a tractor beam, as did Garland! "No!" she screamed. "I need to be with the Earth, or I'll die!"

Frostbots voice rang out "I need confirmation that all of you require lifting out of there please Anyman, sir. There seems to be excessive resistance from Garland. Shall I increase the power?"

=========

On board the ship a new alarm blared.

A much larger vessel, bigger even than the one in which they travelled, had been picked up on the long range scope!

A Skrall technician tapped Lionheart on the hip and pointed at a flashing panel. In no uncertain terms the alien was saying "it's time to go! Now!"
