OOC: 'and greater numbers' just like tusken raiders. Thats what this party needs a jedi.
Loving the search light idea Paul and the fact he had to use his own armour too lol.
On a more serious note steve better suit up again or he'll catch a cold. Don't suppose before we press on he could have a quick look for any metal objects nearby?
So are we off on a dungeon raid now?

Re: The NEW Vanguard Issue 4 - Falling into the Abyss...
OOC Funny you mention Dungeon Raid Ross, I fancied running a fantasy RPG (as well as this one) when time permits. I'd have to step up my posting rate for something like that though as combat tends to play a much bigger part in fantasy games.
With Ghost Knight and Stormbreaker (NPC Mode) in front, Lionheart and his array of superhuman senses just behind, the group set off to descend into the bowels of the ruins.
SOLARL, the sentient light construct who'd piloted the team in Wandafars/Justin St Johns experimental stealth plane looked somewhat reluctant when offering, but gestured towards the parked up plane.
"Use whatever you require. I shall stay here and make preparations for the vehicle to be removed. Enough data has been gathered for Wandafar to make changes and improvements, though he will be less pleased to see it has been cannibalised for parts."
"Wandafar will be?" muttered Ghost Knight. In his secret identity as Justin St Johns he bankrolled Wandafar and a number of British superheroes. No one said meting out justice was cheap...
Centurion smiled, and quickly summoned both the metal he needed and moulded it, mid air, into the devices and structures he required. Such was the amazing versatility of his power and control he exhibited, it was scarcely believable to see mangled and borrowed parts from the stealth jet form up into a suit of armour!
OOC Strength gauntlets Str: 11, Body 12, Skin Armour 11, Body 12, Boot Jets Flight 11, Body 12, Sealed Systems 11, Body 12 (life support systems)
Suitably attired, Centurion clanks forward to walk alongside Haunt who pulses mist out in a trail behind him.
==========
Minutes later Ghost Knight calls a halt
"Been following the trail of magic. It gets powerful, and nasty." he said through the metal helm.
The group were stood in a dank tunnel several floors down from the surface, though it led to a dead end where the ceiling had caved in. Centurion provided the lights from his suit though in truth most of the team had some means of vision. Frostbites' chestplate cast an eerie blue glow over wherever he looked, though his computer was mostly silent. It was collecting and collating information wirelessly, a process that would take time but reap dividends in that it would better acclimatise the hero to this new time and place he found himself in.
"If anyone has an aversion to magic, best call out now." said Ghost Knight.
Without anyone professing a particular weakness to the mystical forces they faced, Ghost Knight shrugged. "You want to do the honours?"
Stormbreaker shrugged and looked forward, to where the ceiling appeared to have collapsed in a mass of tumbled stone and earth. He slashed at it with the sword, scything through rock as if it were water, and it parted as such. When the dust cleared the corridor continued, sloping downwards, to widen into natural caverns, and an eerie purple glow that cast upon the walls.
Moving through the hole in the rubble, the group moved to the entrance to the cave.
The cavern was wide, with stalactites (from the ceiling) near meeting stalagmites (from the ground) ignored when the heroes looked upon what appeared to be a 20 foot high and ten foot across 'gateway' made of pulsing purple energy, lightning crackling around it!
Even as the heroes watched the purple energy stretched and warped as if some human like creature were pushing from the other side, stretching the magical fabric and trying to break through! Mistlike beings - much like the heroes had fought up top, became apparent when closer to the light of the gate. They were trying to grab the emerging spirit, trying to help pull it through!
They appeared to be engrossed, or cared little for the presence of the heroes so as to ignore them. For now.
Near the gate, a couple of feet away, something gleamed on the floor. It was a shard of metal about the size of a coin and looked sharp, like a spear head, or it may have broken off something. From where the heroes stood it was around 40-50 feet away.
OOC The gate is the way these beasties come into our world, and it's open! There may be other spirit creatures in here - they can become invisible at will, only revealed when light is shone on them (it's still night) as you know. With that in mind there may be some nearby that you can't see so bear that in mind if you want to start a fight!

OOC: Doing a Fantasy RPG (D&D next is amazing the new rules are so much better than what has been before) is so much easier over g+ although you do need to have a good microphone or and video (don't you Ross?) and obviously a time when everyone can be ontogether. But I've been playtesting the new D&D rules for about 2 years by this means, and its worked well.
Anyway onto things here.
Frostbite took one look at the room, he motioned for the others to draw nearer. "Well friends it looks like we've got the drop on what is happening here, however that could change rapidly. We know these things have the ability to remain invisible unless we use light. But I want to know what we're up against and indeed what we might trip over if we just go for the straightforward approach of attacking. Can anyone deduce what that glowing artefact is, for instance. Is there a way to make sure we disrupt the gate, and weaken the 'ghosts' this side. Oh and last but by no means least, what hidden surprises, or traps lie in wait for us if we do attack? Can you magic users ascertain anymore?"
OOC: Basically us all piling in for a good slugfest is what this may come down to, however I'd much rather go in knowing if there is a way to turn things in our favour so as to use surprise most effectively then lets use it.

ooc: I doubt if detective skill will work here for this kind of thing but Haunt will try it anyways. When fight breaks out, he will go with Aura of Fear to try to force as many as possible of these things to flee through the hole in the fabric of reality.

OOC: Yeah you are right about the mic Dave. Funny the week I bought a new laptop with a mic we lost contact with the others. I would be really interested in starting again even if it means trying a different group.
Back to DS is it possible to turn the life supports of steves new suit to pick up signs of life or heat signatures and boost the range? Thats is if the others magic doesnt work

OOC: Well maybe with the new 5th edition coming out I might take up the mantle of DMing again, especially if its not possible to run a face to face game up here, if we can't get enough players. We'll have to see.

Re: The NEW Vanguard Issue 4 - Falling into the Abyss...
OOC Sorry for being rubbish all week. Kids off school means kids all day, then go to work most of the night and repeat Unfortunately I am the 'entertainment department' around here for my kids (4 and 10 yr old) which means the 6 weeks holiday are one... long... slog. Nnngh.
Ghost Knight muttered "Looks like metal."
Lionheart took a look with his own super senses (OOC Telescopic vision for a closer look). "Triangular. A spear head or perhaps, a part of something else?"
OOC Detective for Haunt - Clue Analysis. 2d10 → [9,2] = (11) Success.
"Part of something else. Something that has been broken or shattered. A weapon? Sword?" muttered Haunt.
Stormbreaker (OOC NPC mode) called out "Captain Claymore! He was here! The fragment... part of his sword? What can that mean?"
Ghost Knight muttered "Nothing good. Claymore can look after himself. That sword is an artifact, albeit one tied to the land of Scotland, but it should be nigh unbreakable." he looked at his own mace, and then at the gate. "I have a theory. Not one I'm relishing testing, but I think the gate can be closed. If I were to strike it with my enchanted mace, it might seal it."
Stormbreaker looked at the swirling magic gateway. "That's what Claymore tried. It broke his sword!" he hissed. "Without the sword, his powers...?"
Haunt turned his Aura of Fear on the spirit creatures in the cave. Those he could see, and those he couldn't...
OOC 2d10 → [2,1] = (3) Oh. Ouch. That's a fail...
Suddenly Ghost Knight and Stormbreaker looked up. "Uh, you got their attention, but not much else" said Ghost Knight.
OOC Initiative. Heroes 6, Bad guys 8. However all of you are faster than these things even with the lower roll. Declare actions. Usual, Dice action (i.e. attack), move action, auto action (like using a non attack power) You can see half a dozen Spirit creatures right now. It's the ones that you can't see that you should watch out for.
With regards posting rate - I am at work tonight (till 3am in the morning) then off tomorrow, so expect update on Sunday. Mon - Friday next week at work 11hrs per day but should be able to post a few times on a night. Saturday off, Sunday back at work, last day for current company.
Then I have a few days before going to Spain on 7th August. I will post from my tablet there once I figured out what internet won't cost me a fortune over there. Need something to do on an evening!

"Looks like we got their attention, whether we meant to or not." Frostbite said, before raising his arms to freeze as many could still be got before they scattered and attacked.
OOC: Looking to do area wide attack at everything forward of my position. No HP, they got spent a long time ago, so its down to dice - oh dear.
As Frostbite did his things, Lionheart made ready to try and disrupt the chain of events that surrounded the gate. If the artifact had become a focus, then lets take away the focus. And pausing only long enough to follow the stream of super cold ice that speed forth from Frostbite's raised arms, Lionheart shot in aiming to grab the weapon tip.
OOC: Am I right to assume its ok to use Telekinesis to move the tip as I get close, rather than touch with my hand? If so that is where I am wanting to go, pumping points into dex, force field and speed, or as is appropriate.
Sorry to hear about how things are working out home wise, its not a problem for me to wait...;-)

"Well, let's try this again," the Haunt mutters from his fog cloud, not being sure if the aura failed because it was actually scientifically based or because he didn't activate it properly.
actions: Aura of Fear again. Defense, going to use stretching to help absorb any attacks.

Re: The NEW Vanguard Issue 4 - Falling into the Abyss...
OOC Frostbite attacks with a multi attack against the half dozen targets he can see... 2d10 → [1,9] = (10) Eeesh. Missed, though not by a lot.
Frostbite blasted white frost in a cone ahead of him, trying to strike at the wailing spirits that he could see, and perhaps some that he couldn't...
His shot was wide of the mark, but left the cave coated with an instant 'winter wonderland' effect.
"Santa's Grotto" muttered Ghost Knight. "Stormbreaker, let's have at that gate!" he hollered, and raced towards the gate, whirling the Mace above his head.
"Wait, shouldn't we...?" called out Stormbreaker, before he sped off behind Ghost Knight, sword at the ready.
Lionheart moved in the blink of an eye towards the shard of metal near the shimmering metal shard near the gate. Using his telekinesis he hefted the shard using the power of his mind...
And felt a 'pull' towards the gate. It was as if the gate was trying to draw the shard in! The pull started getting stronger... and stronger...
Lionheart skidded a couple of steps towards the swirling magic gate... "What the?" he spluttered.
Centurion blasted at a spirit flying past, narrowly missing with an energy beam from his gauntlets!
OOC 2d10 → [5,4] = (9) Miss
Ghost Knight and Stormbreaker got to the gate. "Hit it with all we have! It's magic in nature, we can disrupt it and maybe disrupt it!"
Ghost Knight swung against the gate...
THOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!
The cave shuddered, the gate rippled, and Ghost Knight staggered. "What in the..?
Stormbreaker put his all into the swing...
CRASSSSSHHHHHHH!!!!!
Visible blinding white jagged cracked lines appeared in the swirling energy gate!
"Yes! That's... that's it!" shouted Ghost Knight, over an increasingly loud howling sound, like a storm building rapidly. Stormbreaker looked about, then at his sword. "Hold on! What... Look!" he pointed at his sword. "I don't..."
Then he started to slide towards the swirling magic gate...
Ghost Knight reached a hand over to him, only to have spirit creatures fly between them and Ghost Knight stagger back in surprise! "Grab my... mace? It's cracked! What in the...!?!?"
Haunt fired out his Aura again...
OOC 2d10 → [1,1] = (2) Ohhhhhhhh. These dice aren't me rolling, boss - blame invisible castle!
And nothing happened... again! "Is this thing on?" muttered Haunt as he adjusted his cowl and cape!
The rumbling continued...
Lionheart was being dragged slowly towards the gate... the wind was howling louder, making it hard to be heard even whilst shouting! Ghost Knight skidded towards the gate, voice lost so close to the maelstrom! Stormbreaker started to fly, but seemed to find it harder to resist the pull, crashing to the ground and sinking fingers into rock to slow the dragging!
The spirits seemed to be concentrating on Lionheart, Stormbreaker and Ghost Knight, swirling around them without actually touching them, creating more wind turbulence and noise!
OOC Something nasty is about to happen! You're up gents!

O Oh, doesn't look good. Frostbite once again raised his arms as he fired, this time across the entrance of the gate, trying to ensure that those being sucked toward it had a chance not to be. He also sought to create lots of points around the gate that they heroes could latch onto, as the gate fought hungrily for control.
Meanwhile Lionheart actively started to resist the pull of the gate, using his Telekinesis to push against the solid walls behind him whilst running forward trying to get a purchase on the floor to overcome the drag effect of the gate.

The Haunt, not sure why only certain folks were being pulled to the gate decided to try to save them. He moved quickly towards the gate, stretching as he went, then wrapped himself around the gate to keep the others from being sucked in. Leaving his fog back where he was and letting it dissipate slowly.

Re: The NEW Vanguard Issue 4 - Falling into the Abyss...
OOC: Is the gate made from something from this realm e.g. metal the can be controlled or even causes steve to be repealed like 'like' poles of a magnet? Doubt I could force the gate closed as I'm guessing its more or a portal.
If not centurion will morph a anchor like arm then let himself be dragged into the gates maw (like a true hero taking one for the team) dig the achor arm in the rocky ground and then use whatever HP I have left to quickly shape his remaining suit into a solid shield wall of thick sheet metal to stop the others from being pulled in.
Hope that makes sense.

Re: The NEW Vanguard Issue 4 - Falling into the Abyss...
OOC Usual, up to eyeballs with kids, sorting out holiday preperations etc. Am done with work at current place though. After 12 1/2 years it feels more of a relief than anything else that I'm making a new start. Close second is nerves, but that's normal.
On with the show.
The 'gate' is a swirling 2 dimensional (height and width, no depth) oblong composed of swirling energy...
Frostbite fired ice from his hands, piling it up and creating obstacles for the heroes to grab onto.
Centurion conjured an anchor which dug deep into the ground, and formed a steel wall over the entrance of the door, but not before Haunt had stretched over and created a barrier with his own body!
Strangely enough, the winds, though powerful, affected Ghost Knight, Lionheart and Stormbreaker more than the others! They fought against the pull and clung to the obstacles the team placed to help them.
The ice, steel hard, shattered under the desperate grasp of Ghost Knight! "What in the...?" He looked at Haunt and the others, trying their best to slow the progress. "This is a magical force at work!" he bellowed "It breaks the laws of physics! Don't sacrifice yourselves for us!"
Stormbreaker, fighting against the pull towards the gate, slammed up against the steel wall. The wind seemed to drag him towards the gate despite the efforts of the others!
Haunt looked at the three being dragged towards the gate he now blocked with his body. Stormbreaker and Ghost Knight, very powerful in their own right, magical might desirable for whatever foul malevolence was behind all this. But why Lionheart? He wasn't a magical powerhouse like the others... but he WAS the most powerful of those gathered here.
The ice and the steel crumpled as the heroes were dragged towards the gate. Lionheart used his telekinesis to 'grab' the stone and 'push' against the pull. Even so, it felt like he was battling the fiercest storm in the world, and he felt rock crumble under his telekinesis!
Frostbite kept piling the ice on, Centurion held the steel wall together as fast as it was dragged towards the gate, then Haunt felt his body sucked towards the gate! All of a sudden he was thrown forwards into a heap, as were the others!
The wind had gone!
The spirits vanished from sight, and the gate flashed bright white!
"IF YOU WILL NOT COME TO ME... I... WILL COME TO YOU!" bellowed a voice!
A terrifically powerful blast of force shot outwards from the gate, staggering even the superhumans and clearly more than a mortal human could live through. Some kept their feet, others quickly regained theirs and turned towards the gate. Something had come through.
"BEHOLD! MY BROTHER SAYS TO PLAN, TO WAIT, TO CONTROL FROM BEHIND THE SCENES...PAH! I WILL CLAIM THE GLORY OF CONQUEST, AND THE FAVOUR OF MY FATHER!"
The red skinned demonic form rose from a crouch to stand a good twenty feet high, heavily muscled, and oozing magical power!
Stormbreaker groaned. "There's good news and bad... That's not Kerberaxus* which is the good news... The bad news it's one of his devil spawn sons, Mezafraxus!"
The Demon turned "YOU KNOW ME? HOW CAN THIS..." His eyes fell on the sword, and he hissed like a cat, thrusting his staff out to ward towards the hero! "YOU! YOU BEAR THE SWORD! FATHER! HEAR ME! YOU WILL BE INDEBTED TO ME WHEN I CLAIM THIS PRIZE!"
The winds started picking up again, signifying the appearance of the spirits again, which kept their distance from the demon lord and started towards the heroes!
OOC Am in Spain from Thursday for 1 week, but will be hunting out internet access if nothing else than to preserve my sanity after constant running round after the kids. No promises, but am aware my crappy posting rate is dragging things to a halt but can't be helped unfortunately
You have:
A random number of spirits on each of you (1-6) and one great big nasty Demon Sub Lord stood in front of the gate. The wind is blowing FROM the gate now, not towards it.

Big guy won't be affected but once more, the Haunt will try his Aura of Fear against all except his allies. Using Stretching defensively to absorb attacks.

Re: The NEW Vanguard Issue 4 - Falling into the Abyss...
Haunt acts, knowing (probably quite right) that his power will not affect a creature which feeds on feed and terror, such as that which faced him!
The other creatures though, these disembodied spirits, had already shown themselves to be vulnerable!
OOC 2d10 → [10,6] = (16) Success against the spirits, but the Demon shrugs it off...
"WHAT???" spluttered the 'Demon' as it found itself waving off and batting away the spirits as they rushed, en masse, for the gate it was emerging from! "YOUR FEAR IS DELICIOUS, MINIONS, BUT YOU SERVE ME, NOT SOME MORTAL!"
It looked up, ignoring the fact that the spirits were trying their best to fly against the howling gale that issued from the gate, and pointed a hand towards Haunt "YOU, MORTAL, HAVE POWER! YOU WASTE IT, FIGHTING AGAINST ME! JOIN ME, LIKE THE OTHER TWO WHO EVEN NOW PREPARE THE WAY FOR MY CONQUEST OF YOUR REALITY!"
OOC He's due to act after the heroes have acted, but Haunt is definitely his target. Haunts' Aura of Fear has proven extremely effective at clearing out the mooks so you only really have one threat now - the Demon himself. It's what, 6 on 1? What could possibly go wrong?

Moving quicker now that the wind wasn't dragging him into the portal, Lionheart shifted around the creature, aware that being 'magical' in nature, his attacks might fall short of doing the damage he'd come to expect. Still he felt sure that the creature, might effect him more than he'd care for and fighting from afar would be best. Grabbing some loose masonry, he launched it at the creature, timing his attack as the others launched there's.
Meanwhile, thankful that he had something more substantial to attack, Frostbite once again launched an attack against the creature before him.
OOC: So Lionheart will use his full strength to throw the large chunk of rock, whilst Frostbite will attack with his blasting frost ray as before, hoping that, together with the others, these attacks might yield some dividends in our favour.
Sorry not been around, wasn't always getting the notifications that things had been posted and periodic check backs meant I missed your message before going to Spain. Glad you're back and starting the new job - trust that works out well.

"What's your medical and dental programs like," the Haunt quips. "How about your retirement plan? Just might go evil if they are better than what I currently have."
Haunt is going defensive. Using stretching to add to his defense.
BTW, how many points do we have? Forgotten what I can use.

Re: The NEW Vanguard Issue 4 - Falling into the Abyss...
OOC I will double check the HP totals from last posts as I'm only showing 4HP on this computer. That's the trouble with posting from various machines (PC, Laptop, Tablet, even phone!) things tend to get spread about. D'oh.
Lionheart uses his incredible strength to grab a large stalagtite from the ground and whirled it about to toss at the Demon!
OOC That's his dice action - effectively attacking with the thrown rock. Dice roll 2d10 → [5,3] = (8) Not the best but Lionheart is very agile, which helps.
The Demon moves to the side but still gets a face full of rock! It seems more distracted and angry rather than hurt, but takes the time to laugh out loud "MORTALS! YOU HAVE PROVIDED FINE SPORT TO ME! YOUR BODIES WILL BE PUT TO GOOD USE!"
Frostbite ignores the creatures' posturing and levels his arms...
OOC Attack roll 2d10 → [5,2] = (7) Ewwww. Just hits.
The creature seemed more troubled by Frostbites' blast and it just avoided being struck by the blast. With a roar of rage the creature shakes from side to side. "YOU DELAY THE INEVITABLE!" it bellows.
Ghost Knight laughs "Delay the inevitable? The only sure thing is you sent back through that hole missing your teeth!"
He steps up and swings at the Demon...
OOC 2d10 → [8,7] = (15) BOOM!
The demon is faster than it looks, but fails to dance aside as the enchanted mace clatters across it's face! This time it has no quips to come back with, only a pained groan as it's ruined teeth mix with gore and ichor from its mouth. Like a wounded animal it turns and hisses, bearing the ruins of its mouth and catlike eyes.
OOC The Demon is wounded now. It knows it's in a fight. Centurion and Stormbringer to act. In the interests of moving things on I will update tomorrow (Friday) and aim for updates over the weekend as well.

Re: The NEW Vanguard Issue 4 - Falling into the Abyss...
All the while the heroes were dealing with the bulky demon Steve had his back to the beast.
(Fake Catholic chanting) "DEMON BEGON BACK TO THE HELLISH PLANES WHERE YOU ROAM. TASTE MY HOLY ARTIFACT....."
Centurian spun around on the spot and lifted the canon size rocket launcher and laughed his shoulders to a slow jog as the payload streaked to its target.

Re: The NEW Vanguard Issue 4 - Falling into the Abyss...
OOC Rocket Launched at Demon from Centurions' arm cannon... 2d10 → [7,7] = (14) BOOM double plus 2d10 → [2,7] = (9)
The Demon turned to Haunt "YOUR PRATTLING WILL AVAIL YOU NOTHING, FOOL. THIS 'DENTAL' YOU SPEAK OF SHALL BE YOUR DYING WISH!"
Haunt was about to reply when a loud THWOOOOSH! went off! Half a dozen tiny shells struck the Demon in the chest, went off like grenades, and spat the huge creature across the room to crash into the wall, powdering rock in a cloud of fragments! Centurion lifted his arm cannon and theatrically blew smoke away "Yippee Kai Yay..." he chuckled.
Even as the dust cleared Stormbreaker sped into the cloud and pulled the sword up and down, slashing with the enchanted blade into the darkness.
He was rewarded with a roar of pain, and howl of rage!
Ghost Knight turned to the rest of the team "Get between the creature and the gate! Don't let it escape and regroup!" The Knight sprinted to stand alongside Stormbreaker.
"YOU THINK... ME... DEFEATED? YOU... ARE... POWERFUL." growled the creature, pain evident in every word. Despite being composed of super dense flesh that could shrug off tank munitions the Demon looked battered, bloodied, bruised and stood on shaky legs. "BUT THIS? THIS IS NOT OVER..."
He cast his gaze over the group, then snarled...
OOC Roll 2d10 → [9,9] = (18) DOUBLE plus 2d10 → [6,4] = (10)
And vanished in a cloud of smoke!
The gateway flickered, shimmered, then started collapsing in on itself! With shrieks of fear the spirits swirled about and sped towards the vanishing gate! Their leader having departed, the spirits had clearly had enough!

OOC: Nice exit, shame the battle ended so abruptly.
Turning to Stormbreaker and Ghost Knight, a puzzled Frostbite remarked, "Well looks like things have been prematurely cut short, got any suggestions as to what we do now?"

Re: The NEW Vanguard Issue 4 - Falling into the Abyss...
Ghost Knight looked about, remaining silent for a moment. "Too Easy" he grumbled in the helmet, and added "I don't think..."
A rumbling started in the caverns... dust fell from the ceiling...
"We should stay."
The rumbling was increasing moment by moment! A loud CRACK! sounded! The tunnel crashed inwards with rocks and dust falling to fill the exit up! That left the cavern, and the stalactites were wobbling ominously! Only the light from Frostbites chest plate lit the way!
OOC Ceiling is about to fall in - the Demon may be powerful, but he's used to fighting mere mortals - not superhumans! So why bother fighting when he can collapse hundreds, maybe thousands of tons of rock on the group!
