Re: THE NEW VANGUARD! HAUNT Issue #8
"At least we have this lot on murder. Good work. Cortez was a scumbag and maybe didn't deserve that, but it's another bad guy off the streets. I'll not grieve for him." said Robson. "We'll wrap this. Go check out Cortez's place." He gave a number to contact SMITE and a reference to contact Robson in particular then started supervising the taking of evidence and photographing the crime scene.
"I am quite sure that you will eventually find out that the Chaos Cabal was hired by the Advent for this attack on Cortez," The Haunt tells the SMITE Agent. "You should send that information up your government channels. The Advent wants that Time Stone of Cortez's."
he UKChampions - Pixiefire, Girder and Bruiser - were quiet and respectful even as Cortez was carried away. Even Bruiser seemed short on words. Pixiefire squeaked "That was fun! And we took out some BAD people. We should do it again!"
"We'd best get back." said Girder. "Th... Thanks for your help. And...uh... we were glad to be of help." she added awkwardly.
Bruiser rolled his eyes "Yeah yeah pass me a sick bag. Let's get outta here. Later, goons." he turned to Wraith, was about to say something then turned away. Wraith had been watching the SMITE agents the whole time and glanced at bruiser before adding "I'm done here. good luck with what you're doing. Somewhere out there are more scumbags like the Chaos Cabal. Good working with you."
"It was good working with all of you as well," The Haunt tells the other heroes. "It is not often I get to do so and knowing that there are others out there I could contact in the Cause of Justice is ... refreshing."

Steeplejack nodded, "That is good to hear Soldier, been enough blood spilt battling the wrong people. Mistakes were made on all sides, it's about time we got our act together. Glad to hear you agree."The UKChampions - Pixiefire, Girder and Bruiser - were quiet and respectful even as Cortez was carried away. Even Bruiser seemed short on words. OOC I'll move you along to Cortez's place unless you want to say something to Robson/SMITE, Wraith or the UKChampions in attendance...
Before they left, Steeplejack took a moment to say, "Hold it, I've been around but you guys..." and took a sidelong glance at Bruiser "You all did well out here. We couldn't have done it without you. Less in-fighting, less temper and more tactics together and you kids 'll do alright. See ya around."
Nodding to Wraith, Steeplejack knew he'd do his own thing, whether he would tail along or not anyway. And added to Haunt, "We'd best make tracks we don't want to find that they had some plant who stole the goose with the golden egg whilst we were patting ourselves on the back."

Re: THE NEW VANGUARD! HAUNT Issue #8
Steeplejack lineswung whilst Haunt flew on ghostly wings.
A suburb of East London in one of the roughest parts was their destination. Mean eyes watched from shadows as the criminals that made the night their domain passed the word around that Justice was abroad. For this one night of the year the crime figures would plummet. Haunt had a reputation from a couple of years ago. He was feared and when he disappeared the cowardly lot criminals are breathed a sigh of relief. Word would spread. Justice was back, and it wore a cowboy hat.
Steeplejack was more of an unknown quantity. It would take some research and word to get round that one of the legendary, if short lived EXECUTIVE was back on the streets!
The pair arrived on the roof of a block of flats. According to the address given the apartment was on floor 13 of 20. A quick swoop round the outside revealed curtains drawn and no lights on in the apartment. They could go in at roof level, floor level - if the lifts worked - or crash straight through hthe window, though that might require some confirmation that it is the right apartment and not some unwitting innocents!

"You want to go down from the roof or through a window," the Haunt asked Steepljack, "I will do the other. That way we can go in two ways ... just in case."

"Roof" steepljack said without hesitation, "tough enough borough to live in, lets not make it worse."
Steeplejack was happy to let Haunt take point, he was better know and his aura of fear took care of a whole lot before ever a whole lot else needed to be done. "That Aura of fear, of yours. That is a pretty good trick." Steeplejack quietly chatted away. "it ever failed you?"
OOC: OK whilst Sj makes small talk he'll be ears out, senses raised to for anything he should be alerted to.

Re: THE NEW VANGUARD! HAUNT Issue #8
Haunt will shape-shift and disguise himself as a regular Joe, go through the front door of the apartment complex to see how the first floor is numbered. That should tell him what side of the building and which windows belong to Cortez's room. He will then leave, return to his Haunt form while summoning a fog and then stretch up to the window[s] he expects to be Cortez's. He will then peek in them while waiting for Steeplejack to come down from the roof to the front door of the apartment.

Re: THE NEW VANGUARD! HAUNT Issue #8
Steeplejack heads up to the roof, slightly nonplussed by the Haunts lack of smalltalk. Perhaps the man was all business.
Using his ability to cling to the outside of the building the hero sprints up the side of a the building as if it were level! With a peek and swinging over the ledge he lands without sound on the roof. Looking around he sees the usual - aerials/sky dishes/air conditioning machines dotted about and detritus blown about from years in the city. No pigeons roosting though. Strange. A box like structure on the roof housed a door/stairs to access the top floor. And the door was slightly ajar.
OOC Danger Sense 9 + Roll(2d12)+0: 10,1,+0 Total: 20 vs
Threat 8 + Roll(2d12)+0: 6,10,+0 Total: 24 NO THREAT DETECTED
The dark doorway is empty from where Steeplejack is crouched but it seems unusual to have found a doorway open on the roof. An oversight by a maintenance worker or does it mean something else?
==========
Haunt stretched up and gripped with iron hard clamping grip on the window ledge of the right room.
Peering through the window he saw mostly pulled curtains but a gap revealed enough to peer through. Light from a torch flicked about and scraping/crashing noises suggested someone in there was looking for something.
Haunt stifled an inward groan. One of these guys had been the one who'd shot him, nulling his powers which had seen him a year in captivity having who knew what done to him. He'd lost a year of his life, and he would have to be very, very careful in case a blast from that gun they carried zapped him and sucked away his strength again, or his ability shape shift, or his fear inducing power...
He also saw another being in the room, noisily tipping the couch over and looking about/underneath it.
Hulking and standing about 7' tall yet with a speed and grace of movement that belied its bulk the creature hefted the couch feet in the air with a single hand and held a gun/rifle in the other.
They were looking for the TIME STONE!

"Riiiighhhht" Steeplejack thought to himself, like someone gets a break like that everyday. He proceeded with caution alert to the fact there might be some sort of booby trap or that others are here ahead of him and he was about to burst in on them. If half of what Haunt said was true of this aliens then they really needed to have their wits about them.
OOC: Proceed with caution into the stairwell, looking for anything that ought not to be there whilst heading down. Sj will use walls staircase and even slide down on his line down the stairwell if that seems the most expedient means to avoid the stairs and possible traps

The Haunt wants to go for a surprise attack. Raising the window slightly, using his Thief skills if it is latched to unlatch it, he wants to try stretching an arm unnoticed across the floor in order to quickly try and grab the gun out of the other guy's hand before he is aware of it.

Steeplejack steps into the footwell and immediately pauses.
A creature pretty much FILLED the stairwell and was ready and waiting with some kind of laser weapon aimed RIGHT at Steeplejack!
OOC Steeplejack is much faster than this guy. He goes first. The creature/alien here intends to shoot Steeplejack from the looks of it!

Wow ugly, Steeplejack thought, but then it occured to him some of the things he'd been hearing about the Advent and this guy might well fit the bill.
Moving his hand quickly, he separated the floor from the creatures feet, hoping that the sudden absence of a stairwell might give him something to think about unless of course, he could fly!!!
OCC: Ok so open up a big enough hole in the ground and keep dropping him down - gonna be a pain later, for the works people, but for now Sj wants to just catch him and then try and deal with him/it. And besides, he doesn't like guns.

Haunt opens the window as stealthily as he can!

Haunt snakes an arm across the room like a flash and is astonished by the surprised reflexes of the tall Thin Man as he almost snatched the gun out of Haunts grip even though he didn't know the attack was coming!!!
Haunt yanked the gun away from the alien and knew the pair would soon be on him!

As explained before, if you want to add dice to your defence with Acrobatics (up to 3 dice for Haunt) you can do but every die you use for defence is taken off any you can use for Attack.

Re: THE NEW VANGUARD! HAUNT Issue #8
OOC Steeplejack doesn't affect wood/metal, which the stairwell is most likely constructed from (lower weight than concrete) so you may want to revise the action. You can affect the concrete walls of the tower block but these things are generally constructed as quickly and cheaply as possible. I pass new builds on Flats every day in Manchester next to the railway and its scary how quick they go up and how insubstantial they are until things like floors walls and ceilings are put up!
Re: THE NEW VANGUARD! HAUNT Issue #8
OOC Hmmm. had a think and a quick google. I'll go with the concrete stairwell thing.
Steeplejack gestured and the steps beneath the creature vanished to become a hole... into the room below!
OOC Earth Control 9 + Roll(2d12)+0: 3,11,+0 Total:14 (23) vs
OV 5 + Roll(2d12)+0: 10,4,+0 Total:14 (19)
+3EV (to 12) vs Rv 5 = 7 RAPs. Success.
The green giant drops with a THUD into the room below which housed various systems that serviced the flats. With a CRASH the creature landed... on its feet!
It levelled the gun and waited a heartbeat for a clear shot then FIRED at Steeplejack!
OOC Because you've used no Skill dice to attack with you can use all of your Acrobatics skill dice to avoid the blast. You'll like this (new rule) as Steeplejack gets +4 Dice from his Acrobatics 7 (he had even more before the character juggling about but to get Martial Artist so high along with Dex 13 things needed changing...).
Muton Dex 8 + Roll(7d12)+0: 8,5,12,4,10,5,8,+0 Total:16 DOUBLE plus Roll(2d12)+0: 10,12,+0 Total:38 (46) vs
Steeplejack Dex 13 + Roll(6d12)+0: 2,6,3,1,8,11,+0 Total: 19 (32)
+5 EV (to 18) vs RV 18 (using Force Shield) = NO DAMAGE!
If not for Acrobatics Steep would have taken 2 damage!
Throwing up a shield of concrete Steeplejack deflected the blast harmlessly into the wall! The creature roared defiance and tried to take aim to get a better shot!
OOC Steeplejack is up! The creature is angled to aim at Steeplejack but Steep goes first.

OOC: I think we were saying that with dex Devestating attack was the way to for Sj to go, if that is still so in this situation, assume it's his default move esp against something so big, and armoured and probably strong etc. So martial arts attack against the Muton.

Re: THE NEW VANGUARD! HAUNT Issue #8
OOC You aren't using any extra dice from skills on Attack so you can use all your Acrobatics dice on defence, no problemo
Haunt looks at the weapon. Weird. the grip has some strange pads on it, like pressure pads, and there's no trigger.
Oh well. He unleashes his AURA OF FEAR on the two Aliens!
OOC Aura of Fear 10 + Roll(2d12)+0: 4,2,+0 Total:6 (16) vs
Thin Man Int 7 + Roll(2d12)+0: 9,6,+0 Total:15 (22) AOF FAILED
Muton Int 5 + Roll(2d12)+0: 12,7,+0 Total:19 (24) AOF FAILED
Screwed by this dice this time round...
The Thin Man shouts something to the other alien and points at Haunt, which kind of tells Haunt that his attempt to reduce them to quivering wrecks has been unsuccessful!
OOC Thin Man ACID attack on Haunt Dex 12 + Roll(2d12)+0: 6,10,+0 Total:16 (28) vs
Haunt Dex 10 + Acrobatics Roll(5d12)+0: 4,11,7,4,6,+0 Total: 8 DOUBLE plus Roll(2d12)+0: 1,4,+0 Total: 13 (23) - one of the few times rolling a double is NOT beneficial!
Haunt is HIT by Acid! +£ EV (to 17) vs RV 14 = 3 DAMAGE from Acid! ABSORB the damage or TAKE IT (Putting him on 11/14 BODY)
Is his flashback triggered...?
Will 8 + Roll(2d12)+0: 7,11,+0 Total:18 (26) vs
Flashback 8 + Roll(2d12)+0: 2,9,+0 Total:11 (19) Haunt RESISTS the Flashback
The Acid attack doesn't quite feel the same to Haunt as the one which scarred him horribly, but every time it splashes close or he is attacked by it, it may 'trigger' his flashback!!!
Haunts cloak sizzles as a hole burns right through it, and he grunts in pain as his left side feels the burning sensation of ACID on it! Where it strikes brickwork the acid burns CLEAN THROUGH and it must rank as one of the most potent acids out there, certainly enough to rival the deadliest stuff man every produced!
The MUTON blasts with the laser rifle!
OOC Muton Dex 8 + Roll(7d12)+0: 4,9,1,10,2,8,4,+0 Total:8 DOUBLE (but 19 looks good too) plus Roll(2d12)+0: 10,5,+0 Total: 23 (31) vs
Haunt Dex 10 + Acrobatics Roll(5d12)+0: 5,9,3,11,6,+0 Total: 20 (30)
HIT +1 EV (to 14) vs RV14 NO DAMAGE
The laser blast strikes Haunt in the chest... but aside from singing the costume the incredibly durable hero (OOC seriously, the THING or COLOSSUS could learn something from Haunts Body stat) shrugs it off!
The Muton has incredibly accurate aim and it seems confused, even lightly whacking the side of the rifle as if it were faulty!
OOC INITIATIVE:
Roll(3d12)+0:
5 HAUNT (31)
1 THIN MAN (25)
3 MUTON (23)

Haunt goes first again! Watch for that ACID!!!!

Re: THE NEW VANGUARD! HAUNT Issue #8
Steeplejack drops into the room which is some kind of boiler room with multiple boilers feeding the building...
Unleashing a series of dizzying kicks, chops and blows at his opponent, he doesn't have time to wonder who... or maybe WHAT it is!
OOC Going for a DEVASTATING ATTACK ... Steeplejack Dex 13 + Roll(7d12)+0: 9,12,1,5,9,6,3,+0 Total: 18 DOUBLE plus Roll(2d12)+0: 7,3,+0 Total: 28 (41) vs
Muton Dex 8 + Dev Attack 8 + Acrobatics Roll(6d12)+0: 1,1,12,7,2,9,+0 Total: DOUBLE ONE FAIL ADD NOTHING TO THE OPPOSING VALUE TOTAL (16)
+7EV (to 16) vs RV 12 - 12 (dev Attack) = 16 DAMAGE MUTON OUT!
Steeplejack kicks the Muton clear through the partition wall, sending the creature bouncing like a 500lb ping pong into the next stairwell and thumping huge chunks of concrete out as it goes! The Hero speeds after it with astonishing agility barely breaking his stride and sees with satisfaction that it is down and out for the count!
He straightens and hears distant ZAP! ZAP! suggesting Haunt has engaged the enemy in the flat around three or four floors below!
OOC That double 1 (and indeed any roll of 1 and 2) indicates an AUTO failure and not adding dice at all to the total. Applies to everyone and doesn't come up very often but its bad news when it does, regardless of skill or hero point dice. Rolling 3 or less (in these current house rules) is a fail!

The Haunt is going to take the damage ... this time. Ok, Acid Guy is his target now! Stepping/Oozing into the room, he uses his Omni-Arm to attack Acid Guy.
"Put a cork in it, Bud," he says, forming a Giant Cork with his right arm and stretching/attacking Acid Guy while making a shield with his left arm to block the attack of Bigfoot in Armor. Devastating Attack? Crippling Attack? Don't really understand the math behind them but he will use whatever one hurts Acid Guy the most, putting whatever dice he has into attacking and screw using them for later defense. HE HATES ACID!!!!!!!

OOC: wow well I am not complaining bad dice rolls, Nah I nothing about such things
Steeplejack didn't need to be told twice, he hoped that mutton chops would wait like a decent alien to be wrapped in a bow after he had helped his friend out. The last thing he wanted to was the whole tower block in a panic because...well aliens!
Leaping in the fastest way he knew how bouncing off walls down the stairwell he followed the sound of voices, he honed in on where his partner was engaged or engaging the enemy. He wondered what other back up they had. These 'people' were not messing that much was for sure.
OOC: Not going to be much point in being subtle, but since they might not know Haunt has an ally, Sj will use his danger sense to come in and use 'devastating attack' to put the hurt on the closest beastie behind the door. He will split the die for attack and effect.

Steeplejack looked on somewhat amazed at the scene before him, but as he adjusted he could see Haunt had a game in play and held back momentarily to let his game play out.
OOC: Go for it Dave...

Re: THE NEW VANGUARD! HAUNT Issue #8
ooc: Is there like a double teaming or team up bonus when attacking? Or is it a skill you have to get in order to do so. Been wondering about that.
"Your turn," the Haunt growls. [same attack same way.]

Re: THE NEW VANGUARD! HAUNT Issue #8
OOC With experienced team members who train together (x-men danger room style) you can get a team attack bonus. Over time I would expect the two heroes to start to fight better together against a single opponent (one high, one low, or flank etc).
Haunt delivered another set of powerful blows to his alien opponent!

Haunt Misses!
Moving far better than something of its size should be able to, the Muton ducks, whirls, rolls and weaves even as Haunt smashes chunks of masonry away from the walls!
Steeplejack sees the alien level its blaster rifle and steps in to deliver multiple blows to the Alien to finish it off!

With a spinning kick Steeplejack sends the Muton flying through a wall! The place is a proper mess now!
The place has been turned upside down and its a total mess. They've clearly been looking for the TIME STONE that Cortez had...
